Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

let's throw the media into this toxic mix with their rush to judgement, rumors, lies and ****ed lies they delivered in the name of reporting. saying "anonymous" sources say Michael Brown was shot in the back with his hands in the air helped fuel the fire. and how about that breathless day before the verdict ... I thought Anderson Cooper was going to hyperventilate.

Race aside, was Wilson guilty or not?

I tend to doubt it. But if he wasn't a cop, he would've been indicted and gone to trial.

Actually. I may even take the last part back. Given the evidence, he might not have gone to trial in a normal (non media frenzy) case. But he would've been indicted.

Let's try this instead of looting

Indictment doesn't necessarily mean trial?

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I think it was a stupid gesture, but I think they have a right to do it (dunno league policy).

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

The quote sounds like something out of The Onion. I thought Deadspin got duped when I first read it.

The SLPOA is calling for the players involved to be disciplined and for the Rams and the NFL to deliver a very public apology. Roorda said he planned to speak to the NFL and the Rams to voice his organization's displeasure tomorrow. He also plans to reach out to other police organizations in St. Louis and around the country to enlist their input on what the appropriate response from law enforcement should be. Roorda warned, "I know that there are those that will say that these players are simply exercising their First Amendment rights. Well I've got news for people who think that way, cops have first amendment rights too, and we plan to exercise ours. I'd remind the NFL and their players that it is not the violent thugs burning down buildings that buy their advertiser's products. It's cops and the good people of St. Louis and other NFL towns that do. Somebody needs to throw a flag on this play. If it's not the NFL and the Rams, then it'll be cops and their supporters."

Literally all of that reads like a comment from a Yahoo News article.

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

One problem: the players don't have 1st Amendment rights. They are part of a private league. Again, dunno the policy of the NFL, but that will come into play. And PR, because, you know, money.

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I guess it'll depend on if the NFL wants to take another PR hit and look like it's taking away first amendment rights from its players. I don't recall the NBA doing anything when the Heat wore hoods for Trayvon Martin. Of course, they did take away first amendment rights with Sterling, but an owner saying he doesn't want black people at his games is a little different than a social protest.

There are no 1st Amendment rights when you're part of a private league, however. In "private" time, you can test that (like Sterling did), but on the field (like the Rams did) that does not apply. The Rams would (or should) have no case, no matter what one thinks.
