The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

Nice job by the Wild to outplay and outshoot the Sharks for 2 periods and yet still be trailing 3-2 (after leading 2-0).

What the heck is going on with the defense? It's supposed to be easier to transition the way the Wild are then to be a sucky defensive team and try to learn that. They can't stop anything or anyone. I thought we had good goaltending here?

Nabokov's stats have gone up since the Sharks switched from Wilson's defensive approach to McClellen's Redwingesque style. Since you hired McClellen's assistant, I'm not surprised. The real question is if you have the firepower to run with it.

What's going on, for now, with the Wild is lending credence to the "system goalie" argument that gets put forward by some folks. It's too early to declare anything but the Wild certainly need to improve the defensive work. For what it's worth, they did try to shore that up getting a guy like Zanon whose only job in the NHL is playing defense. Zidlicky may get exposed some more this year though.

So, we WAY overpaid Backstrom then? Figures.

Consider it Doug Risebrough's final parting shot to the midsection.

The Wild are absolutely horrible defensively right now. This brings up two thoughts for me right now:

-Why aren't some of you rejoicing?

-I know I should have seen this coming (Brunette, Nolan, etc. aren't exactly run'n'gun types of playeres), but it's really hitting home why a team that only barely missed the playoffs last year AND had a very productive free agency could be predicted to finish 12th or 13th in the conference by so many people.

It's because of what has become blatantly obvious right now. Last year this is a last place team without Jacques' system in place.

We never knew how bad the team really was all these years until now.

Or a helluva collapse by the Isles. Take your pick. Nice to see Bitz get a goal, though.

Charlie Brown: "Wow! What a game! The other team won on a last at bat home run and they were jumping up and down and dancing!"
Sally: "What did the other team do?"

Still better than Tim Thomas' deal.

Only because Thomas' is a 35+ contract.

Edit: This will bite me in the *** when Wilson offers Nabby a 4 year extension at 5 million per himself, of course.

"Look Nabby, you were atrocious this year, absolutely stunk it up. Your glove hand is slower than molasses and your 5-hole is bigger than Paris Hilton's. Our system is filled with goalies that could be good in another 3 years, there's no viable alternative for you, and no other team will give you more than 3.5M a year.....I'll give you 6M for 5 years."

Re: The 2009-10 NHL regular season thread: Slightly less meaningless hockey

That's OK though, at least they got rid of that jerk Kessel.

I don't think goal scoring is their problem right now. Thomas has been awful, but Rask can't prevent the goals either...

Wait until later on in the season for us to pillory Chiarelli for getting rid of Kessel.

You should just hope that it doesn't reach Joe Thornton levels of madness. If Kessel comes out scoring in bunches when he returns next month, look the F out.

I think we all know that this is inevitable.

I just want to state that I will not be the guy to start the first or fifth "Phil Kessell was trayded!11!" thread.
