Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

It's official: Congrats to Mike McKenzie for signing an ATO with Albany. Hopefully he can flourish at the next level and continue his successful career so far.

Congrats to Mike (and his hockey dad)! Some reward having to play in Albany, the building that has been oh so good:mad: to us Saint fans, but he can take solace in the fact that if he sticks there he can be playing in North Carolina next season!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Congratulations to the guy that never gets outworked - Alex Curran - who has signed an ATO with Syracuse. If both play tomorrow his first game will be against his old linemate - Mike McKenzie.

Congrats to one of my favorite players for SLU. Lots of hustle, lots of work, and a great (quiet) leader!

EDIT: Correction, Curran is in the lineup tonight for Syracuse. Hopefully, Mike will play tomorrow. Fight tonight for Genny. Shoot Out win for McKenna tonight who stopped 8 of 11 in the Shoot Out including one on Beca.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

For those interested..........our ECAC Tournament in Albany outdrew the NCAA regional tonight in Albany.

There were only a little over 4,000 fans in attendance with Cornell (who draws well)....another upstate NY team in RIT, New Hampshire which isn't an insurmountable distance away with Denver being the only team from afar. Cornell posters said for whatever reason there were "less" Cornell fans there tonight than last weekend. It would also appear there was no "local" turnout of any numbers so it seems like it was a long time ago that the place was packed for BU/SLU. What's happened to college hockey attendance????

With the River Rats leaving for Carolina, the ECAC tourney leaving and a very poor turnout at the regionals tonight one would assume that the TUC is toast for hockey.

I suppose it is ironic torture that the McKenzies are all going to be trudging back to the place that most of us have learned to hate. Well look on the bright side....at least they know how to get there!!!

One question for those in the know. With all these players signing ATO's....what happens to their school work/degree's???? Do they still graduate or do they have to go back to make up the work?? I always wondered about that.

Shocking!! I'd love to go watch another Cornell game but I ran out of red bull and had no way of staying awake. The RIT game was entertaining and SHOCKING, but UNH literally skated circles around Cornell. For one thing, it started too early. For another, the economy absolutely sucks. And lastly, perhaps, Albany has a well-deserved reputation by now. The Verizon was pretty full in Manchester last year. For its part it did look like RIT had a decent showing attendance-wise. The regionals are tricky too. You basically have 4-5 days to book your travel and get there. It is not like the Frozen Four where you know where it is going to be and you can buy your tickets and hope your team makes it. Denver could have just as easily ended up in Minneapolis or Ft. Wayne. The early game in Minneapolis look half full too. The same year that SLU played BU to a full hourse, I watched BC-Michigan State and UND (I think) and Niagara play at Mariucci in front of less than 400 fans for the first game. It had all the atmosphere of a game at Meehan.

I suppose it is ironic torture that the McKenzies are all going to be trudging back to the place that most of us have learned to hate. Well look on the bright side....at least they know how to get there!!!.

That is cruel irony! I sent Mike a facebook note today and asked him to prove that place doesn't have a real curse. I don't like anything about Albany except it is better than Atlantic City! Seriously, Lake Placid was way more successful than Albany ever was. I really think the trick is getting the tourney near the alumna bases of the ECAC schools which is Boston and New York. We have gone a long way in the wrong direction from a sold-out Boston Garden for a 1988 final between SLU - Clarkson to this. I wish the McKenzies some good memories from the TUC before the team moves to Carolina. I think Albany has the regionals in two years again too. Even Bridgeport is better. There are so many better places!

Different answer for everyone. Some have the credits already. Some can finish their courses while playing and graduate. Some might be back at Summer School or take incompletes and finish over the summer. I think it is mostly the first two scenarios. Everyone from my era that left early graduated or got their degree, and academically this new breed is definitely stronger than 20 years ago!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Congratulations to all the guys now playing at the next level. Nothing that anybody in this senior class goes on to accomplish, whether it be on the ice or elsewhere, will surprise me. Best of luck to all of you.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I remember several of us talking about it, but I don't believe I've seen anything since.

