Best of luck to Brandon at the next level. This one is a surprise, but I hope everything works out for him.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Okay, it is making more sense to me. Heard Bollig signed a 2-year deal with the Blackhawks (2 way deal I am sure), and the ATO is just to finish out this season. That makes me feel a lot better than a kid is not just gambling on a tryout!

That sure does make a lot more sense. To give up SLU for just an ATO sure didn't seem too logical.

As for cracking the Blackhawks line up...........my understanding (as limited as it might be) is that the Blackhawks team you see this year is the one built to win the cup (goaltending issue not withstanding). It is common knowledge that next year their team will have an entirely different look as with the big contracts they gave their premiere forwards and defensemen they will have major salary cap issues next year. I have heard that really good players like a Versteeg or maybe even a Sharp might have to play elsewhere because of the cap issues they will have.
I have also heard discussed on the radio that the Hawks need some more toughness........so perhaps Brandon is one of a crop of potential "tough" guys signed to protect the Kanes and Toews of the world.
It seems the NHL model now (with the salary cap) is to lock up a "core" of your talented players and then fill in the rest of the roster with complimentary players.......so my guess is that Brandon will be one of several Hawk signees and players who are signed to see if they can make it to the NHL at some future point to provide that protection and toughness.

I'm sure glad to hear he left for a contract and not just that ATO.

Here is the official Black Hawk news..........and hey, besides the SLU home white uniform......who has a better uni than the Hawks or Leafs?????

Blackhawks Ink Forward Brandon BolligSaturday, 04.03.2010 / 11:40 AM / News By Chicago Blackhawks
Brandon Bollig
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Brandon Bollig to a two-year entry-level contract, which begins at the start of the 2010-11 season.

Bollig, 23, ranked fourth on St. Lawrence University (ECAC) with 25 points and tied for fourth with 18 assists while appearing in all 42 games during his sophomore campaign. The St. Charles, Missouri, native led the squad with 83 penalty minutes and finished sixth with seven goals. Bollig has appeared in 78 of St. Lawrence’s 80 games over the past two seasons, collecting 38 points (13G, 25A) and 134 penalty minutes. He was named the co-winner of the team’s Rookie of the Year Award after his freshman year in 2008-09.

Prior to St. Lawrence, Bollig racked up 73 points (37G, 36A) and 593 penalty minutes in 173 regular-season games spanning three seasons with the United States Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars (2005-08).

In the USHL, Bollig was a typical tough guy, not sure he had much skill (I saw him play many times in person). He did prove that he has some skill by putting up numbers in the college game. But as with most tough guys, I am sure once this Blackhawk organization opportunity presented itself, he was better suited to move on versus play the more tame college game. This is a good move for him and he might even make it...because he does have some hockey skills.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Some good news on the recent (or soon to be) alumni front:

Derek Keller did not have to wait as long as he did as a Saint to score a goal. He scored tonight for South Carolina.

Mike McKenzie in his first game had an assist for Albany.

Kevin DeVirgilio also got called up from Idaho to Texas (AHL) today.

All good news!:D :D :D

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Any SLU fan who was alive in the Spring of 1988 needs to read this post, the first paragraph in particular. It'll give you a good laugh. Or cry.

Oh the irony, and how soon they forget. That M***** ref pulled the ring off the Saint fingers in 1988 and put it right on LSSU. They are right though, literally one of the worst refs ever.

I got a bench minor (offset by a Doug Woog bench minor) in 1990 Maine Tourney for saying to him "I see you still have your head stuck up your *****"!!

I do recall that Clarkson - LSSU series though....the refs required a police escort out of town. It was that bad. As I recall, Clarkson barely beat SLU in Boston for the ECAC that year.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

OUCH!!!!!

Well, I guess we will never see Dustin Stevenson in an SLU Uniform. He just signed a 3 year contract with Washington! That really freakin' hurts!!!

Ok, this is the second bad thing to happen in the past week. Bad things come in threes. God, just please get it over with now so we can move on?

That does really suck, he probably would have been a very good addition to the defensive corps based on size alone. Ah well, let's hope Joe and the gang can find another late diamond in the rough to fill the void.

I think LSSU goalie Bruce Hoffort had a lot more to do with the outcome of the 1988 game than the ref.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Wow, "Ouch" is right .
On the bright side, 1) we clearly are recruiting and attracting the right players when Caps intercept a guy like this. And...2)better he never make it here than play a year and jump.
Hopefully this makes room for a kid that joe and co. are really excited about - and a kid that is really excited about pulling on an SLU sweater.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I think LSSU goalie Bruce Hoffort had a lot more to do with the outcome of the 1988 game than the ref.

They were equal partners. Hoffort was incredible for the whole game, but the referee blew a key call at a crucial time. He failed to penalize LSSU for intentionally knocking off the net to prevent an SLU goal at the end of regulation. Even the SI recap of the game mentioned the officiating, saying that SLU should have been awarded a goal or a penalty shot on that play. There were a couple of other non-calls in the third that were big as well.

But Hoffort certainly did his part. Goaltending at both ends was the main story of the game. And my real point was just that it seems funny to SLU fans that a Lake Superior fan would express frustration that officiating cost his team a game in the '88 tournament, given the way we feel about the championship.

Tim is right. If Cole called that game correctly, we would have won in spite of Hoffort's performance. Not to mention the puck he caught with his glove behind the goal line.
