Seems to me it depends. Do "all other black guys" disagree with the statements the one black guy made?

1. There is no excuse for people to be out there burning down people's businesses, burning down police cars.

2. We have to be really careful with cops, because if it wasn't for cops we would be living in the wild, wild west in our neighborhoods.

3. We can't pick out certain incidentals (sic?) that don't go our way and act like the cops are all bad. Do you know how bad some of these neighborhoods would be if it wasn't for the cops?

4. Them j a c k a s s e s who are looting... those aren't real black people, those are scumbags. The real black people, they're not out there looting.

So citing this incident means what?

That high school kids don't need to do as they're told by authority figures within the school? That people walking down the middle of the street can ignore an officer's demand to get out of the road?


Is that your stance?


If this kid goes to the principal's office when told to, guaranteed he doesn't get taken down in the hallway.

How about this, then:

Most citizens in Ferguson are good.
Not all citizens in Ferguson are good.
Bad citizens should be held accountable.

Most cops are good.
Not all cops are good.
Bad cops should be held accountable.

But that doesn't quite pack the punch of Billow snottily lecturing everyone on race relations while emitting racist dog whistles so piercing that half the canines in the country are now deaf.

In these two instances, I'd put it at 99.9% likely that death would be avoided. The idiot high school student chose the wrong option, and against the odds, survived his police encounter.

I bet Mr. Brown would like to take the "other option" if given the chance for a redo. You know, take a chance on compliance instead of belligerence and violence.

I don't buy this. "Just do what people in a position of power tell you to do, regardless of whether it's justified or harassment" is ripe for abuse and not a reasonable way to expect people to act.

What is your suggestion for how high schools should handle discipline then? Let the kids decide when they will or will not go to the principal's office?


When people in power tell me to do something that I know is a reasonable request, I do it.

Not too long ago, there was a fire in my neighborhood and I saw it on my way home from work and being a photographer, had my cameras with me.

I parked nearby and walked to where I could shoot photos.

A cop noticed me and started yelling at me to move back to the perimeter that they had set up.

I could have argued with him. I could have shouted freedom of the press or that I pay his salary or any other BS. I live two blocks from the fire, so was in my own neighborhood.


Guess what I did? I respected his demand and did what I was told.

It was a reasonable request - just like being told to not walk down the middle of a street.

What does that have to do with the incident in question?

The rule is currently in effect and therefore needs to be followed. Unless you're saying that high school kids get to decide for themselves which rules they will follow.

Is that what you are saying?

I disagree when it's things like telling you to step into a room, to step off a street and onto a sidewalk, or produce your drivers license. A cop tells you to kill someone, or rape someone or commit a crime, then absolutely you draw the line. But I don't care if you think the cop is telling you to step into the principal's office because you are black, or pulls you over for speeding just because you are driving a corvette. You obey.

Cops are in power because we put them in power. We want them to be in power. We expect them to use the power. You think it's unjustified, or harassment. Fine, obey, but then fight the speeding ticket in court or file a harassment complaint with the school board or the state human rights department. You want to disobey, or mouth off, or tell the cop to eff off, or some other aggressive, non-compliant response, be prepared to pay the consequences.

The sagging pants wasn't the thug like behavior....good try though.

Let him sag his pants outside of school all he wants to. It's against the rules IN school, so keep them up in school.

The rule disproportionately affects one race. Basically the rule is "don't dress like a black person".

I'm sure you break rules all the time whether it's going 5+ miles over the speed limit or whatever. Would you not argue or at least be a little bit baffled if you got a ticket for it? Or is this just another case of THE RULES ARE THE RULES MUST FOLLOW THE RULES BECAUSE THEY'RE THE RULES?
