The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Lamoureux twins provide another inspiring effort

"Nothing compares to this, playing in a tournament like this with so much on the line, it's definitely up there as No. 1 right now. I was jumping around a little bit. I was pretty excited." -- Monique Lamoureux

Few good stories on the US Team.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Is it just me, or does anyone else wish AJ would take a hot iron to her announcing partner every time he says "shutout" or "held scoreless" in reference to the USA goalie's performance before the final buzzer? I mean, c'mon! What planet did he come from:(

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

We might be rivals on the ice from time to time but I believe Tom sums it up the best....

http://holykaw.alltop.com/tom-brokaw-explains-canada-to-americans-4

And the one thing he couldn't say on air...

We share broadcast spectrum across the border, so you can watch the other country's network coverage of the games if you are lucky enough to live in a border city.

I'm sure that would have gotten him in trouble with the NBC brass.

Gosh, I miss the days when I could watch Hockey Night in Canada... :(

Announcers revel in spewing out stats like "their penalty kill is hot, not allowing a goal in the last 37 penalties." Of course, no sooner are the words said, then the puck ends up in the back of the net. They don't believe in superstitions, but I'd bet a good 1/3 of the time a pronouncement like that is made, the stat goes by the wayside.

I thought that Cammi Granato was covering the hockey for NBC.

She's the color commentator for pregame, postgame, and intermissions, while A.J. is doing color for the actual game broadcasts.

Must be A.J. then who remarked a couple of times that Raty is a "big" goaltender? All 5 foot 4 of her? I don't think she was referring to how she "plays big" or "comes up big".

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on that one, and assume she meant it like, "what challenges does Finland present? well, they have the big goalie, though not the big line." She did say that it was odd that Monique was scoring goals and Jocelyne was getting assists -- after last season, that was what I would expect more often than not.

There were articles and letters to the editor in the paper here the other day focusing on opinions from Americans in border cities such as Buffalo and Detroit about Olympic coverage.

They were lamenting the fact that CBC no longer had the Olympic broadcast rights this time around. Apparently, they are not able to get CTV via cable or satellite unlike CBC, and few still have "bunny ears" available. That meant that this time around they have been forced to watch NBC instead, which they felt was drastically inferior in terms of both quality of coverage and broadcast hours.

While I've always preferred the Canadian coverage to NBC, as a Canadian I'm obviously biased. I never realized until reading all the kerfuffle caused that there were so many Americans who felt the same.

The CBC always did a great job, but I really like the fact that this time around with CTV running things, you can watch different Olympic events on 4 different channels.
Our remote is taking a beating.:D

I confess to being an Olympic junkie. Good thing they are only on for 2 weeks...18 hours a day in front of the TV would be tough to sustain on an ongoing basis.

Actually she was focusing in just on Raty, on what a big physical presence she was in net. No biggie, I just found it a little odd.

Trillium, our remote is taking a beating, too! :D We're switching between NBC, MSNBC, USA, and CNBC. Last night we finally got to see the Canadian Women's team (their games have been during the day while we're at work). We had been wanting to see Tessa Bonhomme play. Us Ohio State fans are fiercely loyal to the kids who have worn the scarlet & gray. We also have a player on Team USA (Lisa Chesson), a couple of girls on Finland's team (Emma and Minttu ... don't want to butcher their last names), and Ryan Kesler for the Team USA men.

At this point, the possibility still exists that they could all medal.

Now that would be something, wouldn't it? Regardless of who gets which medals, I'm just getting a kick out of all the Ohio State kids playing for these hockey teams. With me, hockey is #1 in the Winter Olympics and everything else is a distant second.

I had the pleasure of meeting Emma Laaksonen back in her OSU days. She is a great player and an all around class act. I wish her and the Finns much success against Sweden.

Actually for me it's the exact opposite. I haven't watched more than a few minutes of any of the hockey games ...maybe because we see so many games a week already between our kids teams and their competitors, other coaching commitments, NHL games etc and it is now getting to the end of a long season.

What I really love about the Olympics is seeing sports and athletes I never normally am able to watch because they get far less coverage (or I don't have time to see).

I only wish I could get to see so much hockey... I've been just enjoying the games - even the undercard games...

Coverage is already on when I get up in the morning through until 2 AM every night. Can you say sleep deprived?

Heard the funniest thing on the broadcast today. One of the announcers said that her 7 year old daughter asked her "Mommy, why do they give all the medallists broccoli too?" :D

Well, isn't it obvious-- you need to eat a LOT of broccoli to get stronger, faster, higher. You must eat well to perform at your best. Makes more sense than flowers doesn't it?
