The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Doesn't seem to me like a Greipel's team should ever get to complain about positioning in sprints.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I missed the stage today but a few words about the crashes. My understanding, limited though it is, is that riding in Holland is hard because all the roads are designed with bike paths and the riders are riding on the main roads. This means there is a ton of road furniture. Plus today there was wind and what not. Still there are always crashes in the first week of Grand Tours, and LA's protest, I think, was specific to the city crit stage last year where there were cars parked in the street.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I really thought I was sitting pretty with Greipel the only sprinter in the main group figure I get the rosa and the stage win and then he just faded out. Greipel had 3 guys leading him out and finished 5th or 6th. The race has been shaken up but Wednesday it will probably get shaken up even more with the TTT. I am guessing Garmin will be the favorite but with Christian out no GC contender. Is the Giro limiting the time gains like the Tour? if not I am guessing Evans, Garzelli, Sastre and maybe Vino to lose time.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Quite the cash filled stage today hope tomorrow is better. My team isn't looking so hot so far.

From what I could see, some pretty narrow streets(even the highways), and a lot of really sharp turns, a ton of 90 degree+ curves, and you can see why they'd have a ton of crashes.

I read something about Greipel being under the weather a bit entering the Giro. Not sure if that's the case or what.

With Millar only being 1 sec out of the Maglia Rosa, I would guess that Garmin wants to win and get him in the jersey for a few days. Of course, Columbia has 3 guys in the top 7 GC as well, so they could really stack the GC if they won the TTT.

I haven't heard anything of them limiting the TTT time like in the Tour, so I think it is just normal time gains/losses.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I like how the Velogames guy keeps pushing the first update back further and further. :D

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Sky and Katusha really going well in the TTT today.
Evans and BMC hold the early lead, but both Sky/Katusha crush BMC's time.

As usual, Evans will have to make up time in a Grand Tour that is lost during a TTT...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Liquigas beats Sky's time!
Looks like Nibali could be pink tonight unless HTC or Astana pick it up...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Liquigas wins the TTT.
Nibali is in pink, Basso right behind him in 2nd on GC.

Evans and BMC lose 1:21...ouch.
Cervelo and Sastre with a surprisingly good time, only losing 38 sec.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Still no update. :D

Well, in all fairness it just says the update will take place on "Tuesday". It doesn't say which Tuesday. So maybe he is thinking Tuesday, June 15th for the update? ;) :D

Oh, and heck of a ride by Liquigas!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Watching Vino have a melt-down in the last K of the TTT was great. It also makes you wonder how he was able to wave his arms around and yell so much when his entire team was on the rivet...

Anway, I still hate the TTT but at least this one didn't appear to end the race. Frankly it was a good day for my 2 GC guys Evans and Sastre. Both have spotted Basso and Nibali 2 minutes BUT I think both, or at least Sastre should be able to get that back from Basso. The wildcard is Nibali.

I liked that as well. Humorous.

Yeah, Basso hasn't shown yet that his climbing legs have returned enough to be able to hang with Sastre/Evans when the mountain stages hit.
Nibali should be interesting to watch...

Velogames has been updated! Finally! ;)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Saw this and thought it made things easier to understand...Strade Bianche on Saturday and Terminillo on Sunday likely won't shake the GC too much but should tell us who won't win.

GC contenders after stage 4
1 Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 10:44:00
2 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 0:00:13
6 Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) Astana 0:00:33
27 Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team 0:01:59
32 Carlos Sastre Candil (Spa) Cervelo Test Team 0:02:13

41 Stefano Garzelli (Ita) Acqua & Sapone 0:02:49

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Interesting TTT no team really shined and it didn't seem as if anybody lost a whole lot of time although those that lost time the last 2 days and lost more today may be out of it. Since Nibali wasn't even on the squad I wonder how well he will do, the main reason I didn't pick him, but he may surprise me.

I think if they don't make Nibali tow Basso up the mountains he will podium. If they make him tow Basso, neither will.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Wow, the break stays away...Pineau with the win!

Thumbs up! Always cool to see them succeed, especially with how close that ended up being there at the end.
The three timed it right!

1 Jerome Pineau (Fra) Quick Step
2 Julien Fouchard (Fra) Cofidis
3 Yukiya Arashiro (Jpn) Bbox Bouygues Telecom
4 Tyler Farrar (USA) Garmin - Transitions
5 Gregory Henderson (NZl) Sky Professional Cycling Team
6 Alessandro Petacchi (Ita) Lampre-Farnese Vini
7 Graeme Brown (Aus) Rabobank
8 Andre Greipel (Ger) Team HTC - Columbia

Farrar won the field sprint for 4th.
Another good day for my fantasy team, getting 4th, 5th, and 8th. :)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I wonder if Voss dropped off because he was cooked or if he expected them to be caught and wanted to save the energy to defend his jersey tomorrow. Still awesome ride by the 3. I've always liked Pineau (and QST) so I'm glad they're having a good Giro with 2 stages already!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I bet he was cooked.
He finished DFL on the stage today, with a group of riders over 8 minutes back.

Will any sprinters be able to make it over the climbs toward the end of the stage with the leaders to contest for the win tomorrow?
