Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

Caught the RPI game on radio from my resort room in Myrtle Beach and have a few thoughts.

The RIT power play is terrible. This HAS to improve. But I also think that is also part of the next thought.
RIT has a hard time finishing plays. Seems like I heard quite a few shots going wide or hitting the post. It's like RIT gets all the offensive stats going their way except on the scoreboard.

Anyone who thinks that RPI was a "should win" I don't think knows their hockey. RPI made the NCAA tournament last year, and was preseason #4 in the ECAC - hardly a bottom feeder. This is a game that RIT could have won.

At the end of the day, it was an OOC game, and RIT will need to focus on the AHA schedule and really work on scoring. UConn is no slouch.

I guess my question was two part: when did RIT convince the NCAA to let teams go from D-III to D-I, and why would the inability to do so be an obstacle for the women's hockey team (given that women's hockey has a D-I/II national championship)?

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

Has anybody calculated the ROI of a jump from DIII or DII to DI for all of their teams at a university? I imagine it would be quite a bite out of the bottom line and that may be holding up any push up to the DI level depending on the types of teams one would field in D1.

Seems Football and Basketball would be a prerequisite as that's where the large sources of income are found.

We already have squeakball, and there are plenty of D-I schools that don't play gridiron football. I don't think it'd be an issue.

When the Men's team moved from D3 to D1?

When the Men's team moved from D3 to D1?

from my understanding it was this summer. basically RIT argued on behalf of our women's team, as these rules were only put in place after the moratorium was lifted.

Is anyone planning on making the trip to UVM for the Catamount Cup? UVM has a beautiful campus and Burlington is a great town. I am looking forward to making the trip. Too bad we don't get a match against UVM however.

I might be... i'm from boston so being a student I might head up there over break, I also may or may not be making a trip to the wisconsin games.

Re: >>>>> RIT Tigers 2011-2012 <<<<< Dreaming is Done, Time to ROAR

After watching McGowen's hit again on tv I can understand the major. He took a "run" at the RPI kid hitting him high and hard, driving him down and head-first into the boards. I'm hard-pressed to defend that. I love to watch Scott Knowles play, always giving 100%, and Madolora is having a solid season, no doubt, but for my money the best player on the team is Ben Lynch. He plays smart hockey game in/game out, always with his head up, he's a superior skater, and very good puck-handler. Most of all, he's a great passer, and I wish those on the receiving end were equal to the task. If you want to know one reason Favot and Brenner looked so good last year you need look no further than Mr Lynch. He made a lot happen for them, and the team.

Watching the game on TV, I found it kind of a border line call. It looked like to me he hit him from the side, in the old days this would have been a great hit. These days its borderline with the NCAA airing on the side of calling the major with all the talk about head injuries, which I feel gets abit over stated, but thats another conversation. I think Coach Hills was on the head of the nail when he said basically its frustrating cause you see the same hit an its not call. I think it was mostly called cause the kid stayed down for several seconds, and of course I am pretty sure he did not miss a shift. All I really have to offer in the end is you have got to be careful if your going to hit anyone especially near the boards and you not lined up directly ahead because you never know when the ref is going to pull the major out of his pocket. Knowing the NCAA it will change in 2 or 3 years....

The sophmore that I actually really expected more production from is Noyes. He had a had a solid season on the offensive end of things, sometimes he took too big of risks, but you think that would be reduce with maturity. However this year I think he been more shaky on the defensive end and the offensive pay off has not been there. I think he has the talent to be much better waiting for it to show.

Colevacchio and Mitchell I think are the best two players from that class. And have been two of the more steady players and it refelcted in the stat sheet. Lynch has not stuck out as playing bad in any game I can think of, but on the same note I can not think of a game I thought he was very impressive either. This team is really without a scoreing leader. We were hoping for someone to emerge from a group of quality player to be a big goal scorer like Sarazin did couple years back. It does look like RIT will have to find a way to get it done with less scoring, unless somone gets really hot, we are all most a third of the way into the season and really only Potts is on pace for a solid double digit goal season. All though just another goal or two would get 5 or 6 other guys on pace for double digit season. Here an interesting stat, only 5 Tigers were in double digits for goals last season, but of course one of them was a 20 goal scorer in Tyler Brennar...

3-4 of us from the seacoast NH and MA area are planning to drive up. We'll be joining some friends that live in the Burlington area for the games hopefully.

I'll likely be at at least the Saturday Wisco game. trying to get out for the Friday game, but depends on the Mrs. Schedule. Got family up there. Was waiting to hear if the Alumni Association was going to be planning anything.

As my first attended game this year,
I though a big part was that RPI seemed to be quicker on the rush/breakout and the lack of offense was likely because the RPI D-men were pretty large and physical which kept the tigers more outside. The PP was bad, they wee rarely able to set up,and they seemed to gave up more chances shorthanded then they actually had on the PP.

Well, it wasn't when the men's team moved, since that was routine at the time and the NCAA didn't need convincing. I was hoping it was this, the women's team, but if that was the case, why has there been no announcement yet?

They are determining when they will officially move up. If they are going to do it next season, they may be making sure they can get games. Otherwise, they will do it the following year.

Just because we can move up doesn't mean we're going to as soon as we get/got the OK to do so. Patience, my friend. Patience.

From Lerch's column

Bizzare stat of the week:

RIT is 2-1 when allowing 5 goals, but only 2-2-3 when allowing 2 or fewer. Try and figure that one out.

New locker rooms for both teams, a new arena right around the corner, and hopefully a new announcement about the Ladies soon.
Now lets get the school to move everything up so they can get full scholarships and level they playing field.

Honestly? I dont want to see RIT on the bottom of the standings next to New Jersey Institute of Technology when it comes to basketball. I dont think we have the chops.

It really all comes down to how much RIT would invest in the other sports that would determine how successful they are. There are a lot of schools that are D1 just for a paycheck and dont put a ton of effort into fielding a good team. Since we definitely dont have to worry about them starting football again, I think they could do well at basketball after a little time especially if they join a conference like say the MAAC, the conference of Canisius and Niagara and the original sponsor of the AHA.

Also take a look at BC this year. Their football team sucked and their basketball team doesnt really look that good either (Admittedly, BC might not be a great comparison with RIT but they were the first school that came to mind with a good hockey team and terrible D1 basketball team).
