Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

For all the great SLU hockey fans who don't get the St. Lawrence Plaindealer I want to post Bob Prier's letter to the editor in this week's edition:

Saints Supporters
To The Editor:
Thank you to those of you who made the trip to Colgate this past weekend. The overwhelming support for the St. Lawrence Hockey Team did not go unnoticed, the players and coaches are fortunate to have so many good people rooting for them. It is not very often that the road team has more fans than the home team in the playoffs, you made a difference. Thank you.
Bob Prier

That is awesome!! Both the fans there making noise and BP for publicly thanking them. Both are just awesome! Now, lets make a difference in Albany!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Apparently being a college student pays come income tax time. Something I probably should have already known, but overlooked for some reason. Well today I brought my 1098T form from my student loans with me to file my income taxes and came back with an extra $1500 on my return. That's more than enough to cover the rapid refund loan and get my money here on time to make this weekend in Albany affordable! Now I am even more excited for this weekend because I don't have to sell any of my belongings to make it to Albany (as Muskieman suggested ;) ).

I think it also applies to having children in college, as my parents were saying the SAME thing the other day when they found out their returns... "Wow, that's much higher than I thought we could hope for."

I'm 26 and claim myself now, so it's good that they're giving breaks either way :)

Thanks, GoldenBear for sharing this. Thanks, also to Bob Prier for your classy comments. Thanks, lastly, to my fellow SLU fans -- I wouldn't trade any of you for anybody.

At my age, now pressing the big-60, wishing time away is a huge mistake. But, is it Friday yet?

Congrats. to Coach Leaman on winning COTY. Not to disrespect Nate, but I'll take Joe anyday anytime, though, in a heartbeat.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hey everyone-

The live blog will be going legit for Albany. As in not on the message board where you have to keep hitting refresh. Brian Sullivan and I will be live-blogging all four games from Albany with CoverItLive. You will be able to link to it from USCHO.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Not that this comes as a shock to anyone on this forum, but CONGRATULATIONS to Travis Vermeulen on being named ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward!

http://ecachockey.com/men/2009-10/Weekly_Awards/20101703_M_Best_Def_For_Winner

Made my day to see that! Congrats to Verm....and his linemates!

Glad I had a small part in him being a Saint, which Wellsy thanked me for again last weekend! He is such a class kid.

I'll never forget Joe talking about him (and Parenteau) when they committed. Joe said: "He plays like a warewolf fighting for the puck!"....I'll leave the other parts out. Wellsy said he was the first guy over the boards in Sioux Falls when on the PK and he will be the same thing here....talk about calling it right! Not bad for a kid like that to put up 41 points so far. Just wonder how that "only" puts him on the 3rd team. I would't trade him for many guys in this league.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Quick question for you guys. I assume SLU will be at UVM next year so I am curious as to how the team looks (graduations, etc..) I am going to assume you are a young team and won't lose a lot to graduation/pro's?

That said best of luck in Albany (as long as you don't knock UVM out by winning the ECAC ;) but that said if UVM doesn't make it I hope you guys get in and do well...the fans have always been a class act.

Not quite sure why you assume it will be @ UVM, as we travelled there this year, and it has been on a rotating basis for the past 3-4 years.

That said, we lose several strong players again this year, but we have some good looking recruits coming in, possibly headlined by the record-setting Greg Carey from Burlington (CCHL, Ontario). However, I'd rather leave talk of next years team for when this year's team is finished, so let's delay this until that time comes.

Ah sorry I got that off the 2010-2011 schedule thread that it would be at UVM (didn't check this years game) and no worries not a jinx was just curious..good luck in Albany.

The same can be said for your fans and team. I love playing you guys, whether it be in Canton or at the 'Gut.

Congratulations to Travis on winning the Best Defensive Forward Award. I've never seen a harder working hockey player than him and he has been/is still really fun to watch. He's wearing the 'C' for a reason, along with Derek Keller.

I am not sure how old a lot of SLU fans are but your teams from the late 80's were something to watch. They were big, strong and fast (men among boys in the ECAC) and while it sucked to be on the other end 20 years later I have the utmost respect for Joe Marsh and the program there. You are always one team that as a hockey fan was a joy to watch ...even if you were killing us, and believe me you did quite a bit.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Also want to congradulate Travis on his award, he sure earned it. Would like to ask everyone if they realize what a job Coach Marsh, Bob and Mike did by righting the ship.
On Jan. 23th they beat a very good Yale team 4 -2 than for the next 9 games they were in freefall ending with one of the most discourging game I can remember with the 3-2 loss to Dartmough. In that stretch they won 1, tied 3 and lost 5.
That's when the staff got them turned around , and with the injured players back ,beat Harvard 4-3 ,Clarkson 2 out of 3 and 2 great wins at Gate and on to Albany. The way they're playing now I believe they have a shot at the whole thing this week-end.If Tisi stays hot, the 3rd and 4th lines playing out of there mind, and Mike McKensie on fire, watch out.
Win or lose this has been a fun team to watch and to the seniors, thanks again for the 4 years we've been able to watch you and good luck to your futures.

I was a student at SLU during that era, as were a few others here, and there are several more who have been following SLU hockey for a lot longer than that.

Those were great teams. But to me what's even more amazing looking back is how strong the ECAC was. St. Lawrence did lay some epic beatings on UVM during that time period, but UVM was pretty darn good in its own right, and owned Harvard - arguably the best team in the league over that entire decade. There were excellent hockey teams finishing 4th and 5th in the ECAC back then.

You were a "student." First time I ever heard that. I couldn't resist busting on you. :D :)

All kidding aside, am looking forward to seeing you and many others tomorrow.

Just noticed this Thread is now at #900....we sure have done a good job of keeping it active.
