Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Good game last night, guys. It was pretty much what I expected to see - an evenly-played defensive battle with some good goaltending. If it's any consolation, SLU definitely played well enough to win.

Congrats on making it to Albany and yet another stellar season! I've always held Coach Marsh in high regard while he continues to put together a solid team year in and year out. Looking forward to seeing you again next year!

Ditto.

SLU is a great program from Joe Marsh on down. The game itself could have gone either way. Here's to more good things to come for SLU and U.

Thanks! Union has come a long way. As a Saint fan it really sucks to play in Albany back to back years and leave the Semifinal game having either outplayed the competition of definitely played well enough to win and be on the losing end. Kincaid was great. Union got a good bounce on their second goal. Yankovitch should have gotten a Game DQ and major as that was definitely a spear not a slash and as Critsports said the officiating was adequate at best because things like that have to be called.

Union has a good story this year and I am all for that. The only reason I wouldn't root for Union is if them winning knocks Yale out as an At-Large team because I believe Yale can do more damage in the NCAA's. But, I'd still like to see Union play their guts out tonight and see who the better team is.

Good luck tonight to Union and congrats to Leaman on down for a great season and run.

Final thought....Albany....Good riddens. Ever since SLU beat BU in 2000, that building has been cursed for us. Last night the ice was horrible. It was about 75 degrees in there and they had to wait every period for the ice to freeze a bit more. It hurts skating teams like SLU. The puck was bouncing everywhere. The boards stink. Good riddens. Only problem is it should be moving north to Lake Placid not south to A.C.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Got6

Yale do damage in the NCAA's?? Only way would be a first round matchup with St. Cloud (only team with a worse NCAA win % than a certain NC school :D )

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Flying Wedge still flies. They play every year at Reunions to this day with pretty much the 70's era line-up. Wedge Rythm guitarist, Rip Westmoreland is a big saints hockey fan. Had beers with him in SF a few weeks ago.

We had about 20 Larries show up at Jillian's in San Francisco yesterday afternoon. It was a good game with the wrong result. I have no complaints. I enjoyed following this year's team a lot. They far exceeded my expectations after losing last year's D corp.

While we lose some stud seniors, when was the last time three great impact rookies like George Hughes, Pete Childs and Kyle Flanagan? They make the next few years look real promising. Nothing wrong with defensemen who can score and a skill forward who looks to me like he's going to keep getting better.

For the players' sake here's hoping they pick up their 20th today.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thanks to all the players & staff for a wild rollercoaster ride. We were with you every twist & turn.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Congrats to the Saints on a great season. As an outsider I'd say there's nothing to be ashamed of. This weekend might not have ended up like you wanted, but back at the beginning of the season nobody thought you'd even be here.

My hat's off not only to the team, but the fans as well. I enjoyed another post season weekend with a great group of people. You guys truly are a class act. Enjoy the off-season and I hope to see you all next season.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Sure not the result any of us were looking for in either game, but hats off to our Seniors. From their first game where I think Cunningham and McKenzie both scored to tonight where Cunningham gave a great effort and McKenzie did too, this class put together a lot of wins and have a lot to be proud of. Derek Keller with his quiet leadership was a tremendous contributor and a true leader in the league this year as a defensemen. Vermeulen is 5'6" of pure heart and effort. Caister gave us a couple of good years. Curran was a well-conditioned work horse that could beat guys 1 on 3 forechecking. We had two class goalies and guys like Keliher and Weaver just rounded it out. I am pleased we have Sean Flanagan for another year and hope both he and the 'almost senior' Jared Keller come back flying and healthy.

I can't say enough about these kids and their families who were always great to catch up with at the games. It goes by so quick. With the kids we have had for the last couple of years, you just wish you could stop the clock and have these guys forever. Hope the seniors enjoyed their ride as much as we enjoyed watching them.

As for the game, well, we came to win on Friday night. Though we could and maybe even should have won on Friday, we didn't. Today we played like it was a game we didn't want to play. It would have been nice to get the win and notch our 20th, but really, if the consolation game doesn't have NCAA ramifications, I don't even think they should play it. A few guys went hard, but that was a meaningless game that I just wanted to be over as soon as it started. It was shear ugliness and that is not how I am going to remember this team. I am going to remember this team for its series win over Clarkson!!!:D

As for the championship game....well, that is 2.5 hours of my life I will never get back. Cornell hockey is like watching paint dry. Simply put, they manhandled Union tonight. The were bigger, stronger, and actually more skilled. I think Union played a better game and blew their stuff in the semi-final. Cornell came in knowing what it takes to win on Saturday and there was no stopping them from getting the W. It was a snoozefest, however, and though they may be successful, watching the Big Red this weekend was painfully boring. For the way they dominated, the score really should have been about 7-0. Other than some desperation by Union in the last two minutes, it was pretty one-sided. There was one good, entertaining game all weekend. If that is what ECAC hockey is going to be and how the officiating is going to be, good luck to the league filling seats in Atlantic ****ty! This could have been a weekend of fun, entertaining hockey with maybe Yale and RPI there instead of Cornell and Brown. Instead it was narcolepsy on ice! :p

That about sums it up. Thanks for four years of fun guys. You left your mark at Appleton two weeks ago, and it will last a long, long time.

