The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Raty aside, I think the Fins will defeate Sweden easily.....based on how Sweden played against the US and Canada, I don't see much game there.

Was thinking the same thing. Finns look much better as a team, specially on D, than the Swedes.

However, similar to the US-Canuck rivalry, when those two get together, other games often mean little. That rivalry is as intense as it gets.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Seriously, heard the announcers talking about it being Finland's goal to centralize before the 2014 games, spefically setting their goal to be truly competitive with the US and Canada. Building off this performance tonight, I can see this as a distinct possibility.

In my wildest dreams, I cannot imagine Russia wanting to give their home team every possible chance to be competitive in EVERY sport, including women's ice hockey.

There is hope to have at least 4 competitive teams four years from now. This is good news.

4-0 Canucks. Second of the night for Irwin. Ivy Leagers Johnston and Vaillancourt the assists.

Getting ready for the much anticipated tilt on Thursday. :)

It's official. Canada vs US for the Gold on Thursday. Ouellette scored a shorthander late to make it 5-0.

I'll give ya curling......around here we do curling with 12 oz. cans. :D

Not sure I'd be so quick to claim a hockey sweep just yet! Canada men might be too rattled to even earn a medal, let alone gold!

As for the women's gold, I'll take US by 2.

Especially if Ovechkin is playing and hitting like he has been. I think if the Russians don't beat the now rattled Canadian men, they will take a toll on them.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

If Raty plays like this for Minnesota when she returns...... no, stop, get those thoughts out of your mind, Ice.... YIKES!
Why not? ;) It's how she has played every game in net for Minnesota. On a few occasions she's had to.

Don't worry. My hubby's gonna pick it up soon. ;)

Back to women's, I wonder how goalies from both teams will adjust to being significantly more challenged. I hope it's a great game. :)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I think the way Erlander explained it earlier was that while Sweden has improved since the last Olympics, the Canadians and Americans have improved, too. So no matter how much better Sweden might be today than in 2006, they're still way behind the USA and Canada. And the team was centralized...they've been playing together for months. You'd think things would've clicked, so I don't know what it is.

I read that too and while it seems to make sense it also seems to ignore the obvious fact that whatever they have been doing to improve has not been enough to stay competitive. They have to slam it into high gear but then money is also a big part of it. Their being centralized was what I meant earlier when I looked forward to their playing Finland (assuming Canada was going to beat Finland)...with Finland only uniting a couple of weeks ago...and look at their effort vs. Canada!! Full marks to the Finns. If they centralize watch out... the field could be what most here are wanting...more competetive.

I also think that intense team building/bonding is critical as described in this link that explains what Team Canada did that I posted previously but will provide here again for those who may have missed it. It is the invisible ingredient to be added to talent and physical ability whose positive effect is impossible to measure. Anyone know of a similar article describing the process that Team USA may have gone through...assuming that they did?

Canucks have dug out of a hole before....72 series...87 Can Cup...2002 Salt Lake....Yes it is a much tougher road, but IMHO if they get by the Russians, watch out....We are already changing our goaler to the Vancouver Home Town Favorite.....

As you can imagine, up here, the Mens Hockey pushes aside pretty much all other sports news. Good news is that with it being on CTV, we don't have to listen to Grapes. :)

Now back to Womens Hockey...While I do fear the speed of the Yanks, and hope that the Canuck D will keep it safe with the outlet passes...Calling for a Thriller in OT....MPP will bag the winner in the shootout. :)

I'd try searching for Caitlin Cahow's blog for USA Today... I think she detailed some of their training practices.

Probably the best move by Team Canada to give Brodeur a seat. His aggressive tendency cost them that game. Don't know if it will last though. Babcock will probably throw him back in against the Russians. Perhaps a game to think about it might be about enough.

As for the women, I too predict it will be a one goal game. And it will be determined by which goalie holds up late in the game.

I'm not picking the winner though!

You have to like the way the Finns keep battling and never give up, even when the outcome is no longer in doubt. And if what we've seen so far holds, they should also have the edge in goaltending. If Sweden has any advantage, it may be up front. Overall I like Finland, say 3-1.

Funny I was thinking of the 72' series today remembering how the Canadian fans and press were ripping them as they were today, for not doing better against the Russian Bear. Ironicly, it was in Vancouver, the last game prior to going to finish the series in Moscow, down two games to one and a tie in an 8 game series when Phil Esposito came on National T.V. and pleaded with the people to give them a break..I think he said something like "You don't understand...these guys are good". Same can be said for each and every Olympic team on the men's side now. Our boy's will need to dig down deep again, as we have before.... to get er done.

I think our Women are too big, too strong and too determined to have anything go sideways on Thursday. Canada by 2 (EN) with Carla McLeod of Calgary, Alberta getting the game winner.;)

I'm calling Canada the winner and calling it an easy pick. I'll even say they take it by three or more.:D
