The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

No, unless Sweden follows it up with another disastrous showing. I think it is better for the US to play Sweden at their best. A competitive opponent is a luxury in this tournament. If the USA can't get up to play a good game against Sweden coming off three days rest with the memory of the 2006 semi still fresh, then they weren't of championship caliber in any case.

I agree but I've had the misfortune of playing an opponent who just got squashed in a prior game and if the US doesn't come out with guns blazing, the Swedes will take it to them much like 2006. And I also agree that the memory of 2006 should serve the US very well in this game. I'm really looking forward to the game.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

A few quick thoughts:

-- For what's it worth, I recall Canada had the much closer game in the 2002 semifinals, trailing Finland in the 3rd, before coming back to win 8-3 or some such. And of course Canada went on to win the gold medal.

-- I agree the article was one of the better I've read on the subject. It raised all the differences between w. hockey and softball that I've raised before, and why w. hockey doesn't have the same problems. However, I'm still annoyed by the headline, still annoyed it spins w. hockey as being a "major risk" to be cut from the Olympics. I still don't see any evidence of that. The fact there are blowouts is hardly a sufficient condition for "major risk."

Also, the US wasn't nearly as dominant in softball as the media makes out -- the US lost THREE TIMES in the Sydney games before winning 3 straight playoff games to take the gold, but everyone who writes about softball cherry-picks the statistics.

Here is a feed from the Vancouver games.

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/olympics/

If it works over the pond it will give you live feeds from the games (without commentary as taken by the TV companies) and highlights.

It also give the live coverage from the major european broadcasters.

Hope it works for you.

For those of you who have to work tomorrow, like me :( , be sure to set your DVR's for 3:00 pm Eastern/2:00 pm Central. Broadcast will (appropriately) be on USA-HD if you get it.

Time to pull Martin. She doesn't have it today. Is the Sweden coach asleep at the switch here?

5-1 at the second break. Not sure if changing the goaler would help the Tre-Kronor much in this game.

I just saw her make two fantastic saves 3 minutes into the third.

True but it's too little, too late. She didn't play well early on and it cost Sweden dearly. I would have made a move to at least shake the team up and get it going. This is after all the game that decides who plays for the gold.

8-1 now. Not Martin's fault as the US is swarming in front of her.

I don't know how you say "defense" in Swedish, but somebody needs to teach Peter Erlander that word.