. . . or anywhere else. This league needs to enforce the obstruction rules. How many good scoring chances are snuffed out every single game by NFL-quality tackles in the slot? How long can one out-of-position player tie up an opponent from behind in order to give his teammate time to skate over and take the puck? How much longer are the refs going to stand by and watch a player take a stick across the shoulders and get body-slammed on his back while he's trying to skate to the puck? How is it acceptable that when a player is attempting to get up off his knees an opponent can drill him in the back and knock him back down on his face FIVE TIMES in succession while the puck is carried to the other end of the ice? Three feet in front of the referee? In last night's championship we even had a goaltender dancing back and forth across his crease obstructing a forward from getting around the net to forecheck - for about five seconds. Not to mention uncalled hits from behind that send unprotected players face-first into the boards.

:(

Well said.. btw what was the ECAC thinking sending this to AC from now on? It's not that close even from New Haven. Couldn't they have done it in New Haven or Hartford?

Coming right back at you. It was really neat yesterday seeing you sit with us SLU fans and wearing your Q'Pac jersey with pride. I know that you have become close friends with some of us and the SLU fans are the lucky ones. Same goes for CCT fans JoeCCT and VicB.

As for the weekend, things didn't work out as we would have liked but that in no way diminishes what this team and the seniors accomplished. Everyone associated with the program including, but certainly not limited to, the parents/families of the players and us-fans, deserves a ton of credit.

My son and his girlfriend, both RIT grads., are here this weekend and we watched the Selection Show together this morning. Kudos to the Tigers for making it but they're going to have their hands full in Albany.

I am really going to miss our seniors and their parents/families. That said, I humbly say thank you to them for an incredible, but all-to-fast, four years.

I guess the fans of all teams, including me, made it very clear how they/I feel about the move to AC. AC must have given away (to the league) the store in order to get the tournament moved there for three years. I suggest that there's more interest in college hockey where I live (which is minimal) than there is in AC. That move befuddles me, but it is what it is.

On a personal note, I decided last week to quit the 2-3 liters of soda a day (did anybody say addiction?) and switch to Diet Green Tea. My son immediately noticed that my weight was reduced and that my color and mobility are better. At that point, I unintentionally pulled a "Yogi-ism" after noting the recent switch in beverage and said, "I love going to SLU hockey games and need to stay alive in order to go in future years." Chris responded, "I now know why it took you/Dad 6 years to get through a 4-year school." Something tells me that TimU is going to nail me on this one - he owes me!!!

Enough said.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well another season has come and gone and it was fun one. Got to see some good games at Appleton and make some fun road trips. Following SLU hockey sure makes the long, freezing northeast winters more bearable. Congrats to Coach Marsh and the team on a fine season and being competitive all the way to the end. Going to miss all the seniors! Hopefully the new crew learned from and continues to play with the same intensity. I thought a lot of the new guys did a good job stepping up. As usually it was great seeing a lot of fellow SLU fans at games and meeting some other fans from other schools. Outside of 2000 I really won't miss the games played at Albany but will miss hanging out there - Atlantic City is a horrible spot but I may try to get there at least once if SLU makes it. Everyone have a great summer and already looking forward to next October.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I'm just going to echo the thoughts already posted by everybody, as it states exactly how I feel as well. Would have been nice to hit 20, but it was still a very successful season, and one that none of us really saw coming.

I'm going into the tourney moving with an open mind. I'd like to see it do well, I really would, however it will take the perfect draw of Cornell, RPI, Yale and ?? (Quinni? Union? SLU? Clarkson?) to even have a hope of filling their 11k stadium to reasonable levels. I might go down next year if its a good draw, will definitely go if SLU is there, only because travel wise for me at school its a wash (2.5 hours both to Albany and AC). I'll be interested to see what happens in 3 years once this experiment plays out.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Enjoyed reading everyones SLU comments for the year. The senior class had incredible character and were terrific leaders. The team outperformed everyone's expectations except their own. It stings now, but ultimately, it was a great season. Go Saints.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Check out Dan's latest installment in the WDT, everybody.

Dan, I was one of those people who stopped you at Appleton after a game to tell you I appreciated your efforts. I'd like to repeat that now that the season is over. You did a tremendous job, and I'm looking forward to following your coverage next year. Thanks.

Ditto that from me. Dan notes in the latest installment that he can't even skate, but his work was/is so outstanding that it was assumed that he had played hockey his whole life.

From a die-hand fan from a distance, Dan's work has all but brought me and many others into the lockerroom. Dan, I humbly say thanks to you, and submit that your great work has indirectly made a great hockey program even greater.

I hope to soon meet you.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Ditto the ditto. Dan's vid highlights and blogs were excellent. Players coming off the ice into the lockerroom?...can't beat that. Thanks for all the extra effort.
Add Dan's work to the list of great things about SLU hockey - another enabler to a deep addiction and passion many seem to share.
A fine season that sets the table for next year. Enjoy the withdrawl everyone!

BCarlisle, here's a link to some fine old Flying Wedge...

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Am assuming here that most who comment on and/or read this thread receive the St. Lawrence Magazine. That said, I recommend that everybody read the bottom portion of both pages 21 and 23, and the left portion of page 52 in the latest issue. The first two messages sure put things into proper perspective, and the last bit of information on page 53 is about an individual who is one of my best friends, who many of us know well, and who posts on this thread.
