What did you expect? Г is for ГУЛАГ or C is for СТАЛИН ? It's not like a review of American history in a similar event would show the Tet Offensive or Bull Connor using dogs and fire hoses on protesters.
For the most part I enjoyed it. I also was glad they got somebody with a little intelligence to comment on the sequence on NBC, not just Bob Costas going "where is that country, anyway?" Although they were a bit heavy handed, e.g. talking about Uzbekistan being authoritarian. It is, but why was that comment necessary?
And did anyone else think Putin was trying just a little too hard to look like an emperor? Every time they cut to him, he looked like he would go "thumbs down" and then have someone hauled off to be executed. Smile, you bastard!
I also read that several of the famous Russians in the alphabet sequence were gay. Supreme irony.
That opening ceremony showed Russian history just as 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy showed New Zealand's.
