>>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

The fear of losing rivalries is what's holding back any evolution at all in the college hockey landscape.

Where would RIT be if we'd been afraid of losing the Elmira rivalry? (Okay, if more of us had been afraid of losing it; I know I mentioned it at least once.)

Rivalries come and go. There will be others to replace the ones of legend.

You're definitely right that rivalries come and go. For RPI it's right now where some consider Clarkson, where others consider Union. For you guys, there's Elmira, but I've also heard the same case with SUNY Geneseo, and now that you're in D-I, it's starting to shift over to Canisius, and who knows, maybe you'll have a rivalry with Niagara. At least with Elmira, though, you'd likely still be able to carry the rivalry through to your other sports if you share a division (sorry I'm not up to snuff on those, unfortunately no time to research at this point), maybe also U of R? I know that's what we do.

A little off topic from all the talk about shaking up the leagues. But has anyone taken a look at the new Atlantic Hockey website. It looks good.

Actually, RIT had more intense rivalries with SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Oswego than with SUNY Geneseo. Although every state school truly reilshed the chance to beat RIT, possibly Geneseo the most due to proximity if nothing else.
The Elmira - RIT hockey rivalry was something special, for sure. To date, there is no rivalry that comes close to that for the Tigers in AHA just yet (IMO). Everyone cites Canisius as a potential there. I think if it weren't for the brawl a couple years ago, they wouldn't even be in the discussion. When CC used to play in ECAC West, it was quite a rivalry. It seems like every year they would meet in the playoffs and go to multiple overtimes to decide the games. But so far in AHA, RIT has had the better of the Griffs on the scoreboard and in the standings by a wide margin.
In all other sports... RIT and Elmira were in the same conference (Empire 8) with other regional rivals Fisher, Nazareth, Alfred, and Ithaca. However, RIT is now joining the Liberty League with RPI, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, Union and UR. Should help fuel rivalries with our fellow D-III/D-I play-up hockey brethren (albeit from a different conference in hockey) and add to the river rivalry with the UR by finally being in the same conference.

It's one thing to sacrifice a rivalry as part of your program's evolution; what's the incentive to sacrifice a rivalry so another program can evolve?

That said, I think a lot of ECACers would gladly swap Union for RIT. Colgate and RPI could become travel partners, and Princeton would still be screwed... :p

Ask the folks in Elmira. They seem to have gotten over it okay.

Quite a few of them were even pulling for RIT during this year's tournament run. But probably just as many were hoping RIT would lose by 10 and end up with half the teams in the hospital.

really?!?! Rochester more mid-wes than Northeast?!?! the mid-west stops dead @ Ohio and does not go any further! just some basic geography were talkin about here....

After growing up on Long Island, when I moved to Rochester, culturally, believe systems, and attitude-wise, Rochester is definitely much more of a Midwest city than an East coast city. No question about that.

And BTW, there is no geographical line drawn on any map anywhere that defines a border for the midwest. It's purely a nebulous, state of mind definition (Erie is definitely a midwest, rust belt type of city).

(Reminds me of how New Yorkers and Long Islanders never consider Brooklyn and Queens as part of Long Island even though it is geographically sitting on the land mass defined as Long Island.)

i grew up in jersey, but i agree with your take on it. and even if you don't consider rochester midwest, it is midwest compared to the bunching of eastern teams that make up for a better "northeast".

Did anyone create an iCalendar of the RIT season they would share?

We're actually a fairly enlightened group of fans that simply enjoy good hockey, and the large majority were rooting for RIT and attending some of RIT's playoff games. Most compelling storyline of all college hockey for 09/10 ... they should have done the movie.

Unfortunately, IMO, neither RIT nor Elmira will enjoy the same rivalry intensity for the foreseeable future. No other schools in either AH or ECAC/W are geographically close enough or maintain near the travelling / rabid fan base. {sigh}

As we get closer to the start of the season.

Anyone think RIT has a legit shot of being in the USCHO Preseason Top 20?

The complete meltdown that you would have should RIT win the NCAA Championship would be something that I HOPE would be on you-tube so that we can watch.

Yes. I'll go with #15 as a nod to last year. And then a speedy exit when the first loss of the season comes.

A shot to be in it? Yes.
A legitimate claim to deserve to be in it? No.
The only reason they got ranked at the end of last season was because of two (rather awesome, btw) wins in Albany, not based on the season as a whole (2-7 ooc record). And now they are without their starting goaltender and top two defensemen from a season ago. Too many question marks to be nationally ranked preseason.
That being said, if RIT goes out and beats either St. Cloud, UNO (with respectable showings both nights) or both on opening weekend... different story altogether. Then I could see them ranked between 15 and 20 somewhere.
