Sunyac 21-22

I’ve been impressed with Brockport’s results all year so far. And this one certainly adds credence to that.

This Friday will definitely be an “are they for real?” game for the Golden Eagles.

Moffat says this is the best Cardinal team he's seen in the last ten years. Once he starts actually coaching, we'll see what they can do. They are extremely undisciplined from what I've seen. While Geneseo was taking tripping and hooking penalties against them, they were taking roughing penalties (x4, Geneseo x2), slashing (x2), boarding, cross-checking, and game disqualification. Same lack of discipline against Cortland and Brockport.

As a long time pole reader , I need to point out Geneseo is the number one team in the country this week according to the USCHO poll. I believe it is for the first time in school history. Despite wanting to see this for over a decade, it feels somehow hollow, as though it’s unearned. Maybe it’s the yearlong layover that we’re just coming out of. Maybe it’s the fact that the team was idle last weekend and gained the top spot due to other teams faltering. Maybe it’s just because of the highly fractious state of voting - four different teams received first place votes.

In spite of the above, I’m glad to see it with my own eyes, and am confident this won’t be the last time. There is a big SUNYAC weekend coming up and two good teams will be gunning for #1. I hope the boys will be up for the challenge.

As you allude to, the polls mean absolutely nothing.

BUT, Genny, Utica, UMB and Amherst will all be in the mix for some gigantic PWR data just after Thanksgiving.

That'll be a small sample-size, but it might have huge PS implications.

How times have changed, it wasn't too long ago we were on the this forum talking about how Oswego was leading the league in PIM's but their scoring was able to supplement them being down a man, Plattsburgh was a extremely disciplined team that was able to kill off the rare penalty they got. Now look at how times have changed, Oswego is 4th in PIM just 1 min above the 5th place teams and take out that nasty hit in the Plattsburgh game that resulted in a 5 & 10 they would be at the bottom of the league. Plattsburgh on the other hand looks like they are trying to set a PIM record for the year, plus how many games they can have where someone is kicked out of the game.

My views after the first couple weeks of the SUNYAC

Brockport 9 pts - As I said they looked like they were a team that could take care of itself in all zones their season was going to depend on which goalie stepped up and transfer Nolan Egbert has done just that. They look like they could be in the mix for a top 4 seeding.

Geneseo 9 pts - They came in as advertised a more balanced team then in the past, they don't have a combo like Collins, Keenan, Romano, Empey but they still have some POP as seen in that Potsdam game.

Oswego 7 pts - Same as Geneseo a much more balanced team then in the past, they don't seem to have the Offensive Pop as Geneseo or even Plattsburgh but they are no slouch and their Goal tending situation maybe the best in SUNYAC with 3 very capable goalies.

Cortland 4 pts - My first Jekyll and Hyde team, as I had said this is one of those trap teams that you just never know. They have shown they can score and they have shown that they can play defense, this coming weekend will just be another test to see if they are as advertised.

Plattsburgh 3 pts - This team is fast and plays a very different game then years before when on offense EVERYONE is on offense, I have seen a few times they had a 2 on 1 going into the offensive zone and the 2 were Plattsburgh's defensemen. If they can cut back on the penalties and shore up the goal tending situation (2 of the 3 have had injuries already and the other has played just about every min of every game).

Buffalo State 3 pts - They have only played 1 game so it is hard to judge them at this time.

Fredonia 3 pts - See Buff States answer.

Morrisville 0 pts - They are still learning and it shows, but they have some bright spots and while this year they may not be as competitive in the win column they have been competitive on the ice with not getting blown out in their games.

Potsdam 0 pts - The other Jekyll and Hyde team that has yet to show the Jekyll side of things, they have only shown the Hyde part of the team. They started out well in a close game with Oswego but this past weekend was ugly losing both games allowing a total of 11 goals and not scoring any. (I was excited to write about them on Saturday when Live Stats had them winning at Geneseo until I saw Live Stats has everything backwards HAHA)

Those 2007ish-2010ish Plattsburgh teams were SCARY good. All five guys below the circles on both ends of the ice causing havoc. Still shocked they didn't win a national championship one of those years.

I think it's pretty clear that the Covid disruption has caused some parity in the league. So many teams playing with so many new players. Given the different quality of the rosters, I assume it's largely temporary, but how long will it last? Which teams will do the best job incorporating and developing their underclassmen by playoff time? What kind of contribution will the DI transfers make? Lot's of more-variable variables this season.

I think this is going to be the case across Division III this year. Might be the most wide open year in the history of Division III hockey.

Look at some of the new teams in the USCHO poll right now...some new names in different spots and some familiar names NOT in there right now.

I'm hearing Aurora is no fluke either. They are going to be in the mix for awhile now.

Yes this year will be more about who you are then what you were, should be interesting to watch, may come down to who can roll 4 lines shift after shift, and who has the solid net minding and special teams...Go Lakers

Fredonia scored first against Potsdam at 6:46. David Sudbrink banged in a rebound that the Potsdam goalie lost site of after making the initial save.

Fredonia makes it 2-0 at 17:38 with another rebound shot in; this time by Ryan Bailey.

And that’s how the first period ends. Potsdam went 0 for 3 on the power play. Fredonia missed on their one opportunity. Potsdam led in shots, 18-16.

In other end of one scores, Oswego leads Brockport, 1-0, and Plattsburgh leads Buffalo Stste, 2-1. Geneseo and Cortland are scoreless.

Fredonia makes it 3-0 over Potsdam at 18:28 of the second on the power play. Ryan Bailey, at the backdoor, redirected the pass in for his second on the night.

And that’s how the second period ends. Potsdam is 0 for 4 on the power play, though they did hit a post. Fredonia is 1 for 4. Shots in favor of Fredonia, 29-25.

Other SUNYAC scores after two periods.

Oswego - 2, Brockport - 1, after the Lakers scored the first two.

Plattsburgh - 4, Buffalo State - 1

Geneseo - 1, Cortland - 1; Geneseo scored first.

Thanks Russell
Any reason there is no PBP on the Brockport feed? Maybe they never do?
I would listen to WNYO bu they are not sync'd
