The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

That is great!!!! I thought China did pretty good in their game against Finland considering they only have 67 girls playing hockey in the whole country (according to the article)

Yay, make that 2-0 Russia.....3:00 left in the second period.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Spoke to soon, 2-1 Russia, 2:00 left in the second period. Sounds like a great crowd environment too.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

No matter how this ends, congrats to Shi Yao and China for a great showing tonight! I'm hoping they can cash in on this power play at the 3 minute mark.

This is every bit as good as the earlier tilt between the Shockers and the Headhunters! Good stuff! :)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

softball lost out for the same reason baseball did: The Europeans who basically control the IOC don't want to build venues for sports they don't play.

Women's hockey isn't going anywhere so long as there's also a men's hockey tournament in the Winter Olympics: gender parity is a powerful force.

As was noted, there are a considerable number of countries fielding teams. Including both North and South Korea.

And then there is this from the previously linked article:

"But Fasel and those who govern the game internationally have practical reasons to keep women's hockey.

Eliminating the sport would eliminate 168 athletes from the games instead of the few dozen who would be in women's ski jumping, for example. Plus, hockey games sell loads of tickets, no matter where the Olympics are held. So regardless of the scores, the women's game makes money."

They mentioned China starting a U-18 team for International play .. so that could be of some benefit if they can land a good western hockey mind to go live in China and help develop their programs to be competitive with at least the European teams before they try and think about catching the US or Canada.

If they got some of their 18-20 yr olds here in the NCAA that could be a big benefit as well.

Россия победит! Россия победит! Россия победит!

2-1 Russia final

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Isn't that in the future tense?

I think past tense would be...

Россия победила

I wanted to ask my daughter but the time difference made that impossible so I had to rely on Google Translate. Hopefully, her Russian friends will excuse the possible mistake. I am very happy for them!

In other news, here is a brief article about the Islanders and their upcoming plans:

Currently hockey is very regionalized to the northeastern corner (Manchuria) near the Russian border. Vancouver has a huge Chinese community; largest in North America. The exposure that they are receiving will help the recruitment of the players. They already have rinks established for figure skating so there is little infrastructure that needs to be invested in. Now they just need coaches and teachers.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Canada's gonna eat up all those rebounds the USA was giving away today. Lots of improvements to make before the big game.

Agreed. This was the most misleading shutout I've seen in a long time. If the US takes that many penalties against Canada, forget it. Game will be over in the second period. Nothing against Finland; they played hard the whole game and got their chances. But we can't play this way against Canada.

If they're going to compete well against Canada the U.S. will also need to cut down on the many giveaways (unforced turnovers) they surrendered last night. Canada's speed and relentless pressure will cause plenty of the forced variety, so maintaining puck possession, whenever possible, will be critical. Yesterday there were far too many poor clearing attempts, blind passes and failed attempts at making the highlight reel that led to a Finnish player getting the puck. The game against Sweden will give them a chance to work on these things.

The problems I've seen aren't the kind of things that I think get fixed in one game. Some of the breakdowns I saw at Ridder are still there. The blue line is particularly error prone. Bellamy and Chesson, who in theory should be the most green, seem to make the fewest mistakes. Up front, there still seems to be a tendency to rely on individual effort at times, as compared to Canada, where the puck is moved like it's a pinball. I hope they have a couple super efforts stored up for next week, because I don't think that the current level gets it done.

Finland held Team USA to only one goal in both the 2nd and 3rd periods, and Vetter made some great saves. Did not see Team USA work well as a "team" there was alot of individual play, especially shots right at the goalie instead of playmaking attempts, even the power play struggled. Team USA made Finland look alot better than Sweden, it will be interesting to see how they do v. TC.

In fairness, I think Sweden did more to make Finland look better than Sweden.

I think that's where Canada has the biggest edge; their D are less prone to making mistakes and they are really good passers hitting breaking forwards coming out of their zone. Very pretty to watch, except of course when they're playing the U.S.

I fully agree with you Arm..........

Well, yes and no. Kelli Stack I thought was too individualistic but I really liked the Potter line. Team USA had some great chances to add to its lead; give the Finnish goalie credit for playing well. And I did think that the US cycled the puck for the most part in the first period. Remember, they got up 4-0 and have been winning big so a bit of a letdown was not a surprise. And Finland did respond helped by the power plays.

Still I agree with what has been said about the D and the giveaways. Canada will most surely make us pay if we play that way against them.

Where I think they need improvement aside from their D is in the faceoff circle. I don't have the numbers but it seemed to me that we lost almost as many faceoffs as we won. Or perhaps lost more than we won. Don't know the totals but we can't let that happen against Canada especially in our own zone.

Anyone concerned that we'll be playing Sweden right after their disastrous showing against Canada?

No, unless Sweden follows it up with another disastrous showing. I think it is better for the US to play Sweden at their best. A competitive opponent is a luxury in this tournament. If the USA can't get up to play a good game against Sweden coming off three days rest with the memory of the 2006 semi still fresh, then they weren't of championship caliber in any case.
