RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

Several years ago our women's team received a commitment from Sophie Helgeson, a defender rated 4.25 *'s by Neutral Zone. She decommitted and went to Wisconsin. Now, she is transferring to RPI for her senior season. Does anyone know a similar situation for any men's teams?

I will bet that a fair number of transfers from the portal had been previously recruited by their new school. However, I can't remember any other examples, male or female, where a player committed, decommitted and then transfered to that school.

Helgeson's case is fairly unique in that she was not only offered by Wisconsin, a traditional powerhouse that went on to win another national championship with her in the lineup (albeit a third pair defender), but her father also played for a Badgers hockey national champion about 30 years ago and her mother was on the track team. As much as I dislike decommitments, this one was understandable. I'm impressed that both sides still recognized the benefits of getting together for a grad school year. She'll get more ice time and an MBA and we get an player experienced at the highest level.

I agree that many portal transfers probably were previously recruited by their new team.

I wonder of the 10/5 exhibition game could not be scheduled.

IIRC, last year season ticket holders were given free tickets for the exhibition game and their seats were blocked off from the general public. I don’t think their opponent was ever listed on the tickets. We’ll see what happens this year.

In honor of Andrea Trnkova, today is 8 July 2024. There are 89 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 5 October 2024 for the start of next season.

Reed Lebster was committed to Michigan State, deco'd and went to play for UMASS for 4 seasons, and then did his bonus COVID season with MSU this past season. UMASS AC added to an entirely re-configured MSU coaching staff was arguably the main draw in his return (and the previous crappy regime was likely a determining factor in his original decommitment).

I hope he got an NIL deal with Red Lobster.

can you imagine the possibilities for NIL if it existed when Bear Trapp played???

Two questions as my mind wanders:
1) If they put the RPI 200 logo at center ice as shown how would they work the face-off dot into it?
2) Why is the Engineers Pride membership not inclusive of the Freakout?

1) The face-off dot will be placed where it normally is and according to regulations, regardless of the impact on surrounding designs. I suspect that this may unsettle those who are detail-oriented about the presentation of logos.

2) I am guessing the Engineers Pride private space will be needed to entertain alumni and returning players on that weekend, and there is not sufficient other space to relocate given the level of attendance regularly pushes into sellout territory.

Sadly, in today's world of people with not enough to do (like work) and with too much time on their hands, who instead focus their energies on being offended by almost anything every single time, he could not have been called Bear Trapp. Certainly someone, somewhere would eventually be offended by this "insult" to aboriginal people. He would have had to settle for his given name of Douglas Bear Trapp. Bear was actually his middle name and it was a derivative of his grandfather's name Barry (a long time NHL executive) and his father's middle name Blair (a Calder Cup winner who was also named Douglas).

In reality, Doug (from Saskatchewan) is no more Native anything than Italian American Joe Scarpa (Chief Jay Strongbow) was. Fortunately for the "Chief", he was able to stumble on the gimmick that drew a lot of money his way for a long time (to near 50) before far too many took up being offended by near everything everytime. Even if it was hilarious and entertaining.

Bear could have never cashed in like that in his time. By then, no company would have touched his "gimmick" with the cables that once spanned ocean floors. Instead, they would have been running toward the tall timber with their tails tucked between their legs.

The more pertinent question about #2 is why would anyone with a functional mind pay a $300 membership ($25 more than the season ticket itself) and do it months in advance for a "benefit" you can't use on the one night of the year you need it most. That is the one night of a season that you can't get anywhere near the concession stand (believe there is only one) unless you want to stand in a long line for a long time and miss a good chunk of a period.

Better idea is to just keep the $300 in your pocket and let them keep their finger food, snacks, popcorn and refreshments for that one night and the other 15 home dates too. For those other 15 dates you will do far better just spending the $300 you kept on a game by game basis at the one concession stand. You would have to average $20 of concessions for all 15 of the other games just to reach the $300 they want in advance for the membership. One member (or should I say likely former member) spending that much on concessions per game 15 times seems highly unlikely. In fact, I seriously doubt I ever reached that amount even once in the well over the half century I have been attending.

No, it is not overly difficult or time consuming to use the 3 or 4 line concession stand on anything even resembling a normal night. At least not after the two year fan ban. For the two seasons since, the average per game attendance (including Freakout) has been 2,225 and 2,251.

Conclusion: This one is right out of basic money management 101. The Pride membership has no financial tangible value of any kind. Keep your money!!!

I think most people that participate in these things realize that this is a way for the hockey program to raise funds while offering some modest benefit in exchange for the contribution. So that is factored into the "value" calculation they are making when they sign up.

I don't participate because I usually eat before or after a game, but it's hard to imagine the spread being any worse that HFH's very basic concession stand.

Jenny and I cannot comment about the concession at HFH. For all the years we attended virtually every home game we stuck to the same routine. Dinner at Verdiles (with several drinks of course) and then stopping at Bella Napoli to pick up not only dessert for us but usually cookies and cake for most of our row K in section 6. In those days we also would bring a little libation to the game in a small flask. i can't remember ever buyin g anything to eat or drink at the concession - but after a number of drinks I might have and simply do not remember.
