RIT managed to sell out the Black Friday game.

I don't think losing a game is always on persons fault, but that major penalty..

Only 6 shots on 6 power plays doesn't help either.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I don't think losing a game is always on persons fault, but that major penalty..

That penalty was right in front of where I was sitting, and it wasn't worthy of a 5 and a game. It was no worse than the checking from behind penalty that was whistled on RPI in the first period, which was given only a minor. Foote choked on that call. Plain and simple. I know he has friends and co-workers who are RIT fans and that past negative comments about him have been met with a lot of defense, but quite frankly he has regressed in terms of the quality of his officiating. It was worthy of a minor, no question about it, but nothing more than that.

This really highlighted to me the stark difference in quality between what is considered an upper echelon AHA team and a team that quite frankly is a bottom feeder in the ECAC. While RIT had an advantage in the speed department, they were hard pressed to do anything with it because they could not out muscle the much larger RPI squad. RIT struggled to win battles for loose pucks, struggled to establish any sort of strong forecheck and had virtually no presence in front of the net at all, in either zone. The fact that this game was even on the scoreboard aside from a 1:30 stretch on the PK in the second, was quite frankly a miracle, as RIT got outplayed in virtually every aspect of the game.

The power play continues to be an absolute joke. RPI had a significant number of quality chances while RIT was on the powerplay. It could actually be argued that RPI's PK had better scoring chances than RIT's PP.

If there are positives to be had, its that Greg Noyes seems to be finding his stride a bit, his play has really picked up the last few weeks, Shane continues to be a rock in the net, and McReynolds continues to play with heart and grit on every shift (he delivered the biggest hit of the night in open ice in the first period). I'll call it a positive that Descoteaux was given a night off, it was long over due, he's not played well at all this season.

As for the not so bright side, once again a second tier quality non conference opponent basically took it to RIT, and provided a glimpse of just how far behind RIT is behind the level of competition outside of the AHA. If this school is going make the investment of $30 mil. in a new arena, it should take the step of moving the school to DI athletics across the board, so that RIT can do it the right way, join a real conference and compete for the best players available on a level playing field, including scholarships. Otherwise, it is nothing but a total waste of time and money.

Couldn't have said it better.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I wouldn't call RPI a "bottom feeder". Off to a rough start, yes, but I don't think they'll end that way. I heard way too many people last night making comments about how we should be easily beating them. That bothered me as much as the outcome!! (And while they do have hockey scholarships, RPI is DIII for everything else and hasn't been doing too badly.) I personally don't think RIT would have too much trouble competing in the ECAC after the new arena. To me the step up in conferences along with the facilities is more important than stepping up to DI across the board and scholarships. (Yes, I know many of you disagree ... so be it!)

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I actually agree that getting us out of the AHA into a 'real' conference is far more important than moving up to DI in all sports.

Ignoring the insults directed at a team with, ignoring divisional differences, just as many national championships as you...

The call on RPI was in open ice (at least anything that could remotely be considered hitting from behind; I don't remember any sort of call along those lines, nor do I see any sort of call in the box score, the closest being a boarding call, although there was one where RPI got called 2 minutes for an RIT skater losing an edge), while the call on RIT was from behind and into the boards, which according to the rule book, is 5 and game, and it was blatant.

Although I certainly hope you weren't the fan that was put in his place by a player's mother...

I'm as frustrated as you are with the lack of progress the last six years, and the obvious disparity on display last night, but I certainly don't think a new arena is a waste of time or money. Being able to offer scholarships is not exactly an automatic ticket to the NCAAs, and moving the school to D-I across the board represents a real change in the university's culture that must be carefully considered.

But here's a thought -- why has the discussion only been about choosing between D-I or D-III? Might not RIT fit best, really, as a D-II institution? At D-II, we could offer scholarships, and the women's hockey team could even play in a D-I conference without an exception to the new rule (or a moratorium waiver, or whatever the current situation is).

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I thought that RIT outplayed RPI at even strength, to be honest....but I didn't have a problem with the 5 minute major call and obviously the difference in the game was special teams. Even with the major, RIT had more powerplay time than RPI, they just couldn't take advantage. The PP was brutal.

Loss is a loss. Losing to a 2-10 team - even one that's played a difficult schedule - is not exactly a great result for us. Against the higher competition the team's scoring woes and lack of finish showed up again.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

After watching McGowen's hit again on tv I can understand the major. He took a "run" at the RPI kid hitting him high and hard, driving him down and head-first into the boards. I'm hard-pressed to defend that. I love to watch Scott Knowles play, always giving 100%, and Madolora is having a solid season, no doubt, but for my money the best player on the team is Ben Lynch. He plays smart hockey game in/game out, always with his head up, he's a superior skater, and very good puck-handler. Most of all, he's a great passer, and I wish those on the receiving end were equal to the task. If you want to know one reason Favot and Brenner looked so good last year you need look no further than Mr Lynch. He made a lot happen for them, and the team.

I think the opposite - that Brenner and Favot had a lot to do with Lynch looking good last year. They were/are certainly superior players to Lynch at this point in time. I think he is one of the guys that needs to step up the most. 4 assists and no goals is not good enough for what he showed last year. I certainly don't have him close to best player on the team (Saracino, Burt even with his inconsistencies, Garbowski, Colavecchia, and McGowan have all showed better this year IMO).

Absolutely. I thought Lynch would be up there this year, but he's disappointed me greatly.

No leagues for the other sports. The closest is the Northeast-10 which has Le Moyne in Syracuse. There are only, I believe, 4 D-II schools in New York State.

This was a similar roadblock in RPI's recent discussions. D-II is practically non-existent in NYS, and the associations aren't overly stellar - Adelphi on Long Island, St. Rose in Albany, Le Moyne in Syracuse, and Pace in NYC. Rah rah.

FWIW, we've had off and on rumors of a D-I move ourselves.

Should such a thing occur, I would expect we would join the East Coast Conference along with Roberts Wesleyan. I count seven New York teams in that conference alone, not counting Roberts.

There's one more about to be added in NYS: Roberts Wesleyan College (west of Rochester) is moving from NAIA to D-II. Rah rah is right. None of those are schools that either Rensselaer or RIT would be looking to be associated with.

Legislation that came in the wake of the lifting of the NCAA's D-I moratorium now requires a move of everything to D-II prior to moving to D-I. The same applies in moving one team from D-III to D-I. However, RIT has convinced the NCAA to allow teams to go directly from D-III to D-I when there is no D-II sport, thus removing that obstacle for the women's hockey team. It would make no sense for them to play for four years at D-II and have no championships to participate in.

But for either esteemed university to make the total jump to D-I, there's a long road with a D-II interim and few teams to play.

This leads me to wonder if a few teams might be looking to move together in order to be happy... for instance, 5 or 6 teams in the liberty league all moving together.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

I remember the radio guys last year talked about Lynch a lot and had the impression he was going to be a big star. When he got his first goal, they thought it was going to open the floodgates.

I don't think those gates ever really opened last year, and they seem firmly shut this year. Meanwhile Garbowsky and his freshmen friends are eating up the ice team and tallying the scoresheets. We also saw what looked like the beginning of Potts big breakout, and Cornacchia seems to be making the most of his senior year, but yet Lynch has remained quiet. Maybe he just needs to find a good line to fit in with, but so far I'm pretty unimpressed.
