Back when I was in college we used to joke it wasn't an official game until one of the defensemen on the women's team got two minutes for checking after just laying someone out in the open ice. It was almost like clockwork. They still hit, they just get two minutes for it.

And I wish my beer league allowed as much contact as women's hockey does officially. No full on hits but you can still angle into the boards and play the body somewhat, especially around the net.

I'm pretty sure this is all adding up to Russia never getting another major international event. We hear about these stories piling up now, and I'm expecting a real bulk of them to explode into the light of day once people start leaving for home, within the next week or so.

Is it possible for Russia to lose the World Cup because of this?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! This is the kind of thinking that drives me wild. Welcome to this century. Women's bodies can take anything that men can. See recent changes to the combat status of women. They may not be as fast (altho elite athletes can run rings around some men) but if they are all women they are on the same level and should be allowed to be the athletes they are.

I live in this century, thanks :p Like I said, there aren't that many men who can take hit after hit after hit. I would bet if the NHL was starting now they wouldn't allow checking either.

NHL players are in Sochi and practices have begun. It seems all the players, staff, and family flew together on four charter flights provided by the NHL and the PA.

Eve Muirhead of GB is not only a looker, but she's a bagpiper! :rolleyes:

I called her brother Tom's loss to Sweden in the gold medal match at the World Universiade in Trento back in December. It's quite the curling family.

So apparently the snowboard pipe is FUBAR

Snowboard riders continued to condemn the quality of the halfpipe at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Monday night, with former gold medalist Hannah Teter saying Olympic officials should postpone the competition until the pipe improves and two-time gold medalist Shaun White saying he cannot throw his best tricks under current conditions.
