What did you expect? Г is for ГУЛАГ or C is for СТАЛИН ? It's not like a review of American history in a similar event would show the Tet Offensive or Bull Connor using dogs and fire hoses on protesters.

For the most part I enjoyed it. I also was glad they got somebody with a little intelligence to comment on the sequence on NBC, not just Bob Costas going "where is that country, anyway?" Although they were a bit heavy handed, e.g. talking about Uzbekistan being authoritarian. It is, but why was that comment necessary?

And did anyone else think Putin was trying just a little too hard to look like an emperor? Every time they cut to him, he looked like he would go "thumbs down" and then have someone hauled off to be executed. Smile, you bastard!

I also read that several of the famous Russians in the alphabet sequence were gay. Supreme irony.

Was surprised the Olympic Official (who's name is totally escaping me) made references/apology to the what sounded like the difficulties with physical settings and to the LGBT issue. It was almost like a political speech- almost. Seemed to come to the edge of saying something and then veer off. Don't remember a speech like that before

I thoiught that, too, but I also read an article that said he was really speaking to the media, and basically saying, "Focus on the athletes, please."

Next time the Olympics are in America, they better show how most of the natives were murdered, and do a portion set in the South in the early 1800's.

Countries have segments they aren't proud of. Asking them to put it on display to the entire world is a little much.

"Most" of the natives were "murdered?" Source? Look, nobody's proud of how whitey treated the Indians. But these breezy, reflexive, ignorant comparisons between that treatment and the Holocaust or the Holodomor are just that--ignorant.

I think his point is that we shouldn't expect them to show their history of mass genocide because we wouldn't show our history of mass genocide. Even if ours "isn't as bad"

We have no history of "mass genocide." That's my point. Any assertion to the contrary is both ignorant and typically anti-American. There was no Wannsee Conference in America. We didn't put all of the resources of a modern industrialized state to the task of destroying every member of a race. The Nazis wanted to kill every Jew everywhere, not just in the Reich. The "Final Solution" was official government policy. And they d*mn near pulled it off. Even as they were losing the war, trains to the extermination centers had priority over the needs of the military. It is a gigantic libel to compare that focused and funded effort with our insensitive, clumsy and occasionally brutal handling of the Indian "problem." But for some, sh*tting on Uncle Sam, and comparing America with the most evil regimes in history comes easily.

Apparently, the suits that the American speedskaters are wearing are a big deal in speedskating circles. Also, (Every Lehman?)'s neon sunglasses are awesome.

Emery. If he sticks with it, the kid's gonna wind up on the podium one of these days. He's from west suburban Chicago and the nearest track is in Milwaukee. He's also carrying a 3.75 gpa, brought homework with him to Sochi and will graduate on time.

Sarah Burke's absence is being felt at the Sochi Olympics, but the International Olympic Committee has ruled that her friends can't honour her memory the way they want to. Burke, the Canadian freestyle skier who won four X Games gold medals and helped establish halfpipe skiing as a discipline (it's making its Olympic debut in Sochi), tragically died after a crash in halfpipe training in January 2012, but many of the Olympians in Sochi still remember Burke fondly and want to show the world what she meant to them. Sadly, though, as Australian snowboarder Torah Bright discovered, the IOC has banned helmet stickers honouring Burke.

The NFL isn't in the same league with those people. Not even close. They similarly banned certain patriotic expressions on the mask of our lady goal tender (sorry, her name eludes me). This is in keeping with that.

I have a warm spot in my heart for Jim McMahon. Remember? When the NFL banned his Nike (?) head bands, he wore one that said "Rozelle."

Exactly.

Of course the Gulag and the Holocaust were worse. Which makes it even more ridiculous to expect them to advertise it.

Except for the obvious fact there is no "mass genocide" in American history, Ward Churchill notwithstanding. And the Gulag pales in comparison to the Holodomor. You evidently feel strongly about making the moral equivalency argument about America every chance you get. Why not read up a bit on the worst crime in the history of the world? It might give you some much needed perspective. A good place to start would be with the award winning documentary Harvest of Despair.

Didn't I just say that the Gulag and the Holocaust were worse? I suppose I could have said much worse, because they were. Nowhere did I use the phrase "mass genocide" either. I'd say that you should settle down, but I know that's a fools errand. You thinking I hate America doesn't really bother me, so feel free.
