Scores and Highlights 09-10

Re: Scores and Highlights 09-10

So as long as its endearing its OK? Endearing or not it is a racially loaded word.

Here's an idea....give us your background and instead of Bergey we'll all use a racially loaded word for you and it will be OK because it is used endearingly. How would that work for you?

The Prof

Prof,

Why don't you take all that politically correct crap on over to Nancy Pelosi's office and dump it in the S.F. Bay, then travel north to oh, say Alaska and find a real "LIFE." Maybe you can go hunting and trapping with Sara! Meanwhile, leave Bergey alone! Bergs loves Sully and would never throw any smut. I suppose you think we should let all the terrorists fly any plane they want without being "Profiled" too! Huh, gimme a break!

Contrary to your thoughts on this Chippy it has nothing to do with political correctness. I hate it as much as anyone else but does that give you or me the right to use racially loaded terms for people? As to SF Bay, far too "Left Coast" for me so you won't find me there anytime soon.

Ah good olde Sarah. I have been in Wasilla, just this year as a matter of fact, and despite what she says you cannot see Russia from anywhere near it. Just what can she see from her house would be the question all of you might want to ask cause it sure isn't the big picture.

As for Bergy, well his level of ignorance is not as high as yours since you seem to think it is OK to use racially sensitive terms on a forum about college sports. As for the terrorists, I'd let them fly a plane that I had prepared for them with enough fuel to get over the ocean....., so yeah I believe in profiling. So much so that I'd let you get on it too.

Peace out.

If you think it is ignorant to refer to a female as "him" then add yourself to the ignorance list Prof.

Pretty much figured that out. To paraphrase from Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, she generally sounds as if she's having flashbacks from an old acid trip.

I think you can go right on eating. Have you tried Klondike Bars -- the dark chocolate's great.

From WIKI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eskimo
Origin of the name Eskimo

Two principal competing etymologies have been proposed for the name "Eskimo", but the most commonly accepted today appears to be the Montagnais word meaning "snowshoe-netter". The word assime·w means "she laces a snowshoe" in Montagnais. Since Montagnais speakers refer to the neighbouring Mi'kmaq people using words that sound very much like eskimo, Ives Goddard of the Smithsonian Institution has concluded that this is the more likely origin of the word.

Jose Mailhot, a Quebec anthropologist who speaks Montagnais, however, published a paper in 1978 which suggested that the meaning is "people who speak a different language".

Folklore has it that speakers of some Algonkian languages coined the term Eskimo to mean "eaters of raw meat". Linguistic research by anthropologists does not support that etymology, and the majority of academic linguists hold the non-pejorative view of Eskimo, but it is nevertheless commonly felt in Canada and Greenland that the term Eskimo is pejorative.

The Inuit Circumpolar Conference meeting in Barrow, Alaska, officially adopted "Inuit" as a designation for all Eskimos, regardless of their local usages, in 1977[citation needed]. However, the Inuit Circumpolar Council, as it is known today, uses both "Inuit" and "Eskimo" in its official documents.

Indeed, if you had paid attention about a year ago there was even photographic evidence of this !.

Bergey is a well known long time NU booster and Sulyma Fan !.

P.S...The only Eskimo's I know are the ones with the Green and Yellow Motif that run up and down the field with helmets on at Commonwealth Stadium. The most famous one has a last name Moon and went from one Oiler town to another Oiler town. The irony there is that he was a barrier and stigma breaker in the new town he went to.

The problem is she never said you could see Russia from her house in Wasilla. Here is her exact quote from her interview with Charlie Gibson:

"They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."
(which is a true statement by the way)

Sounds good.

I'm a Mick (Paddy, Bog Trotter, Potato Eater, Donkey, Drunk...take yer pick) and a Beaver Beater (Frozen Frog, Poutine, Queeb...again take yer pick) with a dash of Guido and Limey.

Go ahead...make my day. Be endearing.

You need to chill out. Sulyma herself loved a sign the Litterbox made poking fun at her ESKIMO/INUIT background.

Nice.

This reminds me of the common belief that the word "jimmies," often used in New England, was a racial slur stemming from "Jim Crow."

In reality, jimmies (not sprinkles) owe their name to the man who ran the machine that made 'em at the Just Born candy company; alleged to be Jimmy Bartholomew.

Re: Scores and Highlights 09-10

Hey Prof,

I'm a "CRACKER" and darn proud of it !!!

The problem with all that politically correct crap is that it's too darn distracting from the REAL issues of life in general. I suppose that if one took a poll (hahaha there's polls for everything nowdays) and politically corrected away (new verb just made up) everyones gripes, we would all be left with a pretty small vocabulary. I guess we could all just stand around and look at each other, except there would for sure be someone who was offended by claims of others leering at them!!! As I said,...get a life!!!

Can't disagree with your views on polls and on political correctness but there are better words to describe people than racially charged ones. As to getting a life thanks for your concern but I've already got one. How's yours going?

I agree 100% with you Prof. It's about time that somebody took a stand against racial insensitivity.

And while we're on the subject, I'd like to see another wrong get corrected. Posters on this thread, as well as the general public, continually refer to the mascot of Northeastern University as a husky. This has to stop. It is a SIBERIAN Husky. Omitting the name of its ancestry is stripping it of its origin and racial pride. You don't hear anybody referring to a German Shepherd as a shepherd, or a Scottish Deerhound as a deerhound, do you? Or even an Irish Wolfhound as a wolfhound. Why is the Siberian Husky relegated to a second-class citizen? It should be called by its full and legal name. It's a known fact that the term "husky" is a derogatory term originated by the Alaskan Malamutes to describe the Siberian Husky, and that the term "husky" actually refers to a canine-quadraped that "drinks from toilets". In fact, the insulting use of this word has actually expanded to include other athletic mascots, such as the University of Nebraska Cornhuskies. When will it end?

It's good to see that the PC, and I don't mean the Friars, that is killing this country hasn't escaped the good 'ol USCHO threads.

Now, now D2D, don't go providing facts to disparage the information that the media opted to report on, when trashing Mrs Palin. You might have people thinking that she is smarter than the media and some people would like us to believe.:D

There is little that riles me more than going to an ice cream shop and asking for Jimmies on my cone, only to be asked by some dim wit behind the counter "Do you want chocolate or colored?"

Ah, hello. Jimmies are chocolate. Sprinkles are colored.

Here is an excerpt from a recent article in my hometown paper, The Anchorage Daily News, that may shed light on the topic:

Attack on Native draws hate-crime charges

ASSAULT: Pair re-arrested, may face 10 years in prison.

Police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said at the time that the couple pelted the Alaska Native man with bottles and eggs. They pushed and kicked him, all while taunting him with racial slurs, Parker said.

"I hate you Eskimos," one of the attackers said, according to the state charges. Mocking a Native accent, they pretended to ask for a cheap brand of vodka.
