The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

I see it didn't take the Bruins too long to start sucking azz. Curious to see how this season unfolds since they're made the team worse this year, a team that didn't make it out the second round of the playoffs last season.

Another blogger, the guy behind Two-Line Pass was theorizing that the Bruins are due for a regression to the mean this year based on the shooting percentages of their big scorers last year as they were scoring on a very percent of their shots and said that there's really no way they can continue to find the net at that rate and a regression to the mean would likely happen.

It's a very curious way to start making use of the statistics that are out there and bring some sort of sabermetrics to hockey analysis. Since no one else has really tried to do this before it'll be interesting to see if pans out. He did say, however, that the Bruins are better than 80% of the rest of the Eastern Conference which... Isn't too much of a compliment.

Not a big stats guy but will admit that this one intrigues me. I wondered how the B's scored so many goals last year when they only have 1 seemingly talented pure scorer (Kessel, who was hurt for a bit). A fluky year where they inexplicably were connecting a lot more than you'd expect would help explain their relative success.

Great production by Vs. for the Panthers-Blackhawks so far.

Sharks defense is clearly unprepared for how Colorado was going to play tonight. The kid Matt Duchene is playing like a maniac tonight.

If Colorado could honor Sakic every night at home, they'd be pretty good this season.

Markov is out 3-4 months, so Montreal is screwed. Should mean O'Byrne can get 3 or 4 own goals in this season.

Good grief. The DJ's at the Swedish areans are worse than the ones in America.

So, the Detroit Red Wings pulled a Minnesota Golden Gophers.

"Two-goal lead early in the second? We Win!"

Well, as long as they didn't chop your head off and put it in a lobster pot, I suppose you're fine.

More importantly, how in the hell does Maltby have two points? :D

EDIT: Vokoun was a beast today. 52 saves, wow.

55 shots is the most by a Blackhawks team since a franchise-record 62 in 1989. Kane and Byfuglien were outstanding playing on opposite wings.

Well, they are doing 10 of those "honor" nights for former players. Ray Bourque night should be hilarious. Again. (No, I don't think they're doing Ray night.)

Hockey sabermetrics are awfully wonky but working with that premise that there's no way they can repeat performance like that... It's interesting and it'll be interesting to see if it plays out like that. It makes sense but it's also making the proclamation that last season's performance by Boston was a statistical outlier. We'll see.

How are people shocked by Vokoun? That guy is a sick freak of a workhorse.

GLM, I am patiently awaiting your slaughtering of the Thrashers post season chances on your blog. :)

I've known for awhile that Vokoun is a good goalie who has singlehandedly put some weak teams into, or at least into contention for, the 8th playoff spot. Nonetheless, saving 52/55 is still very impressive, especially against a 'Hawks team that is loaded up front.

Fleury just robbed Vinny Prospal. Great counterattack started by Gaborik up to Redden who found Dubinsky for a 2 on 1 opportunity.

Duby drew the defender and made a perfect pass to Prospal. Prospal one timed it but Fluery flashed the leather sprawled out and made a great save to keep the score knotted at 1.

Rangers have had the better of the play in the first five minutes of the second period.
