Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Question for alumni - this will be my first time purchasing alumni season tickets (the student connections are drying up). Can someone take me through how exactly seating assignments go for that? We'll have a decent size group signing up for tickets...

I would think put them all on the application. Either that, or call the box office and talk to them about getting a clump.

It'll be nice to actually hear some voice again from the other side of the Field House.

Just a suggestion from a long time ticket holder (we had 4 tickets every year from 1975-2002). When you talk to the ticket office, you will do far better in getting good seats if you are able to break up the group into smaller ones (who can still be seated near each other). Very large blocks of tickets in the best areas just do not exist that often. If you are looking for more than 6 seats it will be hard to get the best sections and have all the seats together. You can however get 2 or 3 blocks of 4 seats fairly close together. Give the ticket office something to work with and be flexible. The demand for tickets is not that high but getting more than 4 seats together in a choice location is difficult because of all the long time ticket holders keeping their locations intact. Good luck!!:)

TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) head men’s hockey coach Seth Appert has announced the team’s Class of 2014. The group of seven student-athletes includes three forwards and four defensemen. Four are from the United States while three hail from Canada.

“I am excited to announce the RPI class of 2014. These seven young men bring toughness, talent and depth to our program. Bryan Vines and Jim Montgomery did an outstanding job putting the class together as this group positions us to compete for an ECAC Hockey Championship.”

Below is an alphabetical list of Rensselaer’s recruits with their 2010-11 regular season statistics, 2010-11 playoff statistics and a quote from Coach Appert:

Nick Bailen LD 5-10 195 Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice
• 58 regular season games … 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points … 97 penalty minutes.
• 9 playoff games … 0 goals and 4 assists for 4 points … 6 penalty minutes
“Nick is a competitive and skilled defenseman who can play against the opposition’s top lines and run a power play. He comes with great experience having played four successful years in the USHL and an outstanding season at Bowling Green.”

Bo Dolan RD 5-11 185 St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees
• 39 regular season games … 9 goals and 16 assists for 25 points … 41 penalty minutes.
• 16 playoff games … 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points … 25 penalty minutes.
“Bo is a great addition for our program. He is a mobile, puck-moving defenseman who adds to our attacking style of play. More importantly, he is a fierce competitor and a winner.”

Brock Higgs LC 5-11 185 Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs
• 48 regular season games … 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points … 82 penalty minutes.
• 17 playoff games … 6 goals and 12 assists for 18 points … 16 penalty minutes
“Brock is a smart, skilled and competitive offensive player. He has good offensive instincts and creativity but he is at his best in the corners and scoring in the tough areas around the front of the net. He has had two very successful seasons in Kingston with strong playoff performances in both.”

Patrick Koudys LD 6-4 200 Hamilton, ON/Burlington Cougars
• 50 regular season games … 5 goals and 28 assists for 33 points … 42 penalty minutes.
• 12 playoff games … 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point … 16 penalty minutes.
“Patrick is big, young and very talented. He has the hockey intelligence, skill level and work ethic to become an elite defenseman. He comes very well coached by RPI alum Mark Jooris ’86.”

Guy Leboeuf LD 6-4 190 West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts
• 62 regular season games … 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points … 66 penalty minutes.
• 12 playoff games … 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points … 12 penalty minutes
“Guy is a big, talented defenseman who is starting to come into his own as a hockey player. He has the size and skill level to be a very strong defenseman on both sides of the puck.”

Johnny Rogic LC 6-0 190 North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs
• 59 regular season games … 18 goals and 29 assists for 47 points … 36 penalty minutes.
• 13 playoff games … 6 goals and 4 assists for 10 points … 8 penalty minutes.
“Johnny is a very versatile and fast forward. He has the competitiveness and intelligence to play against opponents’ top lines but is also extremely fast and creates offense in different ways. He is a winner and was well coached by RPI alum Nolan Graham ’03.”

Matt Tinordi LW 6-0 200 Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys
• 59 regular season games … 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points … 69 penalty minutes.
• 3 playoff games … 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point … 2 penalty minutes.
“Matt is an intelligent power forward. He has the mind and stick to make offensive plays but thrives in the physical element of the game and around the front of the opponent net. He he had a very strong second half of the season for Olds.”

