Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

With Penn State seemingly all but set to add a team and the inevitable Big Ten Hockey conference formed, any thought that RIT would consider jumping to a new CCHA to play with teams like Miami and Notre Dame?

Obviously, the biggest benefit would be better competition and opponents.

The biggest drawback would be that it would be EXTREMELY difficult to be a constant factor in the conference due to lack of scholarships.

What are the odds of this actually happening?

I know Destler is obessed with sports. He did wonders in Maryland for their basketball! Simon thought very small. He was not a dreamer.

The AHA is fantastic for road trips, but that is all. It doesn't give us much national exposure. Playing teams like Miami and Notre Dame would definately give us National exposure.

Here is another thought, Rochester is on the controversy of not being part of the Northeast, along with Buffalo. Some Consider WNY the start of the mid-west. I think in a few years the CCHA would the be the perfect final fit for RIT HOCKEY. Rochester deserves to have this.

BLAST!!!! This game in Pittsburgh really messes up my World Juniors schedule, I could either go see RIT in this new arena. Or I stay in Buffalo and see the following games from the 200 level, row 1 at the blue line.

Switzerland Vs. Slovakia
Germany Vs. USA

really?!?! Rochester more mid-wes than Northeast?!?! the mid-west stops dead @ Ohio and does not go any further! just some basic geography were talkin about here....

The CCHA would be good for national exposure but thats about it. Farther travel distances (and alaska), and the scholarship issue. I would like to see the CCHA pick up UAH and see the total shake up and have a league w/ some of the ivies.

ECAC seems a much better fit for RIT than the CCHA, which is primarily Michigan-based. Western New York does bear some resemblance to other Midwest Rust Belt areas, but our ties to the East Coast are at least equally strong.

The odds are better than ever if what one poster who has connections is correct. It's seems likely in a couple years the conference will be formed. Nothing official has been announced, but word is that it will happen.

The ECAC seems a much better fit, but unless there is some realignment on the East Coast there is no room. The CCHA would provide better National exposure (tho without Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State less so). RIT could firmly plant themselves in a good place for midwest recruiting.

The big downside would be the question of how well RIT could compete without scholarships.

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

I will believe a BTHC when I actually see it formed and conference games have been played.

I think RIT will be in the AHA until it either folds or until all athletics goes DI. A major realignment of the east coast conferences doesn't make much sense right now. I've got to think most of the ECAC and HE schools are happy with the status quo.

Easy answer, unless you have tickets for games between (I don't know if these are actual matchups this year in the first round).

Sweden vs Finland
Czech Republic vs Russia
Canada vs Russia
USA vs Canada
USA vs Russia

Its RIT hockey time :) At least thats my opinion. Switzerland vs Slovakia is pretty throw away and while seeing any team usa game would be fun germany isn't a great matchup.

The one thing that non-Ivy ECAC schools are not enamored with is the late start by the Ivies and the short league schedule their reduced number of games causes. That leads to some non-league scheduling difficulties for the non-Ivies.

While I like the appeal of RIT in the current ECAC, that's clearly not going to happen unless a team folds or their is major reorganization. What Ed's comment brings up to me is how nicely RIT fits in an ECAC minus the Ivies conference. Take those teams and then throw in maybe RIT and Niagara and you have a league that makes a lot of sense geographically and in other ways (play up schools, etc.) That makes some space too ...

Out west you have BTHC, WCHA, CCHA.
In the east you have AHA (smaller), Ivy (just 6, but 6 stable schools and maybe Penn comes back), HE (unchanged), and Revised ECAC (maybe 8 teams).

Overall, two new conferences and presumably UAH finds a home and there is some hope for new teams to find a spot.

Never happen though ... seems too logical.;)

If the BTHC does get created, it's certainly possible. Actually, I don't think it would seem weird to put the Buffalo area teams in the CCHA, although I'm sure the regular trips through Canada might get a little boring after a while. But, I wonder if they would geographically break up AHA a little (maybe Air Force goes to the WCHA, though I know they like to play Army), or stick RMU/Mercyhurst into the CCHA.

I'm all for putting the Ivies into a separate conference (when you have to schedule NC games against intra-league teams it gets a little dull despite the rivalries), but geographically it may not necessarily work out because we use a travel partner system. I'd feel sorry for whoever partners with Q-Pac; that's a lot of travel for the home/home.

Re: >>>>RIT 2010 Offseason Thread-"You have to be a genius to go to RIT"

Harvard is in Hockey East, and they aren't going to give that up for an Ivy League without a fight.

If and when there is a BTHC, it will be interesting to see what will happen as part of realignment. I especially think Miami and Notre Dame will be looking to do something to help the CCHA OR find a better league. Pulling teams from the AHA would be a help because now any new smaller schools that want to add DI hockey will have a conference that they can compete in right away.

EDIT: Air Force don't like to play Army THAT much. Air Force requested, and got, an exemption so that they only play twice a year instead of 4 for 2 years. Army does not like this.

I don't know how much realignment would actually be done. CCHA goes down to 8 teams (UAH hasn't been included into the argument yet), and WCHA down to 10. Maybe Air Force goes to one of those western leagues along with UAH? Obviously you guys are more in tune with the AHA teams than I am.

Wait, it's Army that's unhappy with that arrangement? Does Army actually enjoy getting their asses kicked?

Army is 4-6-1 against Air Force since AFA joined the league, including 4-3-1 in the regular season. That's hardly an ***-kicking.

I guess I stand corrected, that's what I get for making assumptions I guess.

But then again, perhaps AFA is still more troubled by the prospect of a showdown with Army's AD than the actual team.

You've got it backwards. Army set only playing twice a year as a condition for them supporting Air Force joining the league.

Harvard currently is, most definitely, in the ECAC.

I was wondering if this was a reference to the recurring idea of Harvard moving to Hockey East that comes up every so often on these boards, along with a Big Ten Hockey Conference and a College Hockey Video Game.

I think the team that would be most unsatisfied with an Ivy/ECAC split is Cornell, which has traditional rivalries with Clarkson, RPI, and Colgate. (Of course, we also had a rivalry with BU back before the Great Divorce.)

That's exactly one of the reasons I think it wouldn't work, because not only the loss of rivalry (which could be extended to NC anyway; I don't think any of the three would mind), but Colgate would lose its travel partner. As for BU, RPI has pretty much made room enough in the schedule that we play them every year; I know Cornell only gets 7 NC games, but I don't see why they couldn't do the same. Didn't they play at MSG last year?

The fear of losing rivalries is what's holding back any evolution at all in the college hockey landscape.

Where would RIT be if we'd been afraid of losing the Elmira rivalry? (Okay, if more of us had been afraid of losing it; I know I mentioned it at least once.)

Rivalries come and go. There will be others to replace the ones of legend.
