Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

The internet was screwy here yesterday, where no websites would load, but everything else was fine with it. Just another day at this awesome school;)

At this point, we should expect no game will be easy. You take whats given to you and do what you can with it. Realistically, SLU may not have had a great record with the top 4, however we played with every team and they were all close games. In the end, Union has played over 4 games, SLU has played 5, so the bye really did nothing for them. I'm certainly looking forward to the games this weekend, because back in October I absolutely didn't even give Albany a thought.

Looking forward to seeing everybody there.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I know I'll be there with 3 other very loyal Saints fans. This has been a great year. This team has tons of heart and what a way for the seniors to keep going. This is the same class I got to see play in Manchester in the NCAA tourney their freshman year. Again, the Saints defy the odds of the critics. I can't wait for Friday the boys truly earned this and I hope they continue this great ride. See most of you in Albany.

Hope you make some noise. I know we will ;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

As stated by everyone else - I am so pleased to be going to Albany. I picked the SLU to finish fourth in the pre-season pole but that was a selection of the heart - I really thought anything above tenth would be OK. This season is all about the team and the coaches who continue to recruit and rebuilt with 'under the radar' players who fit and are a constant credit to the sport the the university.
I'm fine with the matchup. I saw the game at Union - we dominated the first, played even in the second (were up 2-1 on a shortie), and gassed out in the third. Lost on a couple of defensive lapses.
Whatever the outcome this weekend - I will be proud to wear the Scarlet and Brown.

GO SAINTS

Tim - I think so - but I'm too old to remember. I will stop by and say 'hello' if I see you in Albany. Know your dad, worked with B. Cross until he retired.

I must be getting old, too (not that tha's a bad thing!). I think you've told me that before and I forgot. :o

In any case, it would be great to see you in Albany

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well Joe didn't win coach of the year but congrats to Nate Leaman of Union. He has done a great job with that team this year. That said they better be prepared this weekend. I was hoping Joe would get it based on what has happened with the boys this year compared to what was expected at the beginning of the year. They picked us 10th and we are now going to Albany for the semi's. Well it should be a fun and exciting weeked. Also, my hats off to Brown, very impressive win and if I'm Cornell I'm not feeling to comfortable with the matchup. Brown may have been the 11 seed but they just beat Yale 2 of 3 at Yale. Oh yeah, and Yale was the highest scoring offense in the country and got shut out last night. A lot of people never would of picked most of these teams to be in Albany at the beginning of the year. Preseason rankings mean nothing. GO SAINTS! You've already made us proud. Keep it up.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thanks for the info. This is pretty much how I viewed things as well. Union is no joke but I feel that if we bring our A game we should be alright. I also felt that about last year with Yale and look what happened. I don't think I can handle another deflating loss like last year to Yale.

I WILL be in Albany one way or another. Right now I am on a tight budget trying to figure out how I am going to be able to afford the hotel and tickets. But I have not missed the Saints in Albany yet and I am not about to!!!

Re, your budget, you are not alone. With the way this team keeps finding ways to win, there will likely be many SLU fans who go broke or need to sell some things in order to attend the games. In my case, should we advance to Detroit (note: you never know), my camera gear will be up for sale on eBay. It would be the most satisfying sale I've ever made.

Watched Union several times this season on local TWC and in person at Union. They are very, very good and we will have our hands full.

Friday can't come soon enough.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Does anyone know offhand, which section at the TUC has been assigned to SLU?

After last year's disappointment in Albany and the ensuing losses to graduation - didn't hold much hope to have a strong rooting interest for the ECAC swan song in Albany. Just goes to show how far experienced winners, excellent coaching, and a ton of character can carry you. Two wins away from achieving, what would have to be considered, one of the most remarkable team achievements in SLU hockey lore.

May not be the most recognized SLU team to take their shot at the Whitelaw Trophy, but love the way this team grits out wins, especially late in games.

Go Saints!

I have not purchased my tickets through Brenda yet, but I know some who have and they are in Sections 122 and 123.

You're absolutely right. But you know what? Going forward I'll bet that changes. After that heart-stopping Clarkson series, and after sweeping Colgate on the road to get to Albany, I have a feeling this group, and what they've done this month, will be remembered fondly for a very long time at SLU.

