RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

RPI's lacrosse team came up big this afternoon in their first game in the NCAA tournament, dominating St. Mary's of Maryland, 15-5. They will move on to play Bowdoin tomorrow in the round of 16.

If they win that one, they will have a quarterfinal game next weekend against the winner of Dickinson vs. Middlebury. Dickinson will be the home team and will probably be a solid favorite.

Both RPI and Dickinson have their commencement ceremonies scheduled next weekend, RPI's on Saturday and Dickinson's on Sunday. Both RPI's and Dickinson's lacrosse teams play their home games on the same field as their football teams; however, unlike RPI, Dickinson does not hold commencement on that field. I have to wonder whether the home field advantage next weekend will be awarded on the basis of whose field is more readily available for a lacrosse game.

UAlbany’s field will probably be available. I’m sure something can be worked out.

As it happened, nothing of that nature has to be worked out, at least not in Troy or Carlisle. Bowdoin beat RPI and Middlebury beat Dickinson.

I guess the NCAA has to decide whether it'll be better for those two to meet in Middlebury, Vermont or Brunswick, Maine.

It's actually at RIT because the quarters and the semis occur the same weekend so the D-III title game can be contested on Sunday as part of the big championship weekend between the DI semis on Saturday and championship game on Memorial Day.

Congrats to Seth Appert, named an AC on Lindy Ruff's staff in Buffalo. Well earned by Coach, both for the on-ice success in Rochester and having coached and worked with many of the younger players and prospects in the Sabres org.

That makes perfect sense. If Buffalo is going to succeed it will be with young players. Lindy Ruff is not the young guy that he was when he first became Sabres head coach more than 20 years ago. In fact, he must be close to the oldest coach in the league. He's also been away from the organization for at least a decade. In Seth he gets a younger guy that undoubtedly knows all of the top prospects in the organization - both in Buffalo and Rochester - inside out. It's also probably Seth's best chance to be an NHL coach. With the number of coaches that get recycled around the league (like Ruff), it's hard to break in to your first HC job. However, if they have success he'd be a logical candidate to replace a guy that will probably be sailing into retirement in a few years.

Great analysis. Congrats to Seth and family!
