St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I think if the Huskies let Jim Fetter get away, it would be a huge mistake.
I saw first hand how he built wayne state into a top 10 program from a perennial bottom feeder.
Plus when you take into consideration the drawbacks at WSU, crappy city, no on campus rink, very little fan support.
At SCSU, he'll have a GREAT facility, a great hockey state to pull talent from plus he's connected to great talent as Canada's u18 coach
Where he's won 2 world championships.
He's 3 time coach of the year in CHA, national coach of the year, solid recruiter, excellent tactician, no brainer if you ask me.

Im not going to say he is not qualified for this job, but he has been part of this program for 3 seasons, he has not improved the recruiting, this year seems to be the best class of freshman players in the last 3 years, the previous 2 classes were big in heart, short on skill. Just from watching him interact with the special team players I believe he might have been in charge of the special teams, and the Huskies were one of the worse in the country in both, not sure if that makes him a "excellent tactician". I guess their could be a scenario where you bring him back as a coach and bring in some new up in coming coach (preferably not one with the same last name as the coach). I think the program needs a change. The program has excellent facilities to offer, a good school, there is no reason why this program cant attract better talent. The talent has to be brought in by the coaches, they have failed.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

One quick last thing Gvsualumni, You mentioned the u-18 canada connections, Jim has never brought in a player from the u-18 program. Wish the Fetters the best of luck, wether its here in St Cloud or somewhere else .

There have been persistent rumours in the hockey community (in Ontario at least) for many years, rightly or wrongly, that St. Cloud's women's hockey program was in significant danger of being cut. Especially given the high number of Ontario players who were burned in recent years by the very sudden cancellations of programs at Wayne State and Niagara, this pretty much guarantees that most prospects will not seriously consider St. Cloud unless they have no other attractive options. The best recruiter in the world would find that concern tough to overcome.

SCSWH cut? Thats a total stretch of a rumour, I guess its possible that people are saying that, but I also heard that Elvis was shopping at Target.
This program is not going anywhere, the mens & womens are the only Div 1 programs in the school, they just spent 40+ million on their rink, have you seen the womens/mens facilities? they are not going anywhere!
The lack of recruiting is not entirely on Fetter, Giessen can take a lot of the blame as well, they just havent done a good enough job convincing the top talent to come here, part of the reason is the lack of success the team has had, and when your competing in the WCHA, not only are wins tough, but winning the top recruits is not easy either.
You seem to be a big supporter of Fetter, you his agent, or Miss Fetter? :D

Big Sandy, while thats true, 2 points , 1, he did get some u18 talent to WSU, 2, I think a reason he hasn't gotten any to st. Cloud is, my opinion the girls would want to play for him, being an assistant, they're not playing for him and by the time the girl gets on campus, Jim could be gone to take a head coach spot at another school.
Just my opinion.

No big sandy, not his agent, and certainly not his wife, I was a wayne state fan, long before he got there and saw the difference he made once he got there.
I am a friend, but I can be objective and very critical, I saw the great job he did at WSU and I believe he can be even better at SCSU

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

On behalf of my husband and I, we wish Coach Giessen and his family the best of luck. He has put in many years of hard work into the program. Sometimes change is best for everyone, this might be one of those situations. let the search begin, who is out there that could come in and improve this program?

"He's done a wonderful job here...we're just going in a different direction."

What a bunch of politically correct mumbo jumbo!

Translation: "He's done a wonderful job here so we're firing him. And the different direction that that we thought we should pursue is one that includes winning."

She could have diplomatically spoken the truth instead of using bureaucratic double talk.

That's not doublespeak, it's just basic courtesy. Apparently you aren't happy unless people are being slagged despite having managed to divine the truth of the situation.

You might want to read my post again. I said that "she could have diplomatically spoken the truth"...meaning the whole truth...the conclusion that you seem to have arrived at is far from accurate with respect to what I would have preferred.

Trust me, no one wishes harder than I do that people would actually say what they mean, but that's a means to an end, not an end in itself. The goal is to make it possible to understand what people actually mean. You don't seem to be having any trouble understanding what the St. Cloud athletic department actually means; you just want them to dump on Jeff Giessen.

Edit: Let me add that when I say, "You don't seem to be having any trouble understanding what the St. Cloud athletic department actually means . . ." I mean that everyone gets it. There's no attempt to mislead here; they're just being polite. The problems with "bureaucratic doublespeak" arise when those engaging in it are attempting to present themselves in a better light than they really should or are trying to misrepresent their motives or obscure the facts. None of that is true in this example and making a big deal out of it in these cases actually makes it more difficult to deal with the instances when it's a problem because it produces an atmosphere of people making an issue of it just to be a *******. So when there's nothing beyond common courtesy involved, let it slide; save it for when there really is obfuscation going on.

You're not paying attention. I just explained that your assumption with respect to my motive was far from accurate. Her comments could have been more truthful/accurate while being diplomatic about it instead of using diversionary language which was essentially BS. That was my point...not to dump on Giesson.

Gee...thanks for your translation. Without it none of us would have known why Giessen was terminated.

That was a very gracious response to an uncomfortable position, regardless of how much writing was on the wall. Thumbs up to Coach Giesen, and best of luck to the team and program moving forward.
These cases are always tough. I felt Giesen did a nice job of coaching the players that he had, but once the last of Lesteberg's recruits graduated in 2010, he didn't have enough success recruiting to move back up the standings. For several years it was the same story; the Huskies couldn't score. I echo your sentiments -- best of luck to both Giesen and the team in the next chapter.

Really? Exactly what do you think she should have said that would satisfy you but not turn it into criticism of Giesen? That should be an interesting needle the thread.

And when you make a big point of accusing someone of lying about their motivations for saying something, you're on pretty shaky ground for getting snippy when someone else expresses skepticism about your own motivations.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Giessen just never was able to get any scoring after Lesterberg's recruits where done. The teams still played hard for Goose, but at this point, I think it was clear some changes needed to happen.
