St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I also don't believe SCSU will go to the high school level for a coach; BUT as Eeyore stated there may be high school coaches who would qualify for with the "at least 5 years college experience" part. Just curious that's all.

Hmmn. I obviously didn't make my implication clear enough.

It was funny. Clear and true.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Best guess of when a new coach will be hired is late May/early June. Resumes of interested candidates will be reviewed, then phone interviews of those qualifiers and finally an on-campus visit/interview.

My "shot in the dark" pick is Laura Haldorson. Hey, you never know . . .

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

SCSU has gone through the applicants and has their top handful of candidates?

Laura hasn't coached since 2008. I'm not sure what she's been doing since leaving the Gophers. I heard that the AD told the girls/players that a new coach would be in place for early to mid May. It can't help recruiting purposes when you don't have a coach. I heard that one player de-committed because of the uncertainty of a new coach. Their class seems to be small so far, hope that all changes.

As you know, you can't decommit if you signed an NLI. If you didn't sign, you didn't get money - so not a top recruit. Any 2015 or younger would be dumb to decommit until they knew who they new coach was. Why? Why not wait? Unless you were going to decommit anyway and just used this as an excuse to back out of your verbal commitment to the school.

Also, during the recruiting process, you know what coaches contracts are up and may not get renewed. This wasn't a termination early. This shouldn't have come as a surprise to any SCS recruit who committed.

You don't have to sign a NLI to get money or participate. Some top recruits won't sign them.

You can contact the school and have them release you. Obviously SCSU would try to convince the player to wait until a coach is named and stay committed, but the player may have other opportunites and want to move on. What school in their right mind (especially one without a coach) is going to force a player who doesn't want to be there to attend - how much of a cancer would that be on the team? They wouuld release and move on.

As you know, you can't decommit if you signed an NLI. If you didn't sign an NLI then in the real world and especially at SCS, you didn't get money - so not a top recruit. Okay, I amend my original statement. ;)

Here is the list ..
Tracy Cassano, John Harrington, Daniel Koch, jenny Potter, Jim Fetter, and Eric Rud.
Any thoughts?
That's a pretty good list. You have a gold medalist in each gender, and people who have played and coached on national-championship teams. Fetter and Harrington have experience with the Husky women, while Rud has been at SCSU on the men's side. They all seem qualified, so it becomes a question of what the program wants for a philosophy moving forward. Success will come down in large part to the ability to recruit, so I'd go with the person who was most convincing in that regard. It'll be interesting to see how this hire compares with that of Bemidji State.

1) Harrington

2) Harrington

3) Potter

they need someone with name recognition, well proven personal success in hockey as well as team success if they want any hope of competing against the rest of the WCHA

barring that, maybe Michigan & Michigan State will get women's teams, the Big 10 women's league will form, and the rest can join up with CHA and then SCSU will be able to compete on a somewhat equal basis

I'm not sure how qualified Potter is, but she does have MN connections to players. As a coach, though, she's only had one year at a Division III school and her team was just so-so. Depends on what St. Cloud is looking for, I guess. I would think if they want to compete, they'll need a coach who has proven success.

I would go with Harrington for coaching, keep Fetter aa Assistant and bring Rud also as Assistant for recruiting :).

" I would think if they want to compete, they'll need a coach who has proven success."
SCSU will not pay their head coach what it takes to compete and have a proven coach with success. So if they can get Potter on the cheap, good for them. Harrington has been around the block and will take a bit more of persuade.
How about two 1980 gold medal winners going head to head behind the benches!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Isn't this fun??? SCSU Women's Hockey getting some attention!

No, I don't think Jim Fetter automatically gets the job.

Not convinced that John Harrington is the best choice.

Think someone "new" to the coaching business with an absolute solid resume as a player, leader and a WINNER might be the answer. If I have a daughter good enough to be recruited to play D-I hockey and Ms. Potter wanted to visit, I would put on the coffee and make some rolls!! Jenny Potter just seems to be the kind of person that could put some life into the program.

Whoever is picked they will have their work cut out for them . . .
