RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I'm wondering (betting) that Wilson gave the guys a talking to about hustling to free pucks in preparation for the past weekend's games. From the RPI game, RIT gave up on a lot of close races for the puck in favor of defending the pass rather than trying to get to the puck first. IMO, it's always preferable to control the puck, especially given RIT's young defenders' need for further conditioning and experience rather than letting the other team get to the puck and trying to defend against a pass in your defensive zone.

In other news, never have I been so happy to be wrong about two pick 'em choices (I picked RIT to drop both of these games given their recent performance).

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I think the key to the Cornell win CLEARLY was defense. They made some HUGE clears when Cornell got their power play started. I remember hearing Spivak making some important clears. It was clearly a team win.

I totally disagree with this. While the D played well, I think that the key was hustle, speed, and getting to loose pucks. Their forecheck was exceptional too. Every time there was a loose puck there was an RIT player hustling for it and simply out working Cornell at that aspect of the game. The D did well in keeping most of Cornell shots to low percentage shots. I do agree on the team win part.

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

I heard about this, and also saw the hit that caused it. My thoughts got to him and his family, and hope his surgery is successful.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

Watched the replay of the RMU game tonight (in HD- missed when that started, but it's awesome), and Mitchell's OT goal seemed to be knocked in by a RMU defender going for a poke check. Awesome move to get there, but he seemed to lose it for a tick and the RMU goalie got crossed up.

One of the biggest problems the D has had this so far this year is that they have given up a considerable amount of high percentage shots. It sounded like that was not the case against Cornell. I agree the forecheck was really good as well. As for speed, I think that was one area that RIT would have had the advantage going in. Big defensemen are not always the fastest - and RIT was able to take advantage.

Oh - and BTW - that was Jan's first career win.

Tigers pick up another recruit from the BCHL. Another forward, this one committed for the 2012-2013 season.

Daniel Schuler, 5'10" 175lbs - DOB 8/28/92 - Hometown - PENFIELD,NY (yes, a hometown product).

He's playing with 2011 recruit Matt Garbowski on the BCHL leading Powell River Kings.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

I was wondering when the 'goalie wars' would flare up again....nice opening salvo.

Madolora 1-0-1
Rope 0-2-0
Watson 0-2-0

Now I'm not a math major but it seems that your implied statement is correct.

Happy Halloween everybody!

As far as the goalie competition goes, I can only comment on what I've seen in the two home games. Having not seen Ropponen (this year, at least) or Watson play, I can only comment on Madolora. I was concerned after the Lowell game about the apparent (from my distant vantage point, at least) soft goals given up. But it was his first game back from injury, and coach even alluded to that they may have tried to rush him back too soon. So I figured I'd still reserve judgement. After watching him against RMU Friday, I am much more encouraged about his potential. Not being a goaltender expert or anything, it still seemed to me like he reads the play very well and is usually very well positioned. I remember distinctly 3 different times that he faced an otherwise tough shot and made the save look simple because he was already waiting for it. His initial save ability was impressive. The one negative, which doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine, is his rebound control. Cases in point: 1) I think RMU started the game with 11 shots on goal before there was even one face-off in RIT's own zone (unless I missed one). 2) The first goal the Colonials scored was off a rebound. 3) The other goal they scored did not come directly off a rebound, but if he had controlled an earlier rebound on that RMU power play, the constant pressure may have been broken, possibly (not to mention that if he hadn't gone out of his way to slash the RMU player in front of the net RIT wouldn't have been short-handed to begin with). and 4) I can't remember exactly when, but I do remember one rebound kicking off his pad that went all the way to center-ice - now that's a juicy rebound! But... From what I understand, rebound control is an aspect of a goalie's game that is coachable. If that is true, I hope he gets a boatload of starts this season and really progresses. If he does, I can't wait to see what we're saying about him by playoff time this year and by the same time next season. I'm not going to go comparing him to Demichiel or Guimond just yet, but if he works at it you never know... I don't remember anyone being too hot for Jared to become the next big thing when he was a sophmore. But look how that turned out.

I've only seen the UML game in person but this is what sticks out in my mind in the waning minutes of that game......

Just before the tying goal (we're talking seconds here), somebody got their stick knocked out of their hands (can't remember who) but instead of picking it up and getting back to the play in the Tiger zone, they slowed and looked to the ref who wasn't about to call a penatly, shortly there after, the tying score happened.

In the OT period, there was a bad pass in the Tiger zone which left Madolora 1 on 1 with the UML player. Madolora stopped him cold on his in-close slapshot!

I know the game felt like a loss and everybody seems to remember the last goal UML
scored but when it came down to it, Madolora helped preserve the tie.

I too think there's something there in him, only time will tell I guess.

I think he played for Aquinas before going to juniors. I remember seeing him play against my son's team in 2008 or 2009.

Re: RIT 2010-11: What do Tigers dream of?

So, does anyone know why we don't have a banner-raising ceremony after a successful season? Is there a philosophy that that's only for national championships? Or is it just something RIT doesn't like to do at all?

I had heard that they were going to do one at blue cross, and they didn't. Then I heard they were going to do it last weekend against robert morris but that never happened either. I have no idea though.

I was thinking the same thing, when they didn't do it at blue cross, it made sense to me why they would do a "banner raising" in their own barn. I was surprised when there wasn't even mention of the banner last weekend.

Also, I can't understand why we have two banners, one saying "Frozen Four 2010" and one saying "East Regional Champions." Aren't those the same thing?

Personally I'm not a fan of doing a banner raising ceremony unless you won the national championship. By all means put the banner up for things like making the NCAA tourney / frozen four, but I feel a pregame ceremony is reserved for winning it all. That's the way Hockey East teams do it...

Nope, not the same. There are 4 regions each year and you could end up in any of them in theory. So its accurate and correct to say they won the East Region last year, they could win a west region or northeast region, etc. later on, so it makes sense to specify that aspect. And while winning a region does get you to the frozen 4, I can see why they made a unique banner for that as well.

Wait, what?

It just feels a lot like when the Colts hung up that "AFC Finalist" banner in their stadium a few years ago. I think RIT is entitled to celebrate a wonderful season. Yes, hang a banner for last year. Heck, hang two. AHA Champs and Frozen Four are both appropriate IMHO. I just don't get hanging two banners which both represent the same achievement. If we had won a national title last year, would RIT have bothered to hang an "East Regional Champions" banner? Doubt it.

I think you would hang a AHA banner but not a Frozen Four \ Championship banner unless you win it all.

Not sure about a Regional banner, has anybody done that before for college hockey?

I agree. Championship banners or nothing.

I use to laugh at Elmira that they had NCAA Appearance banners hanging. How pathetic.
