The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

The only thing that makes sense is he intended to blow the whistle before the shot? But, why did he intend to blow it then? And if he didn't intend to blow it until the non existent save was made, well, that's a goal.

According to the NHL statement on things, when Toronto did call down to make them take a look, Dennis LaRue told Toronto that he blew his whistle before it went in and that effectively ends any shot at reviewing the play because that's the call on the ice.

Nevermind that it's completely wrong what the official says, but it's also pretty much against the thinking of the game when they say to "play to the whistle" because... They did. And the puck was in the net for three seconds before the whistle blew.

The NHL ladies and gentlemen!

Fire him. If he doesn't want to do his job correctly, he can go get another one.

I've seen some bad intent to whistle no goals calls (which I always side with the refs on because it does take time between wanting to blow it dead and actually blowing it dead), but that's ridiculous.

It would almost make sense if that's what he was saying.

Instead, he said he already blew it dead and the play was over. BEFORE the puck was in.

Go ahead, let that blow up your mind.

That goal in the Kings-Rangers game earlier this year actually got called a goal when the same incident happened. The ref thought he had an intent to blow the whistle before the goal thing, but when they went back and looked at the video it turned out the puck had been in the net for a few seconds. The ref in that situation allowed the goal to stand after the review. So there is precedent for that to be called a goal, and the ref was just being a dick.

A comment brought up a good point: If the play is dead when the ref intends to blow the whistle, why is the time not added back to the clock? Then again, they would have had to add four seconds back to the clock in this case.

Because you'd be adding on like .3 seconds to the clock for every stoppage in play.

For now, let's just make the logical, palpable change: Allow the War Room in Toronto to overturn obvious blown calls like this; or get rid of the "intent to blow" miscarriages of justice and simply play to the sound of the whistle, rather than the thought of it.

Which is, you know, what they do in pee-wee hockey.
The article's concluding comment is right on.
