Scores and Highlights 09-10

Re: Scores and Highlights 09-10

Yeah, I've noticed the weather is weird in the GTA.

I once drove across Massachusetts and New York after a pretty good snow storm, only to reach the QEW & 407 to find not a lick of snow on the ground. It stayed that way on the 400 until Cookstown, and then wham, everything was plastered. I got to Barrie and had to spend nearly an hour digging out a spot for my truck in my friend's driveway.

It is amazing the difference in weather in even relatively small changes of location.

Sure is! I drove the 40 miles south to work this morning, leaving 27° F, 6 inches of snow topped with ice, and arrived to 40°F and green grass!

Re: Scores and Highlights 09-10

Hux,

That's the joys of lake effect snow. Buffalo and Watertown get the same kind of snow as Barrie gets. Toronto is on the right side of the lake till late winter/early spring and then they get the lake effect snow because the wind has changed to coming from the south!

Trillum forgets the good olde days of Mel Lastman and getting the army in to dig the city out. We in the 'north' had a few good laughs over that.

Will the Brown threads die? I hope so but you have to think that where there's smoke there is usually fire, is there not?

The Prof.

Us NON-GTA Ontarians still chuckle at that Army rescue attempt everytime Torontonians complain about a couple of inches of snow. Right now the GTA is green while the northern and eastern parts of the province have a nice cover of fresh snow.

Actually, I remember it well. As I recall, there wasn't actually all that much snow compared to what other municipalities in Ontario get, but the problem is that because Toronto doesn't typically get much, it also does not have nearly the number of snowplows available to deal with it that other municipalities have. Add to that the fact that in the central part of the city most homes don't have driveways and rely on street parking, leaving only one lane for through traffic. So with not enough plows or snowmelters to remove snow quickly, nowhere to plow it to, and having to navigate around parked cars while dealing with it, the streets can get plugged up in a hurry if there is a major snow dump--leaving people stranded.

And here I thought Canadians got skates for their first birthday and shovels for their second (to clear the ice for hockey, of course:)

You are correct for the most part. Toronto and Vancouver are exceptions to that rule. .....Although as we speak Vancouver is supposed to get 20cm of snow in the next day or so, very unusual there.

....and by the age of four we are capable of locating and plugging in a block heater cord!

Brrrrr...did I mention it is -31 out here!

Perhaps thats why such a large percentage of the country's population lives in Toronto and Vancouver--actually 22.5%, I just looked it up! :p

Actually, if you hate snow and cold, the best weather in the country by a mile belongs to Victoria where it is relatively balmy year round. Mmm, no wonder UVic and UBC are becoming popular destinations for grads from my daughter's school.

Well at least you get chinooks. I remember going out to Calgary in February once on business for a couple of days at it was > 20 degrees C (translation: >70 degrees F) . It was actually warmer than in LA, where I was next headed.

Funny you should mention..forecast calls for a Chinook to roll in tonight and temperatures around 0 to + 1C :) tommorow. The "Snow Eater" will be around for at least 4 or 5 days then on to more seasonal temps of -10C through the holiday season. That is if you can beleive the weather forecasters....

Weather forecasting is a job you can get paid a lot of money to do incorrectly. (did that come out the way I meant it?)

A WCHA team gets back into action with tonight's game between North Dakota and Union, but unfortunately Union's live stats aren't working... They still have all the data from the Union vs. Maine game in the system. :(

I wonder if Union College is using student interns for their live stats and they're on break, too, because they never got the live stats going. At any rate, here are the results of today's two non-conference matchups...

Union 3, North Dakota 1 - FINAL - Alana Marcinko gets her second win of the season for the Dutchwomen with a 34-save effort. Based on shots, UND outplayed Union in the 3rd but couldn't light the lamp.

Also... Northeastern 3, Yale 0 - FINAL. Leah Sulyma gets her second start of the season, her second win, and the 32-save shutout for Huskies.

GO UNION. Messed up my picks, but way to go, just the same
