A few that came before Kill were fortunate to get out of town with their heads still connected to their body. As was the AD that hired them.I'm not but my nephew is, and yes he might agree,

You never wish anyone to loose their job but Giesen has had ample time to turn that program around, and has done very little to improve it. The question has to be asked, or maybe it doesn't. My opinion, he must be replaced. do you give his assistants a chance, or do you find someone new. They have not been able to convince the top new talent to the program, their facilities are second to none, it's a excellent academic school, (comparable to other WCHA) so is it the programs lack of winning or the poor recruiting? Maybe they need someone with ties to the Minnesota area where a lot of great talent comes from? Maybe they need someone with ties to the u-18 USA or Canada hockey? Not sure, but change is needed. Does anyone have any ideas, who could replace him or if Fetter is name coach , you hire a new assistant with potential to attract the best freshman from this country and Canada..
Interesting--and tough--questions regarding Women's hockey at SCSU. It's the holiday season, so this reader won't be directly calling for anyone's job. But IF Giesen is replaced, I would expect the entire staff to be replaced. First, we already have a bit of paternalism with Mr. and Ms. Fetter on the staff. From what I hear, Ms. Fetter adds a nice touch, and a lot of the players appreciate a female coach in the vicinity. IMO, it would create a whole new set of issues, but that's just me . . .
Historically, the SCSU Women's team has not particularly fared well in the WCHA. The Huskies had a very competitive team when they finished in third place--thanks to a skilled and dedicated senior class (HOGAN, Pezon, Roberts, Nelson, et.al). Unfortunately, that was the exception not the rule for the past 13 years.
I've always had the uneasy feeling that SCSU administration was just happy that we can field a D-I and cared little about success on the ice. SCSU fans can no longer blame former AD Morris Kurtz--he hasn't been here for two years. And no one can fault new AD Heather Weems, as she has been VERY successful in her first 1 1/2 years, with winning teams in just about all the sports--save for the Women's hockey team. It will be very interesting to see if Jeff Giesen is offered a new contract. Someone told me that this is the last year on his current contract.
I have been a very loyal and consistent fan for the Huskies. But last Saturday I was bothered by a nagging cough and the "Minnesota Blues." This often happens when the golf courses close, and the temp stays in single digits! That NEVER keeps me from the rink, but I chose not to attend the UMD-Huskies game. The sad thing, I didn't have a bit of guilt.

SCSU is in a difficult situation, competing against 5 schools that are close by for many of the same players. What really differentiates SCSU from the rest? In many ways they are at a disadvantage to all the rest, being in the middle, and a suburb of the TC metro area. At least Bemidji can differentiate themselves by their small town seclusion in the north woods. North Dakota … is in North Dakota, Duluth a unique city. Mankato is very similar to St. Cloud, but it is far enough away and not being the suburb St. Cloud is, to have a small town feel, which is often attractive to students.
If you're coming from Warroad, UND is the clear choice, unless your name is Gigi.
I was talking about their hockey rink, and changerooms, not many have better..Dont agree with SCSU having facilities "second-to-none" but if SCSU continues to do what they are expected to do the 2nd half, i'm with you that the coach has to go. He has had plenty of time....
Overall/St. Cloud State Record: 78-165-33, 8th season
Think both of you are over analyzing, St. Cloud men's program has no issue attracting talent or they wouldn't be ranked 1st in the country. The womens program needs a shake up, they have accepted mediocracy, I'm willing to bet a lot of those girls want change, too much of the same thing for too long. Their record speaks for itself..Not sure I agree with all your points here. Mankato is 20 miles farther from downtown Minneapolis than St Cloud is, but the drive time is entirely a matter of what part of the metro you're coming from. Elk River is a northwest suburb; it's about a half hour from Elk River to St Cloud. Shakopee is a southwest 'burb; it's about a half hour from Shakopee to Mankato. Gotta drive through a lot of farm country and small towns to get to St Cloud, as you do for Mankato. It's a stretch to call St Cloud a suburb.
Agree Bemidji is a bit more north-woodsy. Yes, ND is in ND--two strikes againsti it, IMO. Agree that Duluth is a unique city, and it seems they have admited a few more American-born female hockey players in recent years. It's funny you left out Wisconsin, because it's quicker to get there than UND (unless you're from the northwest metro).

Does anyone but me think a contributing factor in things going the wrong direction was increased competition for the Minnesota kid from D-I programs of distant conferences? Not the only factor. I think SCSU staff has to get better recruiting results from outside the state in addition.
Seems both SCSU and MSU-M used to do better in state than either have for awhile now.
Is time for something to change at St. Cloud I think. I would agree that facilities and location are not the problems.

I'm not sure about their dorms
Dorms are awful. I attended SCSU for a year and a half before transferring. Plus you have to take a shuttle to park because they made you park in that gravel lot that's over a mile away. And let me tell you, waiting for that shuttle to come on a Sunday in the winter... not fun.
He (and his wife i woul guess) might end up at BSU.
