Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Didn't I just say that the Gulag and the Holocaust were worse? I suppose I could have said much worse, because they were. Nowhere did I use the phrase "mass genocide" either. I'd say that you should settle down, but I know that's a fools errand. You thinking I hate America doesn't really bother me, so feel free.

"Fool's errand?" You? Impossible. But you do seem to think resolutely it's important to emphasize our shortcomings in comparison to the world's worst totalitarian regimes in any reference to their crimes. One does not have to be anti-American to advance these arguments. But these are the arguments anti-Americans customarily advance.

It was Minnesota North Star who used the phrase "mass genocide." Repeating it in response to your childish excretions evidently confused you.

I was simply saying why I thought it was ridiculous to expect Russia to put those atrocities on display, when we don't even though they weren't nearly as terrible. But by all means, continue to go nuts.

I agree. But you're the one who referred to "most" of the Indians being "murdered." No? Evidently suggesting you apply a little historical perspective and resist slandering America is "going nuts."

These things happen in Russia. Nyet to see, move along.

I love it. Reminds me of Henry Marshall. He was the Agriculture Department official investigating LBJ's pal Billie Sol Estes. He was found dead in '61. Shot 5 times. And for decades the coroner's ruling was suicide (it has since been changed to homicide). It takes a certain admirable determination to shoot yourself five times. . .with a bolt action rifle!

Hey OP!

Put a sock in it. Stick to trolling the political threads.

Does anyone know how the Women's hockey tournament was seeded? You have the top three teams in the world (and medal favorites) all in one group. Its bizarre. Sure as heck helps the home town team potentially advance though.

From the IIHF site:

Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament in Sochi 2014

Participants: Nations ranked 1-6 according to the 2012 IIHF Women’s World Ranking plus two qualifiers.

Seeding:
Group A: Canada (1), USA (2), Finland (3), Switzerland (4)
Group B: Sweden (5), Russia (6), Germany (8), Japan (11)

Note: This is the only major change compared to 2010 as the preliminary round will take place in two tiers, as Group A will consist of teams ranked 1-4 while Group B will be comprised of teams ranked 5-8. Quarter-finals: 3A-2B & 4A-1B, semi-finals: 1A vs. winner 4A/1B, 2A vs. winner 3A/2B.

So, for preliminary, sure it is tough. However, for elimination rounds it will fix itself.

Ah, ok thanks. Still seems like an odd set up, but at least theres some logic to it.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

I heard it was done in an attempt to avoid the blowouts from past Olympics in the group round.

Ah gotcha. Although I guess that raises the other questions about whether a sport with so little talent depth (or breadth maybe?) should even be at the Olympics. I imagine the fact that its a winter sport maybe the saving grace.

If you take out women's hockey, you take out men's hockey, and that's not going to fly...
