Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I would think it easy to institue this system-only you play a team at home one year and on the road the next year. With the current economy it sure would save on travel expenses. In fact that might be a major reason for that system.
The games would be played Home and Home ie: Yale would come to Troy on Fri.nite....then we would head to New Haven on Sat.thats the way they do it out west....makes for some intense games.Just think if we traveled to Cornell the night after Burgdoefer blew up Devin at the field house....that would have been an intense game worth traveling to see....Not that it matters I vote for Hockey East ASAP !!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as academic standards I believe it may be harder to get into Boston College than RPI (at least thats my understanding)And I suspect it isn't much harder to get into the Business School @ RPI than any Business School @ the colleges in Hockey East. Boy am I going to catch Holy Heck for this post. But I can assure everyone I haven't wet my bed in years contrary to what our former collegue Red Cloud has accused me of several times.

For non-athletes, BC may indeed be harder to get into than RPI. For athletes, however, BC has far, far more flexibility than RPI. This is coming from someone who readily admits that RPI is way more lenient with admissions for hockey players than many on here care to believe.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

It indeed has nothing to do with RPI hockey, but I figured those of you there would be able to shed some light on this. I know that Troy once had a major league baseball team. They moved to NYC and became the Giants, and subsequently the team moved to San Francisco. I also read in the Record that there was perhaps some illegality about the move to NYC, but is there really some groundswell of opinion in the CD that the Giants' World Series trophy should be brought to Troy http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2010/11/09/sports/doc4cd87f5b29b63607908682.txt.

If you think BC isn't bending the admissions process (as RPi does) to admit their kids then I've got news. When is the last time you heard of BC losing a recruit because they couldn't get him through admissions?

Bottom line as Ralph pointed out is any such discussion goes way beyond hockey: top to bottom, the ECAC is a far superior academic conference and you'd be asking the gowns at RPI to be OK with ditching it for HE. They wouldn't swallow it for Big Mike, and its anyone's guess as to whether they would now.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I should also point out that theres now a link to a College Hockey All Access interview with Tyler Helfrich on the league site as well.

To save everyone else the trouble, the interview begins at about the 39 minute mark.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

A little off topic. The TUC has new dasher boards, and scoreboard cylinder shape with clear picture thats no fuzzy at all. A much needed improvement for them. Too little too late some would say. Are we getting their old one does anyone know?

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

what are we at 4 disallowed goals already on the year? geez ***

Rabbani's on Saturday was deserved no goal from the sound of it (I wasn't there, so can't say for sure), and I'm not sure about the other one that game. I remember the CC one. What was the 4th?

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

I believe(could be wrong) that Appert has mentioned before in the past that he likes the idea of playing the same team on consecutive nights. It makes it alot easier to prepare for one opponent then two different ones during the week. I also think it adds an extra element to the game, especially for the back end of the series. Ive always wanted to see this style of schedule in ECAC but not sure how they could pull it off.
You are correct, SA does prefer this scheduling. He told me this 2 years ago after leaving Cornell to travel to Colgate, at night, when they drove into a snowstorm and veered off the road at one point. This was just after the Albany River Rats bus accident. Perhaps now the team stays in the town that night and leaves the next morning...I don't know. This was 2 yrs. ago so perhaps his thinking has changed about the scheduling...this I also don't know. Sidebar; I can't (won't) watch the video of the H gggggggg.....

Ralph, close. Troy and Worcester were the original members of the National League. Troy's team was called the Haymakerss when they played, They never had a winning season in their five years in the league, but have had plenty of Hall of Famers that came here to play. There was a vote taken by league owners to kick Troy and Worcester out of the league due to bad attendance, even though they completed their schedules and fulfilled all other requirements of the league. Worcester voted to kick themselves out of the league :D. and Troy later agreed that they wouldn't have a team if 1) MLB would acknowlege that Troy had a team in the league and 2) MLB would play exhibition games in Troy, none of which has happened. When Troy left town, they were idle for a few years until they found a place, eventually New York, and were renamed the "Giants" because the Troy players were very tall. They later moved to SF where they play today. There was a letter written a few years ago by the mayor's administration to get MLB to honor its 100 year old contract and play some exhibition games here, but there has been no respnse. Seeing as how the Valleycats are affiliated with the Astros, a good Giants-Astros game would be nice. Both teams can play a regular season game at Bruno Stadium in between stops to the East Coast. Perfect.

I just want to see him on the ice.I think he is showing rather rapidly that he is adapting to NCAA division I hockey. He has some things to learn, of course, but he seems to add something to our line up.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Im happy being in the ECAC but wouldnt be upset at all if HE comes a calling. A couple years ago I recall reading an article where HE expressed some interest in bringing the league up to 12 teams from the 10 they have now and I always thought us and Q would be nice additions. However, I really cant see RPI switching hockey conferences unless the school decides to bring its entire athletic department up to the D1 level.

This last tine this came up I believe was 1994 when Buddy powers was behind the RPI bench. After a long drawn out"commitee" driven process RPI obviously decided they were happy where they are. Long standing rivalries ending and the loss of the Ivy league quasi connection were the primary public reasons given for staying put. Unless the Ivy league schools have another team go D1 in hockey and they form their own "pure" league I just don`t see RPI moving.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Hello, everybody. Lots of stuff happening at Without a Peer this week.

This week's podcast will air tomorrow night at 8pm, and we're expecting to go a full 90 minutes since there's a lot to talk about with the big Union weekend coming up - plus we have two very special guests: Ken Schott from the Gazette, and senior defenseman Jeff Foss. The phone lines will be open throughout the program for anyone to ask a question of Ken, Jeff, or myself, or even just to make a comment.

http://www.withoutapeer.com/2010/11/upcoming-podcast-ken-schott-jeff-foss.html

I didn't get a chance to drop by last week to let everyone know that Jill Vandegrift would be on the podcast, if you want to listen it's available on demand at our podcast page and in the latest post at WaP.

We've got a little special something coming later this week for Union. Stay tuned.

Finally... our new logos are finally out! Check them out and let us know what you think!