Also eligible for the Engineers in 2010-11 is forward Greg Burgdoerfer ’13. The twin brother of former Engineers defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer ’10, Greg is a transfer from Air Force Academy who was forced to sit out last season due to NCAA regulations. The East Setauket, N.Y., native played 30 games for the Falcons in 2008-09, earning three goals, three assists and 35 penalty minutes in helping the team to the NCAA Tournament.

NOTES: Bailen attended Bowling Green University in 2008-09 before returning to the United States Hockey League last season. He had 16 points (6 goals, 10 assists) and 56 penalty minutes in 37 games for the Falcons … Koudys (pronounced cow-DICE) is the cousin of former Engineers forward Randy Koudys ’84. Jooris, his former coach, helped RPI to the 1985 NCAA Championship … Tinordi is the son of longtime NHL defenseman Mark Tinordi, who played 663 games with the New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, Dallas Stars and Washington Capitals. He is a former teammate of current Engineers forward Patrick Cullen ’12.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Even though this isnt a top 10 class by no means is this a horrible class either. I like how the team is getting taller on D and getting more speed up front. I know nothing about these players other than what I have read here and in the papers but I think Rogic and Tinordi are going to contribute decent numbers right away. Like said before practices are going to be intense for playing time. Is it too early to start the first game thread? :D

I thought so too, but the four heights listed are 5'10", 5'11", 6'4", and 6'4" for an average of 6'1.25". According to the roster the four dmen we are losing (including Zarbo) are 6'2", 6'3", 6'3", and 6'0" for an average of 6'2".

Maybe these younger boys can still have a growth spurt to surpass the 6'2"

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

I talked with somebody who played against Bailen a couple of times and said that he was shorter than his listing. So I researched and USCHO has him at 5 8

Hockey heights are always generous. I don't care as long as he is good. He's not out there for a jump ball.

You're going to love this kid. Everything I've been told and read about him makes him sound like a real SOB to play against. Think of him as a less-cheap-shot version of Alex Biega from Harvard.

Excellent!!!

WaP has the 2010-11 Engineers at a glance now that the recruit release is officially out.

Integration FTW.

Great analysis as always. I think I will disagree with the classification of Halpern, and put him under the speed players. Of the playing time he received, I think he was the most effective against the faster teams, like Yale. He does put the puck on net a lot, but I think between the two, you're more likely to see him on the quicker games because he's small and scrappy. Also, I always saw CJ Lee as one of the rougher players, since he typically played on the checking lines. Technicalities aside, though, you're right in that we have a lot of depth for the different types of teams we play. This will be a very fun year.

At least from what I heard on the radio a few years ago, I would expect to see the fast guys play against Colorado College. IIRC, they had difficulty playing against teams that liked to move the puck across the ice. Get the speed guys ready. Then with BU, that will be fun for the checkers. Against the Atlantic teams, fire when ready!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if I were plunking down two bucks, Bailen is my pick for the kid who will make the most immediate impact on our squad... he'll be an immediate 1 or 1A blueliner...and there is no doubt he'll pressure Bergin to QB the #1 PP.

I do agree that there will be competition at forward the likes of which we haven't seen in many moons. :p

Doc is right -- call the HFH Box Office...wherever it is currently being housed ( I hope they're knee deep into the front end renovation at HFH? Dunno, as I haven't been over that way in a while.) In any event, Dorothy Conroy is the B.O. Mgr. -- she is a great lady. Call 276-6262 and tell her what you're after ...she'll take it from there. I think the off-season hours are 10AM-3PM.

We havent really had a great QB on the #1 PP the past few years. At some points last season we were going 5 forwards on the PP. But if Bailen wants to step up and take this role on great. Maybe Bergin needs this competition to better his QB abilities on the PP.

The only reason Bergin hasn't been a stellar QB on the PP is because of his injuries.

I expect a much more potent PP (30% anybody?) with a healthy Bergin and a set of forwards such as Polacek, JDA, O'Grady, and Malchuk (if Appert decides to go with 4 forwards).
