Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

As for a new title, I vote for FD08's, with "All in on Red" one of the season thread titles.

That's like voting for the Rickroll to win a Grammy. It was only meant to be a joke.

If anything, babo's suggestion is the best. Plus, we already had "Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail"...

I know that as well as you do, but I still find it humorous. And, what's wrong with Rick Astley's hit 1987 pop song?

That some of his lesser known songs (like Together Forever or A Cry for Help) were a lot better.

And REDRocket: So corny, yet so funny once you think about it.

Let's also add that Coach has some "job security", as it were, since he's set until 2014. I can't wait to see what he can do.

And, DocD, excellent point about opponents becoming wise to our strategy. Another year of head coaching experience for Appert and a new assistant with head coaching experience should improve our ability to change it up on the fly.

For the longest time I have been upset by the fact that our coaching does not seem to adapt well to in game changes made by the opposition. (at least for the past 15 years!) I would just love for us to be able to adapt our game between periods as well as someone like Joe Marsh at SLU. We often seem to be in control for the first 20 minutes or so and then face a team that made some adjustments between periods and we lose whatever edge we had. It does appear that this year we will have players who are flexible enough to make those adjustments on the fly.

More puff from Hambledon - "sure enough there's Jake out on the ice...blah blah blah..." He doesn't have the slightest motivation to shed any light on JL's situation. I guess it shouldn't irk me as much as it does...the death spiral of journalism continues.

I also think that the Standard Freeloader's aim for coverage is vastly different than what we're looking for. I'm sure they're thankful to still have him up there rather than pining over where he's potentially going next.

As for a thread title, I'm aiming for a record length title:

RPI 2010-2011 Off-Season Thread III -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '14

Red Cloud seal of approval.

RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread III: All in on Red.

Red Cloud seal of approval for a future thread closer to the start of the season. At this rate I'm thinking it'll be part VI (JHC...)

The alternative is to be far enough ahead that we don't have to adapt. :)

Doc...why would a team who has control of the first 20 minutes make adjustments? It is obvious the other team not in control needs to make adjustments.

As for adjustments, you can tweak a forecheck here or there, tighten up on the D zone coverage, or expose an opponent's weaknesses and capitalize on them.

However, when all is said and done, it is up to the players to execute the adjustments. Some coaches have a game plan in mind and feel their team's game and how they play is more important to execute than trying to adjust to another team's game.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

This is semi-relevant:

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/NY-Democratic-Election-94821139.html

The New York Democratic Convention begins today, and though current New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is widely expected to receive the nomination for governor, other big choices loom for lieutenant governor and the Attorney General nomination.

The decision for lieutenant governor could come as early as today, Newsday reports. Cuomo is considering Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute president Shirley Ann Jackson, and former federal prosecutor Denise O'Donnell.State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Yonkers, the newspaper said.

So much for Mayor McCheese.

Now that Troy made them stop building her new mansion, perhaps she's eager to GTFO of town. Then again, perhaps this is just another politico that is just going to give her the finger and keep moving on with business. :D

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Wasn't she also considered for the job when Client #9 was running for governor? I'm sure the answer would probably be the same, even if she could have been governor by now.

Yes, she was.

I don't know if I'm buying this. Like GLM said, her name keeps popping up and she keeps getting passed over. In 2000 and 2004 she was supposed to be the first choice for Presidential Science Advisor but Gore and Kerry both lost. In 2006 she was a possible Lieutenant Governor choice for Spitzer but was passed over (and, shockingly, would have become Governor if she hadn't been), and was passed over by Obama for both PSA and Secretary of Energy in 2008.

Let's be honest - it'd be hard for her to find a job somewhere else that would pay her more than she's making now.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Yes, 30% was a lofty goal.

Yes, I put both O'Grady and Malchuk on the same PP unit. Basically, I thought that if we had two guys that could get down and dirty in front of the net, the opposition wouldn't be able to key into one or the other and keep them occupied.

Yes, all of this speculation is purely pulled out of my a** and I would seriously doubt that any of this is receiving serious speculation. Appert knows best how to approach each game and I expect to see excellent production.

And, DocD, excellent point about opponents becoming wise to our strategy. Another year of head coaching experience for Appert and a new assistant with head coaching experience should improve our ability to change it up on the fly.

WHY HASN'T THE SEASON STARTED YET!? I'm getting antsy.

I guess I view it a bit differently. I thought our PP - and our offense in general - suffered from not shooting the puck enough...skating by open looks for that "perfect" pass. And no, I am not one of those people that yell "shoot the puck" incessantly, but IMO we need to get more pucks to the net, preferably with traffic, so guys like Malchuk, O'Grady and Higgs can bury them.

Good point. But the Colts core mission is to develop players for the next step be it MJ's or D1. As we've all stated here repeatedly, JL had nothing left to prove in Cornwall last year...as for yet another year there, it'd be a laugher, IMO.

That's their stated goal, but the team ownership and staff mostly wants to win, or maybe I should say "make money".

Indeed a fourth year in the CJHL seems like waste, and it isn't like he is furthering his education like at a college.

I didn't know they had stopped rebuilding the mansion, when did that happen? News doesn't travel so well along the thruway.

WS, you're absolutely right about getting the puck to the net. Those split seconds exist where the forward isn't going to be able to block the shot, we just have to capitalize on them. Plus, goalie's pads is just fine. If you come up against a hot goalie that smothers everything, that's going to happen, then look for the side-to-side play. If anything, we just haven't been able to have that body in front to grab the rebound. Hopefully we'll see that this year; I know Malchuk gave us a great glimpse of it last year, which is why he regularly started, even if it was on the checking line.

If Monty can't get/take him, maybe we can hold out hope that Youngstown might take a gander at him. They're the top-end junior A league team closest to his comfort zone.

You took it a bit wrong-the opposition makes the adjustment after the early control we exhibit-and then we should be able to counter that in some way. However for the past many years we just kept doing the same thing no matter what the other side has done. I would just like to see us be able to adapt better than we have to the way a game proceeds. We finally have enough talent to do it and I believe a coach who is as committed to win as any in our history. I go back a long way and just love a coach who will stop at nothing to win (see Ned Harkness).:)
