Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

1980 Olympic hero Vladislav Tretiak, who single-handedly defeated American hockey team, came in with the Olympic Flame. However, he was replaced part way through by Vladimir Myshkin, who promptly fell on his face.

They wanted to replace him with a non-goaltender like Krutov but the Russians have never practiced that situation.

Today's Google salute to the Sochi Olympic Games is sneaky.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

As good of a place as any to post this video. Very proud of my alma mater for being proactive on this issue, and as a double bonus - it features several hockey players as well as coach Schafer.

Edit to add: "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study" is a quote/paraphrase from Ezra Cornell and is the university's motto. Cornell has never had any religious ties or admissions requirements, admitted African Americans in the 1860s, and the first women matriculated in 1870, so this kind of inclusiveness is deeply ingrained in Cornell's DNA.

Well done.

I wonder how an entirely homophobic country deals with the fact that plushenko, their national hero, is as queer as a three dollar bill.

I believe the preferred simile is: "as gay as a birthday tablecloth."

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

I'll wait to watch the ceremonies 'til tonight. So don't anybody give away the surprise of the Press "sisters" participating as a gesture of accommodation to the trans gendered.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

So, this Chobani thing. Does anyone know why the Russians are actually not letting it into the country? Every article I see about it basically says "ROBBLE ROBBLE SCHUMER MAD HOW CAN THEY NOT LET OUR ATHLETES HAVE THEIR YOGURT" but provides little or no detail as to what these import requirements are that the Russians are saying are not being met.

Huh?

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Sorry. Here's one example from the Washington Post. Basically, it seems like there's some sort of "public-health standards that American dairy products must meet", which Chobani (and any other American-made yogurt) has not been certified to meet. And we're kind of saying "hey, how about let this in anyway because it's for our Olympians and Chobani is a sponsor of the Olympic team" and Russia is saying "no". So, like... so what? I mean, Russia is a sovereign nation. They should make an exception in this case because we asked nicely? Because Chobani gives money to the Olympic team? Because Schumer is sticking up for a NY-based business?

Anyway, the point is, all these articles are saying the same thing and none of them go into any detail about WHY Russia says the yogurt can't be imported, which would seem to be relevant information. But the tone of the articles I've seen just seems to be, like, "how dare they say no?!?!"

Did nobody think to just bribe the import guy? These are Russians we're dealing with...

Honestly, the Russians are probably right. When it comes to the USDA, the tail wags the dog and these companies will do anything to make a buck. The bribes don't go to the Russian import guy, they go to our politicians and inspectors.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

That opening ceremony showed Russian history just as 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy showed New Zealand's.
