RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Im happy being in the ECAC but wouldnt be upset at all if HE comes a calling. A couple years ago I recall reading an article where HE expressed some interest in bringing the league up to 12 teams from the 10 they have now and I always thought us and Q would be nice additions. However, I really cant see RPI switching hockey conferences unless the school decides to bring its entire athletic department up to the D1 level.

I suspect that QU would be interested if HEA wanted them. As to RPI moving its whole athletic program up to D-I that would change everything. It has come up before, primarily when the drop-scholarships-for-playup-schools referendum was considered. There was a rumor, never confirmed, that RPI and JHU were going to join the Patriot League if that were to happen. IMO, that still represents the best choice at the D-I level, but I don't see it happening. There are three members playing D-I hockey; Colgate, Army, and Holy Cross.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

With the ECAV, RPI should now have the facilities to entertain a jump to D1. I'm no expert on all the ramifications and requirements but I have to think that operating budgets would have to go way up and a sport or two would probably need to be dropped. Considering school size and the academic rigor, my inclination is that RPI has a pretty good deal now and shouldn't go in that direction. As for the hockey program, I wouldn't mind a move to HE but it's probably right that we wouldn't be invited unless we moved up all the sports. Two HE schools are Div 2 except hockey (Lowell and Merrimack) and the rest are complete D1. However, RPI would be a good candidate if HE does want to increase to 12 and I would think the AD could make at least a good argument.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I've never liked the system where the same team is played on two consecutive nights, as in my mind it would give reason to only attend one of the games, not to mention you'd only get to see your potential rival every other year rather than every year. I realize in most leagues that this is the case because of travel difficulties. That just my humble opinion, though.
I believe(could be wrong) that Appert has mentioned before in the past that he likes the idea of playing the same team on consecutive nights. It makes it alot easier to prepare for one opponent then two different ones during the week. I also think it adds an extra element to the game, especially for the back end of the series. Ive always wanted to see this style of schedule in ECAC but not sure how they could pull it off.

An opinion that I happen to completely agree with. I do not like seeing the same team on 2 consecutive nights unless it is the playoffs. During the season I like the variation we get with seeing 2 teams on a weekend.

I would think it easy to institue this system-only you play a team at home one year and on the road the next year. With the current economy it sure would save on travel expenses. In fact that might be a major reason for that system.

We can get away with the travel partner system because, for the most part, the travel partners are fairly close to each other. With the other leagues, that really isn't possible (who would travel partner with Air Force?). It's even a stretch in Hockey Rast, even if it were UNH and Maine travel partnering, that's one heck of a drive to Orono. Even then, who does UVM travel with?

Is your keyboard broken in such a way that an 'E' becomes an 'R' ? :p

ROFL, I am not quitr surr about this onr. Maybr I will takr a look at thr programming on it. I was going morr towards thr common mrmr on this sitr, but prrhaps your commrnt is trur. :D

*facepalm* I never said anything about the 'e' and 'r', just the 'E' and 'R' :p

Oh, OK. But back on topic, one thing I did notice about Hockey East (see, I got it fixed! :D ) is that all of the teams are in New England. Wouldn't it seem a little odd to have a NY team in a New England conference? Granted it's not as odd as having Air Force in an Atlantic association. I still stand in agreement with the previous thoughts regarding old rivalries, though. Granted the same argument could be made for UVM, and look how they have turned out thus far compared to where they were when they left the ECAC.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

#12 will always remain #26 in my heart. :D

I wonder how many more USCHO memes we can fit into this thread, now that #26 Union has also been brought up... is there anything that we can blame on western bias (since it's the regular season)? :D

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

At least USCHO got Cornell right. (Oh yeah, that's the Pyongyang reference.)

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

The best option for "RPI the hockey team" can be different than the best option for "RPI the university". That has always been the case, and it seems to be the crux of the matter.

. :D

You nailed it RB. This is where the rubber meets the road. Asking the admin. and gowns to OK leaving an academic-centric league for an athletic focused league. The decision is far more than a hockey decision...it is exactly where Addessa ran aground and he refused to let go of it... If you want to compete in HE then things would have to change at RPI admissions, there is no disputing this.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Just a misplaced reminder to folks that Jerry D. (12-1-2-3) and the Marlies will be in Glens Falls this Thursday night. I am starting my hockey trifecta weekend early and will attend that game as well as both RPI games on the weekend. :D