The NCAA DVD archive has now included the 1988 championship game! It's $24.99, which I would assume is well worth the cost to have a copy of this thriller (even though we all know what might have been).

Also, on another note, take the 5 minutes or however long to go read this thread:

Just an absolutely awesome, great post.

Thank you HP1015....I have been waiting for this to come available for quite some time now :)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I am sure my mood will change after I watch the video, but I haven't been able to find even as much as a highlight of it until now :(

Just take a minute before you hit the Play button. Contemplate the fact that you're about to leave behind the pre-1988-National-Championship-game-viewing phase of your life.

Remember: once you've seen it, it can never be unseen.

Great now I'm overcome with joy and rapture ;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Lots of April Fools jokes out there today (Topeka, anyone?), but the "scariest" came into my inbox from the Hoot--to wit, a name change to JOESLUCLARKSONGEEK.COM--and allowing Clarkson alums to access the site!
One good thing: they're gonna add an "adult" area to their merchandise department, specifically for their new members, pun intended.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Looks like Bollig is gone. According to theahl.com, he signed an ATO with Rockford. I am pretty sure, he can't do that and retain eligibility of any kind.

That s_cks and is certainly going to leave a big hole in the line up for next year. Not the kind of news we want to be hearing. His stay was too short and his toughness and his parking spot in front of the net will need to be replaced.

04/02/2010 9:50 AM - Pair added to IceHogs roster

Rockford, Ill.- Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced on Friday that forward Brandon Bollig and defenseman Ryan Stanton were signed to an ATO with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

Bollig, 23, recently completed his sophomore season at St. Lawrence University (NCAA). The 6-3, 215-pound forward ranked fourth on the Saints with 25 points and led the club with 104 penalty minutes.

Prior to skating in St. Lawrence, Bollig spent three years with the Lincoln Stars (USHL). Bollig appeared in 158 career games with the Stars, netting 37g-36a and racking up 593 PIMs.

Stanton, 20, signed a three-year entry level contract with the Blackhawks on March 12. The undrafted defenseman played the last four seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) and increased his production each season in Moose Jaw.

The St. Albert, ALB native led all Warriors defenseman with 40 points in 2009-10 and chipped in six assists in seven postseason games. Stanton set junior career marks with 10 goals and 30 assists as well this season.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Wow! Hate to see him go. This kind of reminds me a little of when Gusto left. For any talented athlete it must be tough to ignore the lure of the pros. Hopefully SLU can find a new physical presence out front to fill his shoes. Best of luck in the pros Brandon.

Yeah, it is lame. I sure thought it was possible but ill-advised. He really needed another year or two in a development league where he could get a lot of ice time and be a star. I don't consider the AHL that type of league and it is only an ATO. I sure wouldn't give up a $55K per year scholarship for that...I would want something a lot more substantial. At least Gusty got about a $750K signing bonus.

Understand that Vangog was maybe 2011 but not is definitely a 2010. And the toughness of Bollig is replaced by Dustin Stevenson who is a big kid and was the SJHL Player of the Year.

I wish Bollig well. Cracking into the Blackhawks lineup....good luck with that!! I wish he would have played at SLU at least one more year, but C'est la vie. I guess on the bright side, there is 52 minors we don't have to try to kill next year.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Okay, it is making more sense to me. Heard Bollig signed a 2-year deal with the Blackhawks (2 way deal I am sure), and the ATO is just to finish out this season. That makes me feel a lot better than a kid is not just gambling on a tryout!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

FYI on SLU Recruit:

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

SJHL Player Of The Year
Dustin Stevenson, La Ronge Ice Wolves
1989 D Dustin Stevenson (Gull Lake SK) is the SJHL nominee for the CJHL Player Of The Year after a season in which he delivered 11-goals and 36-assists in 56-games while anchoring the Ice Wolves defense corps. Stevenson uses his 6’5” 220 lbs frame to play a Chris Pronger style of game and can dominate with his incredible gifted mix of size, strength, speed, and offensive instincts. The La Ronge captain is headed to St. Lawrence (NCAA Div I) this September.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Bodnarchuk, Humboldt Broncos
