The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Rider list up at Velogames but you can't set up a team yet.

28 points for Contador. Yowzers.
Looking at that All-Rounders list, it's going to be a fun Tour. Lots of contenders. Of course, it might just be a race for 2nd place... ;) :)

Yeah if you take Cav, Contador and A Schleck that's 70 pts

Solid team...I think Basso will be there in the end, but the mountains aren't steep enough for him to really rid himself of his rivals and he isn't punchy enough to keep up. And you stole my Boom pick...

I also like the Rodriquez pick, he was in my squad until I realized I had some points left over and I (stupidly) picked Gesink. He and his teammate Menchov are guaranteed to be out after stage 3.

I wavered back and forth on the Basso pick. I considered going with Wiggins instead, but I'm not sure if Wiggins was just a one-hit wonder from last year or not. I think Basso is the more talented of the two, but does he have anything left after his tough Giro win? And, like you said, he lacks the climbing acceleration of Contador/Schleck. We'll see I guess. :)

The Boom pick...I'm hoping that both he and Martinez chase after the KOM jersey. Boom is fun to watch, always seems to be in the long breaks.

I considered Gesink as well, but didn't have the points. After he lost all that time in the TdS TT, I can only imagine how much he will lose in the long 50km TdF TT.

Stage 3 is going to be fun...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I wanted to picked Kreuzinger but he was listed as a climber not an all rounder and I had to take two all rounders so that screwed up my team a bit. I think Frank may do better than Andy this Tour.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I went Boom for 2 reasons, one, he is Dutch and the Tour starts in the Netherlands so he should be active and he can ride cobbles, two, he has an excellent chance to place in the prologue. BTW, 70% chance of rain in Rotterdam on Sat, could be interesting.

I think Wiggins is one shot wonder and he never entered my thinking. There are some many people I can see in places 3-6 that the race for the 3rd podium spot could be more interesting than the race itself. Basso, F. Schleck, Sanchez, Kruetzinger, Sastre, Gesink, Menchov, Evans, if pressed, Wiggins, VDV, maybe even Tweetstrong.

As for Basso, I know he went deep at the Giro, and frankly he is no Pantani, so I have to think that he'll be a little off. However, given what we saw at the Giro, I think a fresh Basso is a real threat. With the right course, and minimal TT K's, Basso is right there, especially with his team.

Prez: Yes, he is 25 and you need to be less than 26 on 1 Jan...However, he isn't winning it, A. Schleck and Gesink are both eligible for the malliot blanc.

ssagard: Have you seen the parcourse? And their respective bike handling skills? Menchov is probably better off trying to walk to Arenberg.

Probert: I still think Andy is the better Schleck, if for no other reason than their skills against the clock.

Gesink just needs a little boost for the TT and he will be right in the mix. :)

Cancellara better have the big motor going at full strength.

With only 1 TT this year and no Team TT I figure that helps the weak time trialers, Schlecks, Geesink, Sastre a bit.

In terms of potential I definitely think Andy is the better Schleck, especially if he improves his TT but this year he hasn't done anything and couldn't hang with the climbs in the Tour de Suisse. Meanwhile Frank looked very good in the Tour De Suisse and did a very good final time trial to win. If Andy does not come into form between the Tour De Suisse and Saturday Frank will be the leader.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

That is certainly a possibility, but two things give me pause. First, as Andy himself says, the Pyrenees are not for 4 more weeks, it is likely that he is building form slower. The second, as was pointed out on another board, Frank is now on the wrong side of 30 and has 2 Top 5 placing, eventually you simply are who you are. Yes, I know that cycling is an endurance sport and endurance athletes tend to peak a bit later, but...
Although Andy didn't go as well as his brother did in Switzerland, he did beat him in the Lux TT championship, by over a minute, and rolled across behind him in the RR championship, his form can't be that bad.
