Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Great series...Congrats SLU...As far as I'm concerned you have the best fans in the ECAC !! Good Luck in Albany !!!

As a UVM fan I agree SLU was always a great team to play with good fans (even though they crushed UVM) . Always good to see SLU doing well. Good luck on the rest of the tourney and crush Cornell (their fans suck) as for the winner of the Union/Quin. series...Quin. fans were all over me earlier this year for no reason when I wished them luck but said it would be better for them if they had a stronger schedule (and many neg reps for that) so beat the hell out of them if you play them.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Walk-on Matt Raley gets the series winner. There are very, very few schools where true walk-ons have a chance to crack the lineup. St. Lawrence (and Joe Marsh) is in that elite company.

Good luck in Albany. Too bad the TV coverage will be substandard (again).

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hey guys,

I posted the wrong link before:
http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/section/blogs05

I assume you all have it bookmarked anyway and it won't matter ;)

Good stuff as always Dan. We appreciate it.

On Raley's goal, watching it on B2 I didn't fully appreciate the play that Flanagan made. SLU was outnumbered, but he created enough time and space for himself to see the ice and for Raley to at least get a puck to the net. And as we all learned in our favorite classroom on Park Street . . . YOU NEVER KNOW.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Are you saying it was a weak goal(being nice) ?

Well, they all count for one, so anytime you shoot and it goes in it's a good shot. I didn't have the same look at it that Evin did - maybe it was a knuckler or otherwise changed direction on the way in. But I have a feeling Evin wasn't too pleased with letting that one by him, especially at that point in the game.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Wow what a 3rd period! This team has fought hard just about every game all season, proud of what they have done because I do not think they were picked by most to go too far. Congrats to Coach Vaughn and the Raiders, your program and fans are a class act. Looking forward to enjoying one more year in Albany because I doubt I will be able to get to Atlantic City

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Tim...It looked very soft to me. I met Harp34 and three or four other SLU guys who sat in front of me. They were great SLU fans totally into the game. One guy right in front of me played at ATC one year before me...lol ! Said he had 54 points or something in one year...who was the guy ???

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Checked out the Worcester Sharks site & found that TJT has taken over the team scoring lead with 23 goals, 15 in his last 18 games. It still seems strange to me that a guy that has been successful at every level doesn't merit a job in the NHL--although maybe not with the SJ Sharks. Nobody gave Peverley a second thought, and then . . . along came the Thrash.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

How excited is the fan base about going to Albany? How many fans do you guys anticipate St. Lawrence will be bringing with them? 500? 1,000? More!? The ECACs are played in a GREAT venue with 0 bad seats in Albany, so its absolutely worth the trip. You guys have been on a great run and I see no reason why it won't continue!

See you in Albany! I'm certainly going!!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I am super excited about another trip to Albany for the Saints and myself! I will be traveling with a group of Saints fans and I hope alot of other Saints fans show up as well. I would imagine somewhere between 500-1000+ fans will show up (weather permitting).

Well, Raley was at least recruited as a walk-on and has been a class act all the way with playing a steady role and being a great student. He is a really strong, athletic kid. Possibly should be a linebacker instead of a hockey player. Child is also a walk-on and Dyer who saw decent ice time and Keliher are straight show up unrecruited walk-ons. I agree totally, that makes it special. I look forward to having another walk-on make All-American like Heffler did in goal. The best player will play and that is one thing that makes Joe a great coach.

As for Raley's goal, watching the video it almost looks like that was tipped (at first it looked like it was on the ice, but was a top shelf goal). Plus Evin was partially screened. It maybe wasn't the best goal to give up but I sure wouldn't crucify the kid. I have seen a lot of softer goals in the past year.

Well, it looks like Union in the late game in Albany. How about Brown????? Cornell versus Brown and SLU versus Union. Wow.....I had a feeling about Brown at Yale, but even that feeling is not enough for me not to be shocked!!![/B]

I too am totally shocked by Brown's upset of Yale. Got6, how do you think we match up against Union? I thought Union would be a better match for us than both Yale or Cornell would have been, but some others disagree  But it is the ECAC so who knows.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, here are the matchups:

#11 Brown versus #2 Cornell
#5 SLU versus #3 Union

First, congrats to Brown, Cornell and Union for joining the ECAC dance. Brown just busted Vegas with that and I believe their only goal in the 1-0 win was a shorty! Unbelievable. That is a HUGE upset.

Saint#1, to be honest, I was hoping for Yale. For one thing we owe them big time after last year in Albany!!!! I thought Yale might be vulnerable and though they are speedy, their defense is average and their goaltending is questionable. I wonder if they still have the numbers to get to the NCAA's. I am not positive, especially if there are more upsets along the way. The one team I did not want to play was Quinnipiac. Not because we can't beat them, but there is just too much bad blood between these teams and little Clarke had our number this year in nets. We always play well against Cornell. Union is for real. I was at the game at Union and we had a lead going into the third and just played a sloppy third period. Our record against the teams in Albany is 1-3-2 this season. Nothing is easy this time of year. Let's just hope for good officiating and a solid effort and lets see what happens. I'll be there!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, my son (Chris) was home this weekend, and figured out my PC problems (we think). He got here 2:30 PM Sat., pulled an all-nighter for my employer, worked another five hrs. there today (new server install, whatever that means), fixed my PC, and left for NJ at 8:00 PM tonight. The kid's a "work-a-holic" and reminds me of many of the guys who post here and a certain team I root for.

