Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Ah gotcha. Although I guess that raises the other questions about whether a sport with so little talent depth (or breadth maybe?) should even be at the Olympics. I imagine the fact that its a winter sport maybe the saving grace.

They're hoping to grow the game. In 1992, only 18 countries and 71 athletes competed in the Freestyle Skiing event. Now it is 30 countries and 277 athletes.

Here's my problem with nbc. Why not air stuff live in the morning on the network, especially on the weekends? It's like they're intentionally trying to put forth the worst possible coverage.

Could not agree more-NBC covers the entire Olympics this way-delay everything and only show what they want, when they want, preceded by a whole bunch of what they consider human interest stories. Will never ever happen-but i sure wish the coverage of the Olympics was like the coverage of some political events-on all channels all the time.

That is what gets the ratings. Statistically, the female demographic would not watch the Olympics in nearly the same numbers without those stories. The male demographic is going to watch regardless.

Doesn't have to be all channels all the time. They could have one channel that shows stuff live, and on other channels manage the content for ratings. Seems like they did that for the summer olympics several years ago. Some of the obscure events were on obscure cable channels. Wasn't necessarily ideal, because, for example, you'd see every equestrian competitor, even some that were pretty bad, but at least if you were a hard-core equestrian fan, you got to see it, pretty much unadulterated.

You have a point about the ratings, but they are showing the stuff live that they will show tonight. They've done this for a few days straight- doing the team skating, and nothing else. Which they will show in prime time, for sure. At the same time as the skating, there are other things to show (as the canadian channels are showing us)- this morning, we could have seen the biathalon, 95M Jumping, and luge finals- all live. And since the team skating coverage is starting AGAIN right now (5pm EST), there's no fear to replay stuff. That's all they showed this morning, and are showing it again- only having the Sweden-Japan hockey game as an alternative. Thankfully, we have access to CBC....

At least NBC is putting everything online... I was able to watch the Men's Slopestyle overnight the other night without problems... It's on a computer screen, but it's something...

So true-that is why they have added more figure skating events. They are playing totally to that demographic. They did it with Gymnastics in the summer and Figure Skating in the winter. Most women just are not big Biathlon fans;)

Do the Russian hockey fans have some sort of bullhorn noisemaker? I keep hearing some sound in the background during the women's game.
