Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Another Olympics, another epic fail for USA Hockey. Can't wait for us to get relegated at the World Championships this year!

It's payback for the 1980 gold medal game!!!!

It's a common misconception that we beat the Soviets in the Semis and the Finns in the Finals. Back then the medal round was round-robin. We did need to beat Finland to win the gold, but the Soviets got silver and Finland bronze. Had we lost the Soviets would've won gold, the Finns silver and USA bronze.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Just out of curiosity other than perennial hockey 'powers' such as, oh, Bolivia and East Timor, what's the last country to be shut out in consecutive games in Olympic hockey? This would not be a great way for the USA to end the tournament.

Germany in 2010. Though they aren't one of the Power 6. In 2006 it was actually our neighbors to the North getting shut out in back to back games. Canada actually got shut out in three games that year.

2002 and 2010 weren't epic fails. This one, however, was close to one.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

I expected this. I also expected the same result if it had been Canada playing for bronze. It's gold or nothing for both of us.

4-0 Say goodnight, Gracie.
Agree with you. And you know what? IMO, if you're not willing to play for Bronze, you don't really deserve the
Gold.

At least now I can resume cheering for Loui Ericsson, Tuuka, and Bergeron (who I still think is the best all-around player in the NHL).

Best commercial thus far is for the Paralympic Games... Where the American jabs the Canadian with his stick a few times. Love it.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Today certainly was, as is getting shutout back to back games. On the surface, finishing 4th isn't an epic failure but I would agree with you that it is when you consider how it all went down.

Personally, couldn't care less about the World Championships.

Well, it doesn't matter too much what you think but, getting relegated, or even just playing in the relegation round, is pretty embarrassing to hockey in this country.

At least attempting to give a * about the WC would do a heck of a lot for hockey here.

Maybe so, I don't know. I consider myself a hockey fan in general, but even diehard hockey fans in this country don't really care about the World Championships. Doesn't it coincide with the Stanley Cup playoffs? I think that's a big reason why.

It does and that's a big reason but, the attitude displayed towards it really effects the way USA Hockey handles the Olympics. They based a lot of selections for this Olympic team based on play in the NHL and the Stanley Cup playoffs, which is not a good idea when it comes to the Olympics. They're not the same. They need to find out if guys can come together on short notice and win. Do guys have the ability to play in consistently for 2-3 weeks, can they play against teams that are going to better than the last team they faced? Do guys have any sense of pride in representing their country? If it's a burden to add two weeks to your season, if you're available, for the World Championships then what is it for the Olympics?

That's the big problem with USA Hockey, they don't put pressure on guys to stand up and represent. They don't press guys to play at the WC, they don't press the teams to medal. If they press guys to medal at the WC, "if you guys don't medal, it's a failure," then we wouldn't have had this embarrassment today. USA Hockey is not respected around the world because of things like today and it's because of the attitude at the top.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

ok let me ask you then, are there proven world championship players that should have been included on this olympic team? or are you saying that unlike other countries, too many American players decline the chance to play in the world championships?