Just finished reviewing about 5 weeks worth of e-mails, but Chris didn't want me to respond to any until I use this PC for at least a week to ensure/test that all problems are fixed. My apologies for not responding to e-mails from several of you in recent weeks.

If there's ever a year I wanted to go to the FSLH Banquet, it is this year, but found out on Saturday that I need to be in NJ from 3/31-4/13 to help care for my Mom (91 and now wheelchair bound). Will be at the Banquet in another way, though.

Am too lazy to go find it, but do recall posting here (I think in November) that this team could win 20 games if the PP and PK Units both improved. Nobody believed it (including me, honestly), but here we are one win away from that number. Unreal.

Spaceman just called with game 3 updates. Yale outshoots Brown but loses 1-0, and Union beats Q'Pac 2-1. So, it's Cornell and Brown in the early game and us and Union in the late game as I see it.

However and whenever this season ends, it will always be special. Looking forward to seeing all of you in Albany.

GO SAINTS!!

Thanks for the info. This is pretty much how I viewed things as well. Union is no joke but I feel that if we bring our A game we should be alright. I also felt that about last year with Yale and look what happened. I don't think I can handle another deflating loss like last year to Yale.

I WILL be in Albany one way or another. Right now I am on a tight budget trying to figure out how I am going to be able to afford the hotel and tickets. But I have not missed the Saints in Albany yet and I am not about to!!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Anyways, I plan on attending and I am sure SLU will bring a good fan base to Albany as usual. We don't bring as many fans as Cornell, Clarkson or RPI would bring but we hold our own. Hopefully it will be a good weekend of hockey all the way around. Gooooo Saints!!!!!!

Ok now I'm a little ****ed. Apparently this post on the ECAC Championships thread is worth a hit from Red Cloud. Red Cloud do you care to clarify why you repped me for absolutely no reason???

I'm betting I join you, soon.

At this point any of the teams willl be a tough match up. I was most worried about Quinnipiac if they had made it as we were horrid against them this year.

Union is going to be a very tough match up for a variety of reasons. We are 0-2 against them this year. Both games were reasonably close but they are a very balanced team that does an awful lot of things very well. The one other factor I don't like is they will in effect be playing a "home" game being the closest team to Albany. They turn out roughly 2,000 people at their rink so the $64,000 question always has been.... how many fans will turn out if Union or RPI makes it to Albany???? We will need a good turnout to be heard that's for sure.

Union will also be highly motivated. I said to some friends before game one at Colgate that it's tough to beat a team 4 games in a row but in this case Union only has to beat us a third time. I'm hoping our fortunes turn out better. Unions stregnth??? They average 33 shots on goal a game, and score an average of 3.54 goals and are second in goals allowed so those are two pretty scary stats.. Believe it or not they have a prolific offense and were actually tied with Yale for most goals scored. They also have some players that have some very high plus/minus numbers. Milan was also the 7th ranked goalie in the country in Goals against at 2.06. Having said all that who knows........my only point is they have had an impressive season both home and away and are at or near the top in all the stat categories so they have been very consistent.

At this point we have nothing to lose or prove.....we have way exceeded expectations. We just need to rest up and come out with our best effort and energy and hope there isn't another blizzard making getting there difficult!!! Kain is playing as well as anyone in the league and we have just as good a chance of advancing as any of the four teams there. Cornell is always good but less scary away from Lynah. And Brown???? Our own personal nemesis??? If I were an odds maker I'd rate Union and Cornell about an equal pick 'em, us third and Brown fourth (on paper)...BUT as Yale found out this weekend.......that's why they have to play the games!!!

I'll be in Albany with Tim U, the Tupper Lake crew, I believe Muskieman is going so the more the merrier......come on all you Saints Fans....let's turn out in big numbers to cheer our boys on!!!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Here's how I see it:

1. I couldn't care less who we play. This team finished higher than I thought they would. They met what I think was the toughest possible challenge (a last-place Clarkson team with a chance to redeem a lost season) in the first round - in style. Then they went into the SLU playoff house of horrors and won again. Just watching these seniors step onto the ice in Albany will be a treat - after that, it's all gravy.

2. This Union team is the polar opposite of the old Sneddon teams. They're fast, they skate, and they're always looking to score. Kind of like us. This is going to be a fun game to watch.

3. Having been at the Union game in Schenectady, I know SLU can play with these guys. At Union, we had just come off a grueling, physical tie on the road with RPI and Union had just come off a home-ice cakewalk over Clarkson. Our guys hit the wall in the third period. That's not going to happen in Albany (and in any case it's no excuse in Albany).

4. SLU's power play is a different animal now than it was in early February.

As Mike said, this will be a home game for Union, and there's a reason they finished third and beat us twice this year. This is a tough draw, and it's possible we just match up better with Cornell. But I feel good about this game - I think it will be really entertaining, and I think we owe 'em one. I can't wait.

I know I'll be there with 3 other very loyal Saints fans. This has been a great year. This team has tons of heart and what a way for the seniors to keep going. This is the same class I got to see play in Manchester in the NCAA tourney their freshman year. Again, the Saints defy the odds of the critics. I can't wait for Friday the boys truly earned this and I hope they continue this great ride. See most of you in Albany.
