The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

if one or two of the weak calls against Canada aren't made then one or both of the 5 on 3's against them don't happen

The second 5-on-3 (the really long one) was a result of two consecutive delay of game penalties for shooting the puck out of play from within the defensive zone. These are not judgement calls and are also automatic penalties.

I'd definitely agree that the pace of the game was fantastic, and I regarded it as the best women's game I'd seen because of the passion that both teams displayed. Well, I guess that's what playing for the gold medal against your neighbors will do, but I was consistently impressed with the effort that both teams put forth (even if the US women struggled mightily on the PP).

Thanks for the clarification on the second 5 on 3...I should have added that the two weak calls that I was referring to were tripping calls, as I remember, possibly one or both of those contributed to the first 5 on 3.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

There was also a bogus "diving" call against Canada's Hefford in front of the U.S. net (that cross check that kncked her down would have knocked anyone down) along with a number of missed offsides.

All in all a great game though...just not for the officials.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Considering the pace and the intensity of the game, I thought the refs did an admirable job. They let a lot of the physical (but clean) hard nosed play go. It could have been a constant parade to the box if this game had been called by the book. IMHO, Compared to the final in 2002, this was a well called game.

There was only one Ref for the women's games and the Men had two. I was at the US vs Sweden women's game and there were non calls and bad calls IMO because they were missing the second set of eyes. It's strange that a DIII women's game will have two ref's but not the biggest game of the World.

All in all I thought the officials did a good job and the Olympics were unforgettable!:D

As these games close, I'd like to thank folks for some fantastic and memorable word choices used these last two weeks. Off the top of my head, there was Brouhaha, Kerfuffle, and last but not least Canuckistan!

:D

However, I'll continue to hope and dream that the word rout will be lacking four years from now.

Congrats, Team Canada........times 2!

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

........,and last but not least Canuckistan!

I'm please to inform you that SOCHI is in the southern tip of Russia, not far from places like Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. :D :D :D

SOCHI is also right on the border with Georgia, the former Soviet Republic that was home to the sledder who tragically lost his life just before the opening ceremonies.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Just finished watching the closing ceremonies and....for once the Maple Leafs were hot!:D

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I'm wondering if they can send one of those giant inflatable beavers from the closing ceremonies to Bemidji now that the games are over. :D

Flipping back and forth between CTV and NBC, noticed that the NBC was only covering parts, and at times 30 minutes late. There was a lot of Canadian specific content (inluding a lengthy speech by the VANOC CEO) that NBC seemed to completely skip.

So the American audience didn't get to see our Maple Leafs...that's a shame!:D

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That would be good!

I was a little disappointed that there were no giant Canada Geese. We could send one of those to Wawa!

They had Geese Images flying around the stadium at one point.
This time of the year most of them are down south.
Up here they call that the "Snow Bird" effect. :D

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

They already have one:

Oh- I must have forgot my sarcasm tags on my last post. ;)

No, I saw the VANOC guy. Not sure that we saw it in its entirety, but he talked awhile

EDIT: NBC replayed their broadcast of the closing ceremony after the local news and so I paid more attention to the speech. NBC did a replay of Shaun White and then joined the speech somewhere along the way. I just read this summary on SI.com, which was NOT part of the NBC coverage:
"Alexandre," VANOC Chief John Furlong, said during his speech to moguls skier Alexandre Bilodeau, "your first gold medal gave us all permission to feel like and behave like champions. Our last one will be remembered for generations."

Furlong's delivery may have been stilted, but the response was not. The crowd of 60,600 rose to its feet, unscripted, and stopped his closing speech cold for a good minute, cheering the biggest win in Canadian hockey history. Such chesty flagwaving was seen across Vancouver and Canada throughout these games, but hit new levels in the aftermath of the hockey win -- horns beeping, men hugging, a once-shy country openly reveling in its success.

"That quiet, humble national pride we were sometimes reluctant to acknowledge seemed to take to the streets as the most beautiful kind of patriotism broke out all across our country," Furlong said. "So many new and dazzling applications for the Maple Leaf."

So, you were right - the NBC coverage skipped this "Canadian specific content." Bummer. I get tired of their US specific coverage.

I killed myself laughing at every campy stereotypical Canadian icon used in the show, especially the birch bark canoes....felt like I was in a tacky tourist gift shop in Niagara Falls!:D