While I'm thinking of it: Hey Jim, I know you're out there reading this stuff. I hope to see you - and my old classmate Jim Junior - this weekend.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nothing but respect for SLU from this Union fan. SLU has a storied tradition and one of which to be proud. As far as Joe Marsh, I can't say enough good things about him.

One thing I might take issue with from some of the posts is that playing in Albany will essentially be a home game for Union. First, the students will be on break as of Thursday so how many of them show is an unknown. Second, the Union fan base is relatively small although this may be a novelty for local hockey fans having an area team in the Tournament. Third, the TUC is a pretty sterile environment which few teams' fans can bring to life, with the possible exception of Cornell. Finally, Albany is first and foremost a Siena basketball town (ugh), and although the NCAA regional is on early Friday, I'm guessing it will still keep a lot of casual fans at home.

In any event I am totally on edge for a great game against a worthy opponent.

Tim, you'll certainly see us both. The big guy will be there for both on Friday. I still need to work out a few logistics with the wife flying back from Kentucky on Friday; but I'm confident I can sufficiently bribe one of my high school seniors to give up a precious Friday night and do pick up duty at the airport and watch their little brother.

The SLU hockey karma must be spreading - just returned from my Monday Night Lights pick-up hockey, and netted two rare ones and hit a post to miss a hat trick. Let's hope it a good omen.

See you Friday.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I read the best quote of the new decade this morning on Facebook made by a long time SLU fan from Canton who is pretty close to the team (I'll preserve his anonymity):

"You know it's been a good year when it's 50 degrees out and you can smell the cow s#@% on the way to Appleton."

Couldn't say it any better.

I was fortunate enough to see this team play four times this year (in Omaha and Canton). I didn't expect a whole lot even after they looked pretty good in Omaha.

These guys have resilience and and, in the last five games, killer instincts. I wish I could get to Albany.

I like their chances this weekend --which is different from '09 and '07 when I flat out expected them us to win. Union and Cornell are tough and Brown is the curse. No easy games -- but let's remember we are 2-2-1 against the top 10 of this morning's poll. We can play with anybody. We just can't come out flat.

I'm glad we are on at 7pm because in '07 we played at 4pm and I thought it affected us. We came out flat and never got in the game. Last year was a heart breaker. This year we have nothing to lose which might be just the ticket.

Also worth noting amidst all this, that whatever happens in Albany, Joe Marsh will finish up this year with his 15th winning season. With 455 wins (so far) he moves to number 23 on the all time win list (he jumps Bill Wilkinson this year) and is the #8 winning-est active D1 coach --- in some pretty elevated company, every single coach ahead of him on that list having had far more resources at their disposal than he did and does.

What a good year!

Now, just six more wins and.......

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

All I know is that last year I fear I used all my lock getting a warning instead of a speeding ticket on the way to Albany. This year, I will be driving the speed limit!!!:D

What these guys take to Albany is the memory of two stinging losses in the semi-finals that I hope will serve a useful purpose besides making me want to vomit of reminding the guys that the RS, the predictions, the standings mean absolutely nothing. It is 60 minutes of hockey (or more) and the team that can stay out of the box, keep it simple, possess the puck and creating scoring chances and finish that will win. I just hope that 2007 and 2009 remind these guys of what it takes. Unlike prior trips, an NCAA bid will not happen unless we win it all. Every game is do or die....and I think that might help us.

Still thankful that it didn't go to 3 at Colgate. We needed that one less game and the rest.

Congrats to Leaman on COTY. He is a worthy winner. Union had a great season. Still, I wouldn't trade Marsh for Leaman in a million years.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

For all the great SLU hockey fans who don't get the St. Lawrence Plaindealer I want to post Bob Prier's letter to the editor in this week's edition:

Saints Supporters
To The Editor:
Thank you to those of you who made the trip to Colgate this past weekend. The overwhelming support for the St. Lawrence Hockey Team did not go unnoticed, the players and coaches are fortunate to have so many good people rooting for them. It is not very often that the road team has more fans than the home team in the playoffs, you made a difference. Thank you.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Apparently being a college student pays come income tax time. Something I probably should have already known, but overlooked for some reason. Well today I brought my 1098T form from my student loans with me to file my income taxes and came back with an extra $1500 on my return. That's more than enough to cover the rapid refund loan and get my money here on time to make this weekend in Albany affordable! Now I am even more excited for this weekend because I don't have to sell any of my belongings to make it to Albany (as Muskieman suggested ;) ).
