RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

Today is 9 May 2024. There are 149 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 5 October 2024 for the start of next season.

10 rounds in USHL draft and no RPI prospects picked. To quote, Engineers, lol

The USHL draft which went 10 rounds was the Phase 1 or Futures draft. It was only for players born in 2008. We don't have any known prospects born in 2008, so obviously none were drafted. We could have had known prospects drafted in the Phase 2 draft which went 24 rounds, but indeed we didn't.

If things couldn’t get any more bizarre with RPI hockey rumors are women’s assistant coach Ben Murphy heading to Dartmouth joining Reid Cashman’s staff. I guess we didn’t need him on the mens side? We have better assistants on the women’s side then men’s side apparently lol

To me this all reeks of issues in the department as a whole.

Do you take some sort of perverse pleasure from constant negativity? Murphy was fired from Bentley (where he'd been for 11 years over 2 undistinguished stints) when they cleaned house last year. He couldn't find another men's position so he took a late appointment for what was clearly in his mind a temporary gig with our women's team. He's now going to be a third assistant at Dartmouth, hardly a powerhouse appointment. He may be a decent coach - I think our women's team definitely improved this year - but his moving on to Hanover really says nothing, positively or negatively, about our men's program, women's program or the athletic department as a whole.

On the men’s side, David Quinn and Dave Hakstol recently became available. Perhaps one of those two could be hired to turn the RPi program around.

What is the point of these posts? Like it or not, we clearly are not changing coaches for next season, much less luring former NHL coaches that also had success at some of the biggest college programs to Troy. Why not really shoot for the moon? I half expect someone to say "Well, Scotty Bowman isn't dead yet - let's get him."

Edit: It may be that 25+ years was being sarcastic and I just missed it.......

No pleasure just not a enabler. Clearly you don’t know what you’re talking about regarding Murphy. He’s a very good recruiter who consistently had good recruits come to Bentley of all places. He also won a ecac title I believe at st Lawrence. Anyone who’s been following college hockey knows Dartmouth is on the rise lead by an excellent coach in Reid Cashman. Cashman would not bring on Murphy if he was not a good coach. Minimizing Murphy shows you have no idea what you’re talking about. I think the athletic department is doing a great job with success across most programs. Until thing’s change with hockey it’s going to be negative. If you can’t handle that that’s your problem not the people who post on this forum. I think we could have used Murphy on the mens side.

A half dead Scotty Bowman would be the better option. Haha

Yeah, you are an expert. The ECAC title he won at St. Lawrence was in the 4 team Covid year when they had a 4-8-2 regular season record but won the tiny 2 game playoff tournament in an upset. The overall record at Bentley over his 11 years was 41 games under .500 in Atlantic Hockey so the recruits must have been amazing. IF he was truly the coach we should be embarrassed to have lost then he wouldn't have gone without a men's job last season and wouldn't have been a pretty late add as a third coach this year. However, the amazing thing to me is that you seem to think your repetitive whining is either funny or incisive. It's neither.

Even worse. So bad.

My previous post suggesting Quinn or Halstol be the RPI coach was indeed sarcasm. As to Scotty Bowman, I just saw an interview with him at a youth hockey showcase in his name in Buffalo. 89 and sharp as a tack. Watching the Bruins- Florida series. Monty might be available too in a few days.

As fans of the game we love, under the umbrella of the School we support, the coach player relationship has always been and will continue to be an interesting dynamic.

Personally, the only reason I consider this bad is because we do not have any really young commitments. The only 2006 is Carter Matthews and none younger. IMO besides for him and the two recruits playing for Merritt which is switching to a lower league, none were likely to go to the USHL if drafted, and they may already know where they are going.
