The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Nice little uphill kick at the end causes some fireworks with Evans and Vino sprinting it out a bit before the real sprinters come by them.

Goss takes the win over Pozzato and Farrar.
Goss has had quite a decent Giro so far, I wonder what is going on with Greipel? He wasn't near the front from what I could tell.

Sastre got caught out at the end of the stage and lost almost another 2min. He's not having a good Giro at all. Hopefully he can win a mountain stage in the 3rd week...

Good stage for my Velogames team getting 1st (Goss), 3rd (Farrar), and 8th (Henderson).

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Brian your "minor" domestiques are really working out for you! I know Greipel was ill before the Giro, I figure he's healthy now, nut as to his power outage, I have no idea...

Maybe, given Evans' attack, the HTC train got thrown into a bit of chaos...Greipel ended up like 19th or something. So he was there, just never really got into the sprint.

No doubt, I never would have expected riders like Goss and Henderson (and even Tondo) to get so many points at this stage already.
And on the flipside, for Sastre (2nd most credit cost on my team) to have a whopping 4 pts.

Velogames has been updated for stage 8&9.

Your like those breakaways with a 4 minute lead with 30K to go can you hold off the onrushing peloton. :D

Funny how even a boring sprint stage can be interesting in this years Giro best I've seen in years.

The breakaway got caught again today. ;)

Farrar takes another sprint today! It wasn't even close. Farrar's last leadout man, Julian Dean, produced such a big gap that he managed to get 3rd on the stage.

Greipel got a 7th place, and McEwen shows that the old guys can still do it. :)

1 Tyler Farrar (USA) Garmin - Transitions
2 Fabio Sabatini (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo
3 Julian Dean (NZl) Garmin - Transitions
4 Robert McEwen (Aus) Team Katusha
5 Robert Forster (Ger) Team Milram
6 Sebastien Hinault (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale
7 Andre Greipel (Ger) Team HTC - Columbia
8 Danilo Hondo (Ger) Lampre-Farnese Vini

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I thought for sure with the war of words between Cav and Greipel that Greipel would come out and win more stages in the Giro. That's why I stupidly picked him over Farrar. Ugh. :(

He seemed like a better pick for the money at the time. The four points I save taking Greipel over Farrar, allowed me to spend 20 on Sastre. :)

Oh well, the rest of my team is doing great.

That's what I thought as well, so I just picked both. ;)

Big day in the ToC today, with 3 big climbs, including Bonny Doon, which Levi attacked on last year to build his winning margin.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I picked Greipel for the same reason and Petacchi cause well he's Italian. Not working out well for me.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Your Sastre is my Simoni.

I expected at least a little something out of him in his final race of his career.
Maybe he's saving it all for one big mountain stage finish.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I would be shocked if both Sastre and Simoni aren't on the attack during the 3rd week.

The ToC appears to be a 3-horse race now with Zabriskie, Rogers, and Leipheimer breaking away from the pack and finishing together. All three are good TT'ers, so that should make for a tight finish for them.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I think you guys know I'm a huge Gibo fan, but I never expected anything from him in this Giro. I'm hoping that he'll get some freedom in the 3rd week to stage hunt, BUT Cunego has been talking like he thinks he can content for the Maglia.

Anyway, on to the main reason I logged in this AM, anyone watching/reading about today's stage?!? If you though the strade bianche was nuts how about this....56 riders off the front with a 17 minute advantage! Including Sastre, Pozzovivo, Porte, and Arroyo. It could be like the great escape in to I think Colmar in the tour a few years ago when Simon and Kivilev got like 30 minutes on the Peloton. This could see Sastre's comeback.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Holy !@#$.

From velonews, here are the best placed:

Porte (Saxo), who started the day 2:26 out of first
Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne), at 4:22
Kiserlovski (Liquigas), at 4:25
Agnoli (Liquigas), at 5:18
Tondo (Cervelo), at 6:34
Efimkin (Ag2r), at 7:56
Gerdemann (Milram), at 8:14
Sastre (Cervelo), at 9:59
Wiggins (SKY), at 10:54

Do any of these guys have the goods to stay ahead the rest of the way?

Cadel and Vino really don't have teams that can chase do they?

Arroyo, without the long TT at the last Giro, would have been top 5. Both Liquigas guys can climb and would be supported by the strongest team in the Giro. Tondo, I touted as a darkhorse at the Vuelta last year, so I believe that he does have the good. Efimkin likely can't win, but could contend, he's a opportunistic climber. Sastre, if he has recovered from his first week, is a threat. Wiggo, I never thought he was here to contend, but...I still can't see him making up 6 minutes on Arroyo.

Again...AWESOME!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Italy gets its stage win! Caruso from Katusha ahead of Cataldo and Sastre!

And now we wait...

ETA: Hmmmm...CN says its Petrov, who I didn't know was in the break, but Eurosport is calling it for Caruso.

ETA2: Eurosport now saying it is Petrov, so Italy still without a winner.

Don't want to see the maglia rosa group go through that last 180 degree turn. Probably gonna be some major carnage.

edit: looks like they all made it safe.
