Sunyac 21-22

Nice job dmac, thats a ton of work for sure, could be a 4 way scramble for the crown this year...long season hopefully lets wait and see

Geneseo 7-1 over Naz. Locked and reloaded on offense. Petizian looked really good in goal, much more focused and controlled in his movements than 2019-2020. The new guys looked really talented. Cmunt has a great shot and Morgan is a speed demon and great passer. Poolman will be a stud on D. Some of the new guys who haven't played yet will be able to offer additional offense. Nice to see Senior Levi Wunder achieving his potential as well. It will be interesting to see how they fair against better competition. Plattsburgh should be the first big test on Nov. 12 at home. The new bleachers should also be done by then.

The Offense & Defense looks just as good, with the players scratched could be the top players on most teams.

Which sometimes is exactly what happens as some of these players end up transferring to a different team. Case in point -- Robert Clerc on Potsdam.

From what I heard Moffat has told the players that this is the best team he has seen in Plattsburgh in 10 years.

It would be nice to see the Oswego-Plattsburgh rivalry back in full swing again. Throw in Geneseo, and this could be a humdinger of a three-way fight this season.

I saw Nazareth play three times last year (the only games I saw last season). Nazareth is not very good. Maybe I should say Nazareth is not good. I'm trying to be polite here, if you get my drift... :-)

I wouldn't use this game as a measuring stick for Geneseo's offensive capabilities this season. We'll have to wait a few more games.

Agreed. That's why I made the comment about better competition. There will of course be a drop off from the Keenan/Romano/Empey era, but it might no be as big as people might think.

Plattsburgh with as much fight as I've seen in a long time. They kept coming back to keep it at one despite being down by two goals multiple times. Fought through a five minute major. Tied the game and won in OT 6-5. All six goals coming from players who are new this season. Hatty from Joe Mancuso, Jake Lanyi scores one, and Bennett Stockdale with the tying and OT goals.

The question I have is how did they give up five goals to Cortland?

Meanwhile, Oswego showed up late due to a broken bus, and started out sluggish as Potsdam took a 1-0 lead. The Lakers fought back, controlling the game, winning 2-1.

They allowed 4 power play goals including a 5 on 3.

I think it's pretty clear that the Covid disruption has caused some parity in the league. So many teams playing with so many new players. Given the different quality of the rosters, I assume it's largely temporary, but how long will it last? Which teams will do the best job incorporating and developing their underclassmen by playoff time? What kind of contribution will the DI transfers make? Lot's of more-variable variables this season.

Their penalty kill was extremely passive and allowed a lot of passes into good scoring spots. The penalty kill got what it deserved last night. Oswego will eat them alive if they are that penalty prone tonight.

Can anyone explain the Sunyac hockey points system?

3 Points for a win in Regulation Time
2 Points for a win in OT
1 Point for a loss in OT or a tie
0 Points for a regulation loss

It's called a 3-2-1 point system some have said they believe the NHL should go to this system. It helps erase the mindset we will just play for the tie because as we know Points are very important and that extra Point for a OT win or couple points for regulation win can be the difference in playoff seeds.

As a long time pole reader , I need to point out Geneseo is the number one team in the country this week according to the USCHO poll. I believe it is for the first time in school history. Despite wanting to see this for over a decade, it feels somehow hollow, as though it’s unearned. Maybe it’s the yearlong layover that we’re just coming out of. Maybe it’s the fact that the team was idle last weekend and gained the top spot due to other teams faltering. Maybe it’s just because of the highly fractious state of voting - four different teams received first place votes.

In spite of the above, I’m glad to see it with my own eyes, and am confident this won’t be the last time. There is a big SUNYAC weekend coming up and two good teams will be gunning for #1. I hope the boys will be up for the challenge.

Could you forward this to USCHO? Their standings page is completely wrong....

I agree with you most points. I think the team was ranked #1 in the early 1990s. (?) Also, Geneseo did play Morrisville on Wednesday, even though the team had no weekend games.

For those of you watching the Geneseo v Plattsburgh game, as I understand it, Petizian was badly cut on the inside of the upper leg (I assume by a skate blade?) where his leg was exposed behind his goalie pad, but fortunately it missed the artery. I can't comment on the incident in front of the net that apparently caused the injury because I didn't see it. Any way, Harris did a yeoman job in relief and the new guys came through again. (Our commit from last year who headed south for Huntsville--B. Stockdale--appeared to score on a play close to the net but Harris came up with a great save.) Geneseo looks like one would expect, highly skilled but still adjusting to the college game. Plattsburgh and Geneseo have such a different style of play that it made for a pretty chaotic game at points. At least Geneseo now has some experience playing a really high quality team. I'm sure Plattsburgh is already looking forward to a rematch on their home ice.

Lots of sniping going on in Geneseo tonight. Nice to see balanced scoring with both the veterans and the new guys getting on the score sheet. But I just can't understand the Potsdam coach leaving their starting goalie Connor Green--the best player on the team--in the game for so long. Maybe he requested to stay in the game, but he looked thoroughly demoralized in the third period. The team seemingly gave up in front of him and decided to see how many stupid penalties they could take.
