St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I'm not but my nephew is, and yes he might agree,
Jerry Kill has to go in his eyes, or when he gets mad
It's Kill Jerry :)
A few that came before Kill were fortunate to get out of town with their heads still connected to their body. As was the AD that hired them.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

You never wish anyone to loose their job but Giesen has had ample time to turn that program around, and has done very little to improve it. The question has to be asked, or maybe it doesn't. My opinion, he must be replaced. do you give his assistants a chance, or do you find someone new. They have not been able to convince the top new talent to the program, their facilities are second to none, it's a excellent academic school, (comparable to other WCHA) so is it the programs lack of winning or the poor recruiting? Maybe they need someone with ties to the Minnesota area where a lot of great talent comes from? Maybe they need someone with ties to the u-18 USA or Canada hockey? Not sure, but change is needed. Does anyone have any ideas, who could replace him or if Fetter is name coach , you hire a new assistant with potential to attract the best freshman from this country and Canada..

Interesting--and tough--questions regarding Women's hockey at SCSU. It's the holiday season, so this reader won't be directly calling for anyone's job. But IF Giesen is replaced, I would expect the entire staff to be replaced. First, we already have a bit of paternalism with Mr. and Ms. Fetter on the staff. From what I hear, Ms. Fetter adds a nice touch, and a lot of the players appreciate a female coach in the vicinity. IMO, it would create a whole new set of issues, but that's just me . . .

Historically, the SCSU Women's team has not particularly fared well in the WCHA. The Huskies had a very competitive team when they finished in third place--thanks to a skilled and dedicated senior class (HOGAN, Pezon, Roberts, Nelson, et.al). Unfortunately, that was the exception not the rule for the past 13 years.

I've always had the uneasy feeling that SCSU administration was just happy that we can field a D-I and cared little about success on the ice. SCSU fans can no longer blame former AD Morris Kurtz--he hasn't been here for two years. And no one can fault new AD Heather Weems, as she has been VERY successful in her first 1 1/2 years, with winning teams in just about all the sports--save for the Women's hockey team. It will be very interesting to see if Jeff Giesen is offered a new contract. Someone told me that this is the last year on his current contract.

I have been a very loyal and consistent fan for the Huskies. But last Saturday I was bothered by a nagging cough and the "Minnesota Blues." This often happens when the golf courses close, and the temp stays in single digits! That NEVER keeps me from the rink, but I chose not to attend the UMD-Huskies game. The sad thing, I didn't have a bit of guilt.

I had the same "Minesota Blues" last Saturday, but for different reasons, my were hockey related. We can all agree that the WCHA is arguably the toughest in womens hockey, so its not easy for the Scwh team, but at some point there has to be improvement. My hubby has what i describe the "old hockey coach" eye, he likes to watch the benches, between whistles, before and after whistles and during the play (a little too much if you ask me), he has noticed, specially this year, coach Giesen seems disengaged, he is leaning against the glass a lot, and seems to have very little opinion to his players when they seem to make a good or bad play. He does a lot of observing and little communicating, I know this is his style, but there is nothing wrong with some tough love, and encouragement , or even better , some yelling to help players make plays, some players dont see the ice and plays that should be made, he can actually help in that area. The assistants seem (rightly so) to not want to over step their positions, they do communicate a bit more when players come to the bench, but usually at that point its too late.
You could see the difference between the 2 styles of bench bosses, Shannon Miller coach Giesen in the 2 game series.
This years class of freshman seem to be better (offensively) than the last 2 or 3 years,, they are playing a lot, thats a positive sign, specially next year when they loose 2 of their top scorers. That another contention we have, we were excited too watch the all freshman line, they brought some much needed energy, in the few games they played together they contributed with some goals, but for what ever reason they were broken up, the teams secondary scoring dried up, and now we only have 1 line who is contributing in the scoring.
Coach Giesen by all accounts is a good guy, but at the Div 1 level, results have to outweigh likeness, this program needs a shake up. Maybe you keep the Fetters, make Mr Fetter the coach and bring in a coach that can help in recruting , or you get rid of all of them and start new, but its hard to disagree, the program needs change.

Dont agree with SCSU having facilities "second-to-none" but if SCSU continues to do what they are expected to do the 2nd half, i'm with you that the coach has to go. He has had plenty of time....

