The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I think tomorrow won't be traditional sprinters. I think more classics guys...Cunego, Wegmann, Garzelli, Tommy Voeckler, Pipo Pozzato, maybe a Scarponi type. If he hadn't attacked today I'd say Pineau...I bet Ignatiev goes on the attack since he hasn't yet. Of the real GC guys, I think only Vino would attack. DiLuca certainly would...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Matthew Lloyd with a nice solo attack to take the win today.
Hondo celebrated that 3rd place sprint like he'd won the stage. Humorous. :)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Second day in a row the break stays away, Good for Matty LLoyd :D

Well Sunday starts the Tour of California so two stages to watch each day for a week.

I do like it when the fight out all the placings. Last year Cav and Thor sprinting one of the mountain stages out for 140th place was about as funny as it gets.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Wow, what a stage.
Nibali cracks and falls down the leaderboard.
Evans, Cunego, and Vino go 1-2-3.

Vino back in pink with Evans in 2nd.

Pozzato and Sastre both lost over 4min and fell way back...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Probably the best GT stage I've seen!

I'd seen talk that Basso and Sastre may struggle here due to poor bike handling, guess that was accurate...

Great rides all around...and Pinotti still hanging in there same with Miller.

Actually not sure Nibali cracked, I know he went down and seemed to be waiting to pull Basso which was really awful...He's only like 30 sec down on Evans now I think.

Ironically enough, it was Pozzato that said that yesterday in CN:

Pozzato predicts that the dirt roads could change the overall standings of the stage. He suggested that riders like Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Doimo) and Carlos Sastre (Cervelo TestTeam) could struggle.

"Whoever hasn't got much experience of riding on the dirt roads will be in for a shock," he predicted.

Funny enough, Pozzato finished over 4min behind Evans. :D

Yeah, it sounds like Basso, Nibali, and another Liquigas rider all went down even before the 1st section of dirt. It looked like Basso/Nibali were working together to try and bridge up, but that wasn't happening.

Tomorrow is the 1st summit finish! Let's see who has their climbing legs. I need Sastre to do something in the hills now that he's out of the GC picture. Same with Tondo.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Now that was quite a stage with Cadel on the attack no less. :D Am not liking the Unisport announcer love the end it looks like Cadel and Vino are the two candidates for victory. Nibali is 1:40 out Basso 1:50 out and with the way the race is set up with the mountain top finishes someone even further down could make a run for the jersey.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

cadel seems like he's changed his entire approach to racing, ever since he lost the Tour last year. he's no longer sitting back and following others, but been going out on the attack himself and forcing the issue.

Been having a lot of success doing so, also. I heard or read someone who said that after coming from mountain biking, after these years in the peloton, he's finally learned how to judge tactics, and read how races are unfolding, and has become better at knowing when and what to do.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

rufus, that is possible, but I think its something a bit simpler, I think the WC last year made him more confident and as a result more agressive. I'm still a bit surprised that Evans managed to beat Cunego in a "sprint."

Also, it snowed on the Terminillo last night...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Right, but he went on the attack in the WC last year as well. So it started before that.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Yes, obviously, but I chalk up that attack (at the WC) to anger over the Vuelta. He saw how it worked and with the team change, we now see a more aggressive Cadel.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Pretty uneventful stage today for a mountaintop finish. Will be interested to see the tactics this week from the stronger teams, Lampre and Liquigas really don't have a reason to work, especially with Pettacchi retiring. So I will be interested to see if they make Astana and BMC work on the front. Was really surprised to see Lampre on the front today, my only guess is they thought they could catch the break and Cunego could win the stage. BMC is a weak team made weaker with two guys retiring and Astana is stronger but Tiralongo crashing out really hurts them. I would think the other teams would make them work up front to hopefully tire them out for the last week but it will be interesting to see what they do.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

On another note, was doing some browsing today, and came across this. Me want.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Pretty uneventful first day at the Tour of California. With the exception of Boonen is their anybody to challenge Cav? JJ gave it the old college try today. At least Saxo bank attempted to break up the lead out train of Columbia other teams should try it as well.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Pippo?

Anway that ToC stage was painful...Tour of Quatar FTW!

Probert, I actually though Cav didn't look that great, he should be crushing a guy like Haedo. Hope Boonen and Chicchi can get up to challenge him.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Velogames was updated with the stats from Stage 6 & 7 (not today's stage).
Tondo helped me out with a 3rd place today, but Sastre hasn't done anything yet. Since he usually does better as the grand tours get along, hopefully he can shine in the final 3rd week, which is uber tough in this Giro.
