The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

By some fluke I won this thing last year despite how I only follow the sport during this tour and most of you guys follow it very closely all year.

Here is the 2010 Discovery Channel line-up that's hoping to repeat:

Alberto CONTADOR AST 28
Andreas KLÖDEN RSH 12
Egoi MARTINEZ EUS 6
Janez BRAJKOVIC RSH 8
Thor HUSHOVD CTT 18
Nicolas ROCHE A2R 6
Tony MARTIN COL 6
David ZABRISKIE GAR 4
Luis Leon SANCHEZ GCE 12

I'm starting to wish I went with Farrar for a sprinter because I've been reading a lot of good things about him while Cav and Thor might be off their form a little bit.

Roche is a sentimental pick from last year. I really enjoyed watching him ride and I would have never known about him until one of you guys picked him on your team and I just jumped on the bandwagon. He did quite well last year.

I think I'm going to regret not having Kreuziger or Cunego on my team.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Hey guys - good luck with the fantasy league this Tour. I just didn't get my act together to do a team - either did my wife. We have been following the events this Spring with the classics and the Giro so we will be following along here and on tv.

Got a note from our friends that are now living in the Hague in the Netherlands - they are at the Prologue today and at the first stage tomorrow. Hopefully, they will have some pics. I told them to run alongside the peloton with a sign saying hi to USCHO - but I am not holding my breath.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Prologue is about halfway over and so far Tony Martin leads the way with 10:10

Top 10 right now with a lot of heavy hitters still to come:

1.Tony Martin, THR 10:10
2.Geraint Thomas, Sky 10:23
3.Tyler Farrar, Garmin 10:28
4.Levi Leipheimer, Radioshack 10:28
5.Hogen Boasson, Sky 10:32
6.Brent Bookwalter, BMC 10:35
7.Adrian Malori, Lampre 10:35
8.Alexandre Vinokourov, Astana 10:38
9.Vasil Kiryienka, GCE 10:38
10.Robbie Hunter, Garmin 10:39
12.Dave Zabriskie, Garmin 10:40

Not a great start for Bradley Wiggins...way down in 31st right now with a 10:56.

Farrar with an outstanding time for a sprinter. He's made a strong statement that he's here to contend for the green jersey with Thor and Cav this year.

who gave you permission to post MY team that YOU are jealous of?

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I would guess that Andy will move up over 100 spots by the end of the Tour. ;)

Yeah I'm just busting on her;)

I still thought he'd do a bit better than that though. I thought he had improved his TT ability a little the past few years.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Spartacus DESTROYS the course in 10 flat. Beats Martin by 10 seconds to take over the top time.

Lance is fourth. Good start for him.

Contador is 6th and that wraps up the first stage.

1st Cancellara, 2nd Martin, 6th Contador, and Brakjovic 11th or 12th. Good start for my team.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I don't think my team is built to compete for the prestigious USCHO podium, but they had a nice day today. 1/2/7/8/9. As a bonus, I also don't have to root for riders I don't particularly care for.

You're not going to find many people with a better team than that after the first day.

I would have picked Levi but he just always seems to find back luck when it comes to the TdF so i stayed clear of him and went with Kloden instead.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Contador should pack it in Lance has got him beat. ;) Wiggo, Zabriske, A Schleck and Evans disappoint. I expected better from Andy at least in the top 50. Frank didn't have too bad of a ride.

For my team Upset a little bit as I had to drop Tony Martin from my initial team because I had too many points. Don't think he is a threat to take yellow though and most of the sprinters are far enough down that Cancellara should hold it till the roads tilt upwards.

Is anybody else going to try the Versus fantasy game. I'm not sure how it will work but may check it out.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Probert, Canc is safe in yellow. There are no time bonuses in Le Tour this year. So unless a break goes, its his for a while. Though I suppose its possible that he may have to drop back to protect the Schlecks on Stage 3.

Great ride by Canc and the Panzerwagon today! Though the course was too short for Martin, but boy way I wrong. Am pleasently surprised that it rained and Gesink didn't wreck, though I suspect that my Fant Tour team is already down to 8 since Cardoso finished 6+ minutes down, sounds like hors delay to me, cut time on the prologue can't be much more than 10%, right?...hope he crashed and the race jury takes pity...

I believe Cardoso is one of the two that they said had crashed.

I guess Phil and Paul weren't aware or forgot because they kept mentioning how Farrar had a chance for the jersey on bonuses with such a good ride.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Thanks Probert, I've since located pictures of whats left of Cardoso's face. He isn't listed as H.D. anywhere yet so, fingers crossed, though he doesn't look likely to do anything in the near future.

Tomorrow we have a chance for echelons like in the Giro. And we all know that Conti's biggest weakness is the wind. Fortunately, the echelons would likely form in the first part of the stage as the second half runs in land. It was the opposite in the Giro.

Edit: Shoot! Just checked the weather in Rotterdam, don't think that the 5 mph wind is enough to break it up...Come on Thor!

Not all of us want Conti to win! :)

Lets hope Conti has a mechanical and drops about four to five minutes tomorrow to everyone. Then we will have an interesting tour.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

ssagard, I understand, and frankly I'd like to see an exciting stage with echelons tomorrow. However, It doesn't look like it will happen. Though I did see a British Forecast calling for rain and wind tomorrow.

One last question, and this is not meant to start any LA/RS war, just a question. I noticed on the leaderboard at Velogames, and even within our own league, a HUGE percent, almost 100%, of the people who took LA also took Brajkovic. I realize he just won the Dauphine, but he is only like the 4th domestique here. Why that specific pairing? In my view it would be like taking Basso or Kruetzinger and Szmyd or something, except that Szmyd is counting as an all-rounder or a climber. Or maybe Schleck and C.A. Sorensen, again where Sorensen counts as a climber or all-rounder (and without the chance for the stage win).
