And after 2 late goals by Canada's team, the *** kicking was not as big as I alluded to earlier.

It's still a behind-kicking, though. Even 7-2.

Toronto couldn't even win a fight. Missed most of the game, but did get to see Recchi's finish from Patty. Heck of a play there.

I kinda like the B's throwbacks, but the Penguins WC jerseys are still my favorite. I really really want a Conklin jersey in that style.

Those baby blue Pens jerseys were awesome.

They showed Phil Kessel's first goal against Wisconsin on HNIC last night.
And then they said he would get killed if he pulled that in the NHL. :) It was kind of cool to see a college hockey highlight, though.

Nice win by the B's last night! I was reading the Leafs board and there isnt a lot of good things being said about Schenn, can someone fill me in?

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

Heading into MSG to see Detroit/Rangers tonight. Two struggling teams, who will beat the other?

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

I don't wanna say it but...

Howard looked **** good tonight. Lots of nice saves on some tough chances. The Rangers only goal was a nice play that the defense should have done a better job containing.

Oh, and Brad Stuart LEVELED Anisimov:

Points welfare! Hooray!

The 3-point system the CCHA is trying is really growing on me. When I would tinker with the numbers, it never seemed to bust any of the ties that accumulated; but it seems to be working this year for the CCHA. I'd like to see the AHL adopt it next.

Where I do hate the charity points the most is after regulation. Play the 5 minute overtime THEN issue the charity "thanks for tying" points.

Then that makes games that reach the shootouts worth more than games that end in regulation or OT. Why would teams do anything in OT to win the game when they can get the guaranteed point?

At least with the CCHA this season they decided to make wins in regulation or OT worth 3 pts, and a SO win just 2 pts with the loser getting 1 pt. The "Soccer" point method I think was how it was referred to a few years back (or maybe I'm blurring it with another sport's point system).

Seems like it works, eliminates the "magic" point that appears with the SO, and makes teams want to win in regulation/ot.

Yeah, if all games are worth three points then it makes sense and at least the CCHA is being smart about it that way if they're going to implement the skills competition to decide things.

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

How so?

3 Points for a win in regulation or OT.
2 Points for a Shootout Win.
1 Point for a tie in regulation.

Isn't that the way it works??

Is that how it's being done? I plead ignorance here since I pay little attention to the CCHA. If so I like that because it puts the onus on winning in regulation or overtime and not some stupid gimmick.

Yep! That's how it's done.
3 Points for a win in regulation or OT.
0 Points for a loss in regulation or OT.
1 Point to each team for a tie in regulation.
1 Extra Point for winning the shootout.

Thus, the winning SO team gets just two points, the loser one point.

Scoring is recorded as:
Wins - Losses - Ties - Shootout Wins

That means regulation and overtime victories will be worth three points. If a game goes to a shootout after the NCAA-mandated five-minute overtime, the winning team will get two points in the standings and the losing team one point.

That's what it is. If you're going to do shootouts it's the only thing that makes sense. The NHL should change their's.

They won't, everyone getting points is the way to keep everyone in the playoff race and thus keeping some arenas filled with people and false hope. Not that it worked all that great for the Panthers last year, but their attendance was a bit better towards the end of the season.

Also, as a fun aside not related to anything, it appears that Flyers fans found my blog after my last entry and some Pens fans jumped in to poke the bear. :D

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

10 wins out of 16 doesn't require a lot of welfare. Or are you referring to the teams just ahead of them?

The whole situation really, everyone is able to get cheap points and keep the standings less mobile.
