Re: >>>>> RIT TIGERS 2012-13: Clawing our way up the standings in the 2nd half
The concept that Al Simone somehow embraced DI athletics and wanted RIT to be a part of them in any way, shape, or form is laughable. Totally laughable.
For starters, I'll refer to this article from City Newspaper: http://www.rochestercitynewspaper.com/rochester/the-big-charade/Content?oid=2129932
In it is the reference to Simone's, apparently now forgotten, call for the NCAA to abolish DI athletics all together. The link to the white paper he authored on the RIT.edu site has been disabled or lost over time, but in the paper, he proclaimed that the school would never be a part of DI athletics, and questioned if athletics had a role at all as part of the college educational experience. To think he did an about face shortly after this was written, and decided to support the DI transition of the hockey program is totally ridiculous. Make no mistake about it, he was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the DI arena by the board of trustees and some long time, high dollar donors to the school. It is no coincidence that shortly after the DI announcement came the word that he was looking to retirement.
I'm not here to **** on Al Simone's legacy, I'll let his own deeds stand for judgment by those who choose to, but I think its important to realize some of his deeds don't exactly support the concept he supported DI athletics at all.
