Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

As for a thread title, I'm aiming for a record length title:

RPI 2010-2011 Off-Season Thread III -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '14

I'll probably earn another facepalm from RC :D, but the thread title is too long to fit. The 2011 part seems wrong anyway. It would have to be:

RPI 2010 Off-Season III -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '14

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

For the longest time I have been upset by the fact that our coaching does not seem to adapt well to in game changes made by the opposition. (at least for the past 15 years!) I would just love for us to be able to adapt our game between periods as well as someone like Joe Marsh at SLU. We often seem to be in control for the first 20 minutes or so and then face a team that made some adjustments between periods and we lose whatever edge we had. It does appear that this year we will have players who are flexible enough to make those adjustments on the fly.

I agree wholeheartedly, Doc. While I'm a rookie to RPI 'fan-dom', I'll go a step further and suggest that SA has the potential (once he's comfortable with his stable...this year perhaps?!) to become one of those rare coaches that isn't afraid to 'razzle dazzle' an opponent, rather than react to them . I actually see him being the one that creates the adjustments and his counterpart will have to adjust...just my 2 cents...

I like your 2 cents:). I have been around long enough to see lots of RPI coaches and have high hopes for SA. He seems like he is very willing to take the risks necessary to be innovative. I think of hockey as a fluid game with all sorts of momentum changes. I think the most successful teams are those that can alter their game depending on the situation and make the changes during the game to counteract anything that is thrown at them. I think it would be great if were just not that predictable.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

we already had revenge of the Seth

how about RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread III: The Institute Strikes Back!
or maybe save it for the season

We will have at least 2 solid scoring lines so the opponents can't shut one down like the past years. Power play looks good - checking line is the priority. You need to shut down the opponents top scoring threats. Malchuck of course: he seems like the Sadeghpour of 2011 regular line pp and pk. Put him with some size and speed maybe Burgdoerfer AAG Watts
I would also like to see Seth play the frosh for experience over some upper classmen not producing or living up to hype.

It could also be argued that in some games we've lost, the team stopped playing with the same edge and energy that they started the game with. I'd guess its a 50-50 split between not having that killer instinct that great teams have as well as being conditioned enough to continue the uptempo game into the 3rd P. (As has been reported here, the boys are addressing conditioning element this week in the 90+ heat.:p)

Coaches often times have the right game plans, but teams fail to execute. The tough Harvard tie is a prime example -- Seth directed the squad to blanket Leblanc and put him on his keister if he got anywhere hear the puck. The result? He ends up being left alone to score the tying goal.

Coach had the right idea, players failed to execute.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

WS: Of course that all plays a role. Still feel we will need to be able to make those during the game adjustments in order to be consistent winners. What's nice is that we seem to be finally getting the talent level and the depth to be able to do those things.

There is no need to adapt...great teams take THEIR game to the opposition and shove it right down their throats. It takes talent to do that and I believe we are gathering that talent.I don't look forward to out rope a doping Union & Cornell I look forward to sticking are game right up their asses.I believe that is exactly where SA is going. This is gonna be fun!!!!!!

Everyone knows you win with solid/strong performance from the upperclassmen. This senior class needs to play to their potential for this team to go anywhere. If SA doesn't establish that from the first puck drop this team will not advance. It is time to stop the games and instill leadership and confidence with this senior class-the talent is in place-the time is NOW.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Today is 26 May 2010. There are 129 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 2 October for the start of next season.

Sure-you can do that when you are a GREAT team . But how many great teams do you ever see? We have had only 1 or 2 in the past 48 years that I have been watching RPI hockey. We are more often beaten by teams that are not that great but make the changes during the game to outplay us. You can't dictate play for 60 minutes without being a truly dominating team and that is just too rare to even think about.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

There's still that worry about individual mistakes. One year later, hopefully one year more mature. Will the players take that responsibility to its fullest? I certainly would think so, but time will tell. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This is where I'm actually glad that we have a long non-conference schedule before the regular season starts, because we can then really find out who has the skills and the maturity to be the best our team can be when it comes time for league play.

I think this answer comes closest to the truth. If you don't have the horses, it doesn't matter what you do against certain teams or matchups. The most important adjustment I see is happening in the off-seasons. The coaches are getting better players and the 'tute seems to have gotten behind Appert.

The biggest change taking place is the addition of more defensemen that can hold onto the puck in their own end and consistently make decent breakout passes. If you can't get the puck out of your defensive zone, you can't use the speed and talent of your forwards. That began to change last season and I think will continue over the next couple of years.

Specifics? What changes during the game are any of you on this theme talking about? Would you suggest changing to a two-man forecheck; bringing a forward back into the defensive zone to help in breaking out of the zone?
We saw this season where some teams tried to counteract the quick breakout up the middle by clogging the center and forcing the puck to the boards. Seth adjusted to that. I don't understand the small details of the game as well as some, so it would be illuminating to hear some specifics.

Couldn't agree more TB !

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Nice piece on Luke Curadi from the N.E. Hockey Journal: http://www.hockeyjournal.com/news/2010/05/23_curadigives.php

They did miss the fact that Luke skated at the NY Rangers prospect camp last summer.
A few of Monty's thoughts on the B.R.O....(listen up Doc :D :D )

“His puck skills and skating skills were always high end. He handles the puck well and has an absolute bomb. He is mature for his age, has a good work ethic and good character. He has a clear understanding of what he wants to do in his life.

“And then you add the physical element to his game. A lot of people have that size and you hear, ‘I wish he would use it.’ You don’t have to worry about Luke using his size. He relishes putting people in the wall. He relishes clearing the net and he defends his teammates, which is a little bit of a lost art today.”

Great article. I still can't wait to see him play. I know he will learn a lot from Monty, and also get some tips on what will and won't work in the college game.
