As RH pointed out, I think there's a chance that Higgs works his way into the role of the "get dirty guy" down low. He's got the right mindset and he can finish.
Certainly could happen, but it will be, as you wrote works "his way into the role". I can't see him starting the year with that duty.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

I guess its possible that Hambledon might have attempted numerous times to speak with him over the past couple years and JL just always declines to comment. Ive been reading the Colts articles in the SF for a while now and from what I can remember I rarely see any comments from JL, the team captain and scoring leader. Usually it seems the team captain is more or less a spokes person for a team. Who knows.

Haven't we all been reading those articles for a while now?! :D

I am happy to hear that Ouelette, JL's friend, is going to be in Spain, not taking courses at the University of Ottawa. JL won't be going to Spain, thousands of miles from his girlfriend. JL might have followed him to Ottawa -- not Spain.

Time for thoughts on a title for "RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread III".

Certainly possible, but reporters normally note this is in the piece -- indicating they attempted to get a comment -- avoiding the appearance of sloppiness or laziness.

Again, I'm not looking for the moon and stars -- a quote from JL saying he is still weighing all of his options would be a start. Then again, a quote from JL telling us what he had for lunch would be news. :p More than anything, I'm more than tired of the endless speculating that appears in S-F pieces. It reeks of laziness, IMO.

That's the main reason I checked out of the "will he or won't he" soap opera. At this point if he wants to come and be a part of RPI hockey, I'll be there to scream at the top of my lungs for him. If not, its his loss -- literally -- giving up a free world-class education.

OK, I'm putting the soapbox away for the day.:p

True. The lineup that takes the ice against CC might well be very different from what we see vs. Dartmouth on Nov. 5.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Bergin's line was 30 GP 4-7-11 (2 PP goals). IMO, Bergin needs to play with more confidence, period. Be it even strength or on the PP -- he was hesitant at times last season and it showed -- hurting us a few times. Again, this comes down to experience and I do think he'll show progress this fall.

Bailen's line was 58 GP 14-27-41 (6 PP goals). He was 6-10-16 in 37 GP his frosh year at BG, playing on both the PP & PK. My point is, he's no freshman.

We all know Seth expects to win a lot more games with this roster than he did last season. Having a confident leader - whoever it is - as the PP QB will help him do that. IMO, if Bailen comes in and runs the unit with confidence and attitude, you're gonna see him with the 1's. :p

It seems to me that we have the talent to put two excellent power play units on the ice for each PP. My guess (and hope) is that Seth will have two totally different approaches with each unit. Maybe one working the play down low, with the other generated from the point.
I like the way he coaches, so I will leave it up to him to get the best out of the talented personnel that we have.

Are there any good examples (youtube or not) of an effective down-low power play unit? I can't recall seeing this, but am interested. For the last few years, we've relied a little too much on sniping during the power play, and once teams figured this out, the PP% went down the tubes.

RPI 2010 Odd-Season Thread...Heard it Through the Bryan Vines...

Thanks a lot for getting that song stuck in my head.

RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread III: All in on Red.
RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread III: Jersey Shore or Bust.

These two might work for a regular season thread. The other two just seem tacky.

I think it depends on who was there..... were any of next year's freshmen participating? Perhaps Coach was speaking with a recruit about the workouts? From what babo reported to us, her son was able to watch the workout (and ask questions to the staff as well?), but was not allowed to participate.

Until a recruit is in school, he may not participate. I also think that Seth (a.k.a. "Otter"...:D ) may not supervise any sports related activities until the official 'pre-season' begins.

Yes, 30% was a lofty goal.

Yes, I put both O'Grady and Malchuk on the same PP unit. Basically, I thought that if we had two guys that could get down and dirty in front of the net, the opposition wouldn't be able to key into one or the other and keep them occupied.

Yes, all of this speculation is purely pulled out of my a** and I would seriously doubt that any of this is receiving serious speculation. Appert knows best how to approach each game and I expect to see excellent production.

And, DocD, excellent point about opponents becoming wise to our strategy. Another year of head coaching experience for Appert and a new assistant with head coaching experience should improve our ability to change it up on the fly.

WHY HASN'T THE SEASON STARTED YET!? I'm getting antsy.

As for a new title, I vote for FD08's, with "All in on Red" one of the season thread titles.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

I put that third one in there for all the JL people who think he will actually show up ever at RPI. Because it has been stated here that it is a soap opera.