Overall/St. Cloud State Record: 78-165-33, 8th season

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

SCSU is in a difficult situation, competing against 5 schools that are close by for many of the same players. What really differentiates SCSU from the rest? In many ways they are at a disadvantage to all the rest, being in the middle, and a suburb of the TC metro area. At least Bemidji can differentiate themselves by their small town seclusion in the north woods. North Dakota … is in North Dakota, Duluth a unique city. Mankato is very similar to St. Cloud, but it is far enough away and not being the suburb St. Cloud is, to have a small town feel, which is often attractive to students.

Not sure I agree with all your points here. Mankato is 20 miles farther from downtown Minneapolis than St Cloud is, but the drive time is entirely a matter of what part of the metro you're coming from. Elk River is a northwest suburb; it's about a half hour from Elk River to St Cloud. Shakopee is a southwest 'burb; it's about a half hour from Shakopee to Mankato. Gotta drive through a lot of farm country and small towns to get to St Cloud, as you do for Mankato. It's a stretch to call St Cloud a suburb.

Agree Bemidji is a bit more north-woodsy. Yes, ND is in ND--two strikes againsti it, IMO. Agree that Duluth is a unique city, and it seems they have admited a few more American-born female hockey players in recent years. It's funny you left out Wisconsin, because it's quicker to get there than UND (unless you're from the northwest metro).

If you're coming from Warroad, UND is the clear choice, unless your name is Gigi.

I'm not sure about their dorms

Think both of you are over analyzing, St. Cloud men's program has no issue attracting talent or they wouldn't be ranked 1st in the country. The womens program needs a shake up, they have accepted mediocracy, I'm willing to bet a lot of those girls want change, too much of the same thing for too long. Their record speaks for itself..

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Does anyone but me think a contributing factor in things going the wrong direction was increased competition for the Minnesota kid from D-I programs of distant conferences? Not the only factor. I think SCSU staff has to get better recruiting results from outside the state in addition.

Seems both SCSU and MSU-M used to do better in state than either have for awhile now.

Is time for something to change at St. Cloud I think. I would agree that facilities and location are not the problems.

the kids going out east aren't exactly the pick of the litter, sorry, but it's true

SCSU does a VERY poor job of attracting American athletes from outside MN, and none too well with Canada either

SCSU is the least unique of all the schools in the WCHA, I left out MN, WI, & OSU simply because it is so obvious I didn't think it needed to be mentioned, how long it takes to drive to a school means almost nothing, it is the culture and climate (and I ain't talking weather in this case)

Dorms are awful. I attended SCSU for a year and a half before transferring. Plus you have to take a shuttle to park because they made you park in that gravel lot that's over a mile away. And let me tell you, waiting for that shuttle to come on a Sunday in the winter... not fun.

Most of the players on the SCSU women's team live right across the road from the Brooks Center--newer condos with ample parking.

Most comments have agreed that recruiting in the past few years has not been very good. Inside the state, in the metro, up north, outside of Minnesota, in Canada and Europe, etc., the fact remains that recruiting remains a weakness. Not sure what the administration is willing to do. Obviously, one approach would be to change the hockey staff.

At least there is SOME discussion regarding St. Cloud State Women's Hockey!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Interesting discussion. I noticed that one of the SCSU assistants moved over to a local DIII program in the St. Cloud area, College of St Benedict, a few years ago. We at SCSU were glad for that! The weak leadership that the Huskies have, has now been duplicated at this DIII school. SCSU and CSB now have little to offer women looking for a great college hockey experience. The Boomer is right...the whole area needs new women's hockey leadership.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

This from SCSU athletic director Heather Weems--part of an article about replacing personnel in the athletic dept.

Weems said head volleyball coach Michelle Blaeser has had her contract renewed. Women’s hockey head coach Jeff Giesen’s contract is also up after this semester.

“I’m looking at that particular program and it’s under evaluation,” Weems said. “We do that for every program when its season ends.”

So, we at least know the program is under evaluation.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I think if the Huskies let Jim Fetter get away, it would be a huge mistake.
I saw first hand how he built wayne state into a top 10 program from a perennial bottom feeder.
Plus when you take into consideration the drawbacks at WSU, crappy city, no on campus rink, very little fan support.
At SCSU, he'll have a GREAT facility, a great hockey state to pull talent from plus he's connected to great talent as Canada's u18 coach
Where he's won 2 world championships.
He's 3 time coach of the year in CHA, national coach of the year, solid recruiter, excellent tactician, no brainer if you ask me.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

It hurt SCSU to host the USA Hockey Development Camps for several years before the upgrade, and even with that, to put them in dorms without A/C, mediocre food service, they turned off more prospects by getting them too much information for the sake of filling the rink for 10 days.
